We only stayed one night as a stopover between Tapei and the Taroko National Park, but the lovely people of xxxx guesthouse made a fantastic impression on us. We came a bit early and aa the room wasn't ready yet we were given free bikes, a map, 2 bananas, 2 bottles of water and some biscuits to go out and explore the city (take the bike trail along the coast, you'll pass by a port with warehouse transformed in little art cafes).
Once we returned we checked into our well-sized double room with tv, working wifi, toiletries, more water, oranges and local specialty biscuits and ok shower.
The location is convenient if you're just making a stopover or planning to make daytripsto Taroko as it's close to the station, otherwise a bit far from town. There are quite a few places to eat around. The price was one of the best we could find in Hualien for an ensuite.
The lady running the place doesn't speak English, but has a hotline connection with her son (in law) who speaks english well. They both helped us organise a place to stay in Taroko (Tianxiang: Catholic hostel) by phone for which we are very thankful
