Having visited Sri Lanka many times but always staying in the South, I decided to try Negombo but was not enamoured by some of the reviews here on trip adviser so went with an open mind.

The Paradise Beach Hotel is a pleasant clean hotel ideally located right on the beach. The first thing to hit you is the friendliness BUT ALSO efficiency of the hotel staff. All of them do go out of their way to make you feel welcome but unlike in many Sri Lankan Hotels, the staff are not constantly pestering for cigarettes or tips. Indeed I have yet to have ANY hotel employee ask for a cigarette or tell me 'how poor he/she is which is the 'norm' for Sri Lanka.

There is a very pleasant reception area overlooking the pool and gardens and (joy of joys) a lift to the three floors of rooms. The rooms are pretty standard with plenty of space, comfortable beds, useful writing table, colour satellite linked television and air conditioning (if you want it which I don't). The bathroom is adequately sized with a very good (hot water) power shower and modern toilet - don't laugh at this description - some hotels in Sri Lanka have toilets which physically move and shudder when you sit on them). Every room has a reasonable sized balcony with either a front or side view of the beach and ocean.

The dining room is quite attractive and with adequate lighting so you can actually see what you are eating. The food is very good with plenty of variety. Certainly after 11 days here so far there has been a different choice every single day. Mainly the hotel serves a hot buffet with around 4 or 5 different entrees to choose from BUT if you ever do not find anything in the buffet to suit your tastes (unlikely though that will be), speak to one of the waiters and he will have the chefs cook your choice especially for you. I am one of those strange people who holidays in Asia yet dislikes spicy food and I have yet to experience a meal when I could not find a choice to suit my palette.

There is one large swimming pool together with two children's pools (one just 35cm deep and the other just 62cm deep) with an attendant on hand all day until 7-00 each evening plus plenty of loungers, umbrellas etc.

There is also a licensed bar overlooking the pool which is open until 11-30 p.m. daily.

Outside the hotel there are a number of shops and small restaurants within easy walking distance whilst many of Negombo's busier bars and larger restaurants are about 1/2 to 1 km away (150 rupees or 75p by tuk tuk). The hotel also has a printed sign board just outside the entrance listing guide prices for tuk tuks for most of the most popular destinations so you know how much to negotiate a price with the tuk tuk driver. (An excellent idea).

All in all I would recommend this hotel for singles, couples or families.

I have stayed in many hotels around the world (from hostel to 5 star) and whilst I would rate the Paradise Beach as a good 3 star hotel, it offers VERY GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY and (unless you are one of those people expecting a 5 star hotel for 3 star prices) you will certainly enjoy staying here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the higher floors - 3rd or 2nd then you can get a better view of the ocean

Hotel with a good position garden and swimming pool but the room is very basic and don't offer any type of amenities, keep the shampoo from your house... Nice beach with many type of people, and very close to the best restaurant and pub.

We stayed at Paradise Beach Hotel for 2 night at the end of a two week trip which included a week working with a charity and a 3 day tour - which had left us pretty exhausted so landing at this hotel where we could kick back and relax was great. Apart from a short trip to the local corner shop and souvenir shop we didnt really leave the hotel grounds.

The food was great and there was lots to choose from on the menu. It was possible to order food via room service if you didn't feel like eating the the restaurant. The Pirates bar was also lovely but it was too hot and humid to sit inside the bar so we sat out by the pool and watched the sunset and the bats start to swoop. Both the serving staff at the restaurant and bar were very friendly, professional and polite.

The room was pretty basic but suited us for what we wanted at the end of our holiday.

The pool was fab. Plenty of space and a friendly attendant who was quick to get a sun lounger ready. The water was clean and was lovely to cool off as the temperature rose quite dramatically whilst we were there.

The staff at the desk were really friendly and helped us to sort out our online check-in for going home and helped us organise airport transfer.

If you're looking for a hotel near the airport to unwind for a day or two this hotel is worthwhile visiting.

Very average, 1970's style Negombo hotel. We stayed here for one night purely in order to be near the airport for an early morning flight - and it served its purpose just fine. Although the airport transfer was pretty pricey. The journey was all of 15 minutes but cost 2400 Rupees.

The room and bathroom were basic, but fine. Breakfast was very average.

Everything just felt a bit tired and in need of updating - scuffs on the walls, tatty tablecloths. Having said that, this is a perfectly decent budget choice for a night of convenience.

Negombo itself is just a nightmare of a tourist trap - not the 'real' Sri Lanka in the slightest.

One of the reasonably priced properties in Negombo. Located right on the beach. Helpful staff. Mrs Croos is very helpful and provided us one of the best rooms in the hotel. Breakfast spread is very good.

Room Tip: Try for room 301
