Hualien Sunrise Hostel

The hosts, Paul and Rachel are extremely hospitable, welcoming and patient with email enquiries. The minsu is just about 5-10 minutes walk away from Ziqiang Night market, so it's very convenient. The taroko gorge tour provided by the Paul was pretty awesome! Paul is quite chatty and really funny, hence the journey was never boring. The 'lobby' and the rooms are very nicely decorated and very clean. The decorations got me very busy with all the photo taking. The room is quite spacious and gave a very homely feeling. Would love to stay at this minsu when I visit Hualien again.

We corresponded with Rachel for the room booking of Sunrise Minsu. She has been friendly and tries to help with the questions I have emailed her, but my questions about direction to various attractions in Hualien usually ended up with a reply on taking taxi. It was only after arrival in Hualien that we realise that the intervals of the public transport in Hualien is very infrequent.

Paul, the owner of Sunrise Minsu, picked us up from the train station on the day we arrived in Hualien. He is also very friendly and once we reach Sunrise Minsu, Rachel helped us with the check-in. He gave us a briefing on the surroundings of Sunrise Minsu, and provided direction to Zhiqiang Night Market.

We had requested for Romantic Mosaic Standard Double Room, but was told that the heater was down. They had prepared Black & White Jazz Themed Standard double room instead, which we did not mind as it was only of a different theme.

Price-wise, Sunrise Minsu is great value for money! The rooms have been kept clean and room keeping was done daily. Bath towels were not provided, but face towels were. I love the cozy feeling of the room.

Location-wise, it is not near the town or any shopping district. It is also not walking distance to Hualien train station. Nonetheless, Zhiqiang Night Market is roughly 15 minutes walk away, and the closest convenience store is about 8 minutes walk away.

Service-wise, Paul and Rachel try to be as personable as possible. As Rachel knew that we had to leave on our third day at 7am, she had prepared a pack of mochi so that we will not be hungry during our journey from Hualien to Sun Moon Lake. However, their reception was empty most of the time. I would really appreciate if someone is at the reception so that we can ask travel tips.

Paul kept advising us that we should try their Taroko Gorge tour because he felt that we might not have enough time to tour Taroko Gorge if we coupled in Hehuanshan. We had to decline Paul's offer as we have booked the service of Mr Looi three months before our trip to travel from Hualien to Sun Moon Lake, visiting Taroko Gorge and Hehuanshan during our journey. Later I found out that we will need to go through Taroko Gorge, before reaching Hehuanshan, so it is more of an along the way tour. Just sidetrack a bit, we really enjoyed the service of Mr Looi, he brought us to climb mountain so that we can capture excellent photos and stopped by Cingjing eventhough it was not part of the journey agreed upon. We had really enjoyed the tour with Mr Looi.

Overall, I would say my experience with Sunrise Minsu is good. I really appreciate the pick-up from Hualien train station because minsu are not obliged to provide transfer. In addition, their rooms are well-decorated and their price is affordable. I felt that Rachel is very sweet as she added in her personal touch of providing mochi for our journey when we left.

Note: Shoe cabinet is at ground level, not outside our room. Water dispenser is being provided, and hot or cold water can be dispensed.

Room Tip: There is no lift in minsu, so try to request for rooms at lower level if you have elderly in your gr...

Rachel was friendly and patient with the questions we had. Though she missed my email for pick up, Paul came within 15 mins after I gave Rachel a call.

Overall a pleasant stay simply because the room made us feel so at home

Nicely decorated rooms! Love the orange room on the second floor! Very detailed deco. I liked the half day taroko gorge tour by the taxi driver (Lao Chen). Very patient and he brought us to have delicious chicken rice.

Rachel was a lovely lady... Very energetic and chatty =)

Excellent hosts who answered our questions tirelessly through email before we even arrived. Gave good advise where and how to get train tickets. I already felt like we were old friends before we met Rachel and Paul, the owners. Very clean room and comfortable stay. My family and I enjoyed our stay thoroughly and will definately recommend to relatives and friends. We will be back...

This has got to be the best valued Hotel/Minsu stay in Taiwan for me and wife. We arrived at the train station and were picked up by Rachel and colleague.

The location of minsu is not in tiown area but we do not mind as Rachel offers to send us there after our check in and the return Taxi cost around NT 100 (special Taxi company price arranged by BB Sunrise). Beside, the town area is quite small and you wil cover it within 3-4 hours.

The room is wonderful and the travel to Taroko and Hot spring were well arranged by Rachel and husband. We went on both tours with another couple from Singapore and enjoyed the private tour arrangement. The Taxi/car ake the 4 of us around unlike the big buses that we see at Taroko and even brings us to the very famous friend eggrolled pancake in Hualien town.

Thank you for the personal touch in all the arrangment.
