“Beautiful and quiet.”
Reviewed 15 November 2010

This is a lovely place for a quiet retreat from the city or a romantic getaway. The grounds are just lovely and are fun to explore. It is situated in the hills so there are mountain views all around. There is not a whole lot to do other than the tours of the grounds, but they are in mandarin, so unless you speak it or have a good translator they will probably be lost on you. There are fish ponds, the largest of which has swans and dispensers where you can buy food to feed them. When we arrived int the afternoon, we were treated to tea and a light lunch at the tea house overlooking the largest of the ponds. The layout and architecture are a treat in themselves. The food was good and very well presented.

Built in the 1980s in the Jiangnan style, the former vacation home of the late Wang Ti-wu (founder of Taiwan's United Daily News or Lianhe Bao), has been remodeled into The One Nanyuan hotel while the beautifully restored main residence is open for private tours for the hotel's guests. The hotel's grounds boast easy walks with peaceful mountain views. Unfortunately, the latter are marred by overhead electric powerlines.

My wife and I enjoyed the genteel Chinese country squire ambience which is a reflection of the hotel's admixture of traditional Chinese architecture with discreetly modern minimalist decor. The entryway comprises a path of flagstones bordered with young bamboo culms.

The hotel's staff are young and enthusiastic. The guests were primarily short-stay local tourists when we were there.

The trendy minimalist bedroom we were assigned had the usual amenities (electronic safe; kettle; free tea, coffee, bottled water; free wired internet access; large flat panel TV) and a quaint farmhouse-style window with wood shutters opening into the large ensuite bathroom which was dark-tiled except for the white ceiling. The latter had a huge family-sized circular bathtub and separate shower cubicle; the toilet was located in a well-lit nook. An overcounter washbasin perched on a spare but adequate vanity counter with mirror. Overall, the design favours short, comfortable stays.

The evening brought a cicada chorus and sporadic frog calls.

Meals were included in our package. The dining room is large and decorated per the hotel's Jiangnan theme. Service was prompt and friendly. The food was a pleasant blend of traditional regional cuisine with some modern touches; although nothing was especially outstanding to our palates, neither was any dish a disappointment.
