“Good for an older budget hotel”
Reviewed 14 November 2011

I pre-booked one night’s stay here for an early morning flight. I saw a few negative reviews about this hotel but I had no problems with it. It was a good budget option - its older style rooms and facilities but they were clean enough, tho not spotless. It was basic but had everything you needed including free wifi in the reception area. It was to the standard I would expect for a budget place so close to the airport. They were very efficient at confirming my bookings and responding to my other email enquiries

we have stayed here 4-5 times over the years-very convenient location close to the airport
the old boy who runs it - a real gent-they always do what they can to accommodate you even if it means shifting a few rooms about-rooms closer to the sea are the best with lovely verandah spaces-rooms are sparse but clean at around 20 -25 usd max- i am sure he ( ?walter ) could charge more given their beach front location but he is a gent as i said
restaurant is well priced with cold beers and the staff do try to be helpful- all in all always a pleasure to stop bye-i must i do prefer it out of season as it gets packed with groups
wifi is dodgy but works only in reception

Room Tip: sea view upper floor near seaside

We stayed here 3 nights in a top floor balcony room which was adequate but not exceptional (no AC). The bed and mossie net was ok, but the bathroom wasn't up to it. The cold tap in the shower needed belting to get it going, the curtain was about to collapse and the drain was blocked, leaving yucky grey water to slosh about the bathroom floor. The breakfast is mediocre with damp toast. The big mistake we made was to arrive jet lagged at the airport and have one of the tourist desks arrange a taxi for us to take us to Negombo. This crook took us to the hotel, then negotiated with the owner for the 3 nights we wanted. (One now and one two weeks later when we returned to fly out). The taxi guy said the price of the room was 3600 rupees per night. We were tired and paid him without realizing that the price of the room actually was about 2600 and the rest was his cut. It was he who paid the owner, but the owner didn't know how much we had paid the driver. We remonstrated with the owner later and he said he could do nothing about such scams because if he didn't let the taxit guys get commission, they wouldn't bring clients so he just let them do the negotiations once he had told them what he wanted for a room. The moral of this story is don't go the the desk at the airport - just go outside and get a taxi for yourself to Negombo if that's where you're going. Should cost 1200 rupees. Once at your destination, talk to the owner of the hotel yourself, don't let the taxi driver be part of the deal. Sri Lanka is packed with touts looking for the main chance, and tuk tuk drivers and taxi drivers are the worst. No body's out to give you a free lunch or even a cheap one.

Room Tip: For the extra money, the top floors aren't worth it.

We stayed here twice in Aug & Oct 2011. We stayed in one of the 2000 LKR rooms & for the price they are quite adequate. The mosquito net’s work well but the mattresses are a little uncomfortable. The bathroom is OK & the room is quite a decent size with a balcony. The hotel is located right by the beach & the sound of the waves crashing is pleasant. The owners are very accommodating arranging transport etc. We would stay at this hotel again.

Nearby airport, 10 minutes car trip. We were allowed to take rooms in the morning to sleep a bit after a night flight.

We stayed here for two nights in an AC-room (2600 rp a night). The first impression of the hotel is good. Nice scenery and building. But when you are in the rooms there is only one expression. It's not worth your money. The rooms are dirty and old. I never slept on a bed this bad. The shelves of the bed are broken and you feel them very well trough the mattress (too thin).
Beside the rooms, the breakfast was also worse. The fruit juice was disgusting and the bread was also too dry. I really don't understand why it as this good recommendation at trip advisor.

Kind regards,

Jeroen

If you are looking for a hotel on Negombo beach where you can get hammered on cheap beer, fall out of the bar and land in your hotel then Silver Sands is not for you. Its not in the 'happening location' but for everyone else the location is fine.
Rickshaw drivers in Negombo would take your last breath and then charge you for it, prices are 150rupees from the bus station and that in itself is a scandal. We had one driver want 200rupees to drive 500metres.

The hotel is clean though the rooms are very basic. Literally a bed and a mosquito net. What ruined it for us was the fact that the walls aren't whole walls and so light gets in and the room is never really dark or quiet. The door to the balcony with a huge glass pane cannot be covered and so if you sleep lightly you might struggle here.

That said Negombo is usually only a one nighter for most people and so in that respect you will be absolutely fine. Any longer and consider elsewhere.
