After touring 9 separate areas in Sri Lanka for 2 weeks and we returned for our last 2 nights in Negombo. We spent over an hour going up and down the main strip looking at different hotel and guest house rooms. The Palace Hotel, although not perfect (the carpet on the stairs needs cleaning), definatley offered the best value for money and service of them all by far! Many of the hotels and guest houses we stayed in were quite basic ranging from 2500 - 4000 rupees.
This was a great treat at the end of our trip. The room was fresh and clean with what seemed to be quite new linen and towels. The cleaning staff offered to clean our room during our stay. There were small toiletries in the bathroom and plenty of hot water in the shower. The roof top pool was a real treat and as the sea can be quite rough it was great to have the pool to swim in and cool down in the afternoon heat.
The staff were also great they really did their best to ensure we were happy and comfortable. They were very helpful and always made us feel welcome.
One last point this hotel always felt very safe. There was someone at the main enterance all day and in the evenings and it wasn't easy for a non hotel guest to just wander around. For me that was a BIG plus!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 2nd floor I think these are the better room

Me and my friend are travelling and needed a 2 ngt stay after airport. Cheap enough, air con room, double bed and mosquito net. Near bars and restaraunts etc. only 20 seconds from the beach!
Pool is on the roof, nice Grecian style surroundings. Excellent views of town and beach.
Staff extremely friendly and helpful. For money paid it was very good stay. We paid a lot more for topaz beach down the road for same Quality of room!
Recommend on a budget :)

We were tipped by a friend of us about the Palace Hotel in Negombo. And were happily surprised. It is not the top-end but excellent value for money: friendly staff, spacious room and very nice rooftop pool and bar.

Good decent B&B hotel in Negombo. Close to the Browns Beach and other shopping areas of Negombo.

Friendly staff. The rooms are decent and clean. The bathrooms and toilets are clean. There is no room-service so to say. Do be aware that if you need lunch or dinner, you have to tell them in advance.

We bought a complete tour in Colombo airport, the driver took us here the first night. We saw 3 rooms before finding one without hairs and dust evrywhere and witha mosquito net. We started unpacking and we noticed a window was broken, immediately after I found a bug big like an hand walking on the curtain. Beeing first night in sri lanka we were not sure about average level of accomodations, anyhow I called back my driver and ask him to bring me to another place immediately. We stayed another 2 weeks in sri lanka and never found such bad and dirt places.

After three weeks of traveling all around Sri Lanka, we decided to stay the last week in Negombo. After a bad experience with the way-overrated The Icebear, we looked for a better solution, and we found it in The Palace Hotel. A reasonable price and super friendly staff. Don't expect to get everything like food to be a top level, but who needs that in a place like Negombo where you have restaurants every 10 meters.
But this is more than compensated by the superfriendly staff (and espcially the smile of Devika) and the very comfortable rooms. Our five-year old son enjoyed the swimming pool on the roof.
And yes, John Cleese (with a tan) is working here during the night shifts!
Enjoy it!

I came to spend a night before my flight out of Katunayake airport. The hotel is situated right on the main street with all the other hotels and restaurants. However, my room smelled wet and it was all the way upstairs. Luckily, I was able to get a good discount. For one night I guess it is ok.
