“Basic but Comfortable”
Reviewed 12 March 2014

This is a good value for money 3 star hotel. Everything was simple and basic but all the necessary amenities were provided. Staff were very polite and helpful. Buffet dinner was disappointing but other meal options were good. Quality of bath and beach towel was very poor. Location is very good, close to the beach and to local restaurants and not far from the airport.

Room Tip: Rooms on top floors on east side have good seaview.

The rooms need updating and the furnishings are old. It is a good place to stay after a very long flight. The staff are helpful. The breakfast buffet caters mostly for Sri Lankans. But, you can also have eggs prepared to your liking.
The rooms overlook a swimming pool and the ocean in the distance.

Room Tip: Bring your own hairdryer.

Large, central, convenient hotel, walking distance from the beach, and close enough to all the places you may choose to have a meal, or to visit. There's a large and ample menu on offer, Staff are helpful, and smiley. The pool is a huge attraction, with plenty of space for guests to spread out and be comfy. Families enjoy this hotel, there is a bar, plenty of places to just lounge around and take in the peaceful views of the beach.
They are about to refurbish and upgrade this hotel, so the owners told us they would be closing after May 2014 to begin work.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the sea, they have a lovely view.

This is the fourth time that my wife and I have taken our main holiday at the Paradise Beach Hotel and it has been another very good visit. We book the same room each year and we were pleasantly surprised this year to find that it had been totally renovated - a new bathroom, new wardrobe, new bed, new TV, new drapes, etc. etc.. Apart from the room though the main thing we like about the Paradise Beach Hotel is its staff. Most of them know my wife and I now and, right from being picked up at the airport, it is like coming home to old friends again. I'm sure we will be back there again next year.

Room Tip: I would choose a room on the top floor

We only stayed 1 night before catching a plane home. The hotel needs a bit of freshening up as others have said. The decor is dull but beds are comfortable, the rooms are large and there is space to put your things. No window or extractor fan in the bathroom which makes it very muggy. Tea/coffee and kettle in the room. The balconies in the side wing, rooms 20----22 do look over the roofs. This didn't bother us as we were only there for one night. The garden and pool are nice as is the restaurant. The beach is OK, not a patch on the beaches in the south though.
Our complaint was the access to room 222. We called it the 'joke' room to the staff who certainly knew what we meant.
Don't stay in room 222 unless you weigh no more than 8 stone and only carry a handbag!!!. The fire escape which has obviously been added since it was built comes down outside the room and there is only a 12inch gap to get to the door of the room. We had considerable trouble getting our luggage past this never mind ourselves and we're not big!!! On the 1st and 3rd floors it isn't quite so tight. The awful thing is that if there was a fire the people coming down from the 3rd floor would get stuck here as you have to go past this narrow gap to get to the rest of the fire escape. It doesn't bear thinking about!

Room Tip: Avoid the 'joke' room and any rooms in the side wing if you want a view.

We stopped over in this hotel for 1 night near the airport on our way to Yala National Park and again on our way back.

The room was very tired and not really as clean as you would expect in a hotel such as this - basically ok but dirty doorframes and surfaces. I felt it was a typical transit hotel. The only real problem was the meal. On our first night they had booked a large wedding at the hotel. This meant that the area which was normally used for hotel guests was used for the wedding and our self service buffet meal was served from a small storage room. The food was awful. Very little choice, burnt tuna steaks full of bones and chicken thighs with no meat on. The rice was nice though.

We complained and to be fair the manager apologised and offered to cook us a meal himself, but by that time we had travelled 20 hours and just wanted to go to bed.

On our return the difference was noticeable. We ate in the normal area and the food was great.

My complaint is that the hotel management made a conscious decision to give the wedding precedence over normal hotel guests to the extent that the meal was a very bad experience and spoiled the first day of our holiday. That, in my mind, was unacceptable, hence the poor rating.

As always, the staff are great. The pool was excellent. The beach looked nice and had a number of beach boys who were not too bad and left as soon as we said we were not interested in their services. The wedding closed down at 23:00 so no problems with noise.

To summarise, a good transit hotel if there is no wedding scheduled but not somewhere I would like to spend more than a few days.

Just returned. Stayed here from February 6th 2014.
All the staff are a credit to the management. Friendly, helpful and always smiling.
Lovely quiet hotel. Has good size rooms with in room WiFi, very useful. Cleaned every day. Needs a bit of updating and understand will be closed soon for a refurb.
Hotel is right on the beach and has a lovely well maintained garden and a good size pool.
Stayed half board, breakfast was good, dinner a bit limited choice but well prepared. I was there for Valentine's dinner. What a wonderful selection of food, the desserts table was amazing. Ice sculptures decorated all the buffet tables. Sculptured by hotel chef, credit to him.
The hotel is a good base for touring from. Went on a 3 day tour with Shireen tours, left out of hotel, 50yds on opposite side. Good careful driver ( Musthoq) which you need in Sri Lanka.
Looking forward to see the refurb and going back in September. Such a lot more of Sri Lanka to see.
Would definitely recommend Paradise Beach hotel.
Janice. From UK.

Room Tip: Best views on 2nd or 3rd floors.
