“Spent a lovely week at Villa Araliya”
Reviewed 10 March 2013

We spent 7 nights at Villa Araliya and had a great week there. We stayed in the Araliya apartment, based on two floors with a kitchan and lounge area.
It has a relaxed family feel and the owners love animals as there are dogs and cats lounging around the complex. We loved the animals, especially the little puppy and the turtle! Its a great bed and breakfast, you don't get the luxuries of a hotel but then this is not what this villa is about.
Its clean, close to the beach, has a lovely pool, good breakfast and a chilled out vibe.
We used it as a base to explore the area and it served us well.

The good. Beautifully designed and furnished rooms with the best features of the Geoffrey Bawa design school, such as polished concrete, tall ceilings, natural wood, outside staircases and at least one piece of classic Sri Lankan antique furniture. Each room has a safe, AC and fan. The swimming pool is great and there is a nice relaxing eating area by the bar.
The less good. Lot of rescue cats and dogs roam the compound. Some children were visibly nervous of them and there was some barking at night. The bar seemed rather amateur. One bottle of white wine stocked and the red came from a 5l flagon that had obviously been on the go for some time and delivered a good red wine vinegar. (We weren't charged for these glasses). The curry and rice set dinner (needs to be pre-ordered) were unexciting and rather mean in quantities. Luckily there are some good local cafes (try Watercress, 50m away) available.

We booked an apartment with 2 bedrooms. When we checked in we noticed that one of the AC didn’t work so we told the staff about it. Nothing happened for 23 h and the two of us that stayed in that room couldn’t sleep at all the first night. Then a mechanic came and fixed the AC. But in the middle of the night the AC broke down again so they slept 3 hours that night. Before the third night we were asked to pay the bill because they would a very busy day the next coming day. So we were kind to do that, but when we asked for a discount the trouble started… The staff said that the owner offered us a 5$ discount. We said in a calm and friendly way that a 5$ discount on a room that costs 165$ is not right. After checking again the staff said that the owner repeated the 5$ offer and then he was not reachable by phone. So then we said that we wait for him. After just one minute he came in to the small office and started to scream and point his finger at me saying we were rude, ungrateful and didn’t appreciated the service at the hotel. In a calm way I tried to talk to him, but he just went on and on about how much it had cost to repair the AC and about us being rude. We really tried to talk to him but he was unconnectable and just screamed at us. He was really hostile and mad and acted very very bad.

We paid full price.

Villa Araliya is really a nice place to stay when everything works just fine with the room and service, but when you have some problems and you have to talk to the owner… Is it worth it?!

There are more good places to stay in Negombo than this place. Our last impression of Sri Lanka is this owner. We will not come back!

Room Tip: If you like barking dogs at night book a room next to the road.

We stayed at Villa Araliya at the end of January 2013 for our first 2 nights of a 30 day round the island tour. The hotel is only about 30 minutes to the airport and we had arranged for a driver from the hotel to pick us up. We stayed in the Green Sapphire room which is spacious, comfortable and very clean with a large bed with mosi net over. A small balcony and a nice bathroom with plenty of hot water if you run it for a while. No hairdryer, toiletries or kettle.

Hotel located in a good position down a quiet lane with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Only a few minutes walk to the beach.

Nice swimming pool but concrete sunbeds with thin matresses so not very comfortable. Pool towels are provided.

Owners take in stray dogs so a few dogs wandering around but we didn't find this a problem

Breakfast was good, A fruit plate followed by eggs (any way you want) and toast and marmalade. We ate here on evening and the food was very good vegetable curries. Similar price to the restaurants.

There is a safe in the room which we used but we now believe that we had £320 in stelrling stolen from the safe here. On arrival in the room the safe was locked from the previous occupants and one of the boys came up to open it. He made quite a show of not knowing how to open it but then as if by magic it opened. We can't proove it but you will see other previous reports on Trip Advisor about theftsat this hotel. The thief was very clever in that they removed notes from different envelopes so it was only when we counted it later that we realised that the money had gone. Please be extra careful.

Room Tip: Green Sapphire is a nice room, spacious, clean and comfortable

Spent 4 days at Villa Aralya after a tour of Sri Lanka.
My room was spacious and clean.
Breakfast same every day. Vegetarian restaurant. Ate there twice: pizza one night and roti and 3 sides the other night.
My regret is : beach is not far, true. But when you get there, no comfort of course, no chair, umbrella, shade... And sun is HOT. A hotel on the beach would have been a better choice for me.
Villa Aralya is also a rescue place for animals, several dogs and cats often around your feet.
Very good idea yes but you have to be a true animal lover to appreciate it.
Help was very nice. Owners respectful of your privacy.

Room Tip: I had room near reception area which allows to catch wifi. Otherwise wifi is near reception and pool...

We spent our first two nights of our holidays here. The hotel is close to the airport, only 20 min by taxi, located in a quiet street. Rooms are spacious and clean, very nice bathroom. Staff and owner were friendly and helpful. Pool was nice. However, most sunbeds were made of concrete, not very comfortable.

This hotel was recommended by friends and we spent the last night of our trip there. Good choice in Negombo. Very clean, spacious rooms and comfy beds. The hotel's location is quite and easy to reach. No need for Tuk-Tuk to get around in Negombo. The staff is friendly. Breakfast pretty poor, though. You must love pets here, lots of dogs and cats in the hotel. All in all a good place to stay. Recommended.
