We understood we were staying in a budget place and that's exactly what the Chun Teng hotel is. Our room was the most basic Superior. It wasn't a bad place to hang out and the Wi-Fi worked but the room had a mustiness to it that wasn't quite so pleasant. On numerous websites, the hotel boasts of having a laundry and restaurants but, with the exception of breakfast, there appeared to be no restaurant and I was told at the hotel that the laundry was in fact a separate business around the corner. Similarly, the hot water for the shower took an eternity to heat up and when it did it barely hit my chest (not a room for the taller gentleman).
Staff did not speak anything more than passable English which was okay for us as we could engage in Chinese. However, if you needed assistance that might present a problem for you. Give them due though, they used whatever English they did know as much as possible before reverting to Chinese.
All in all, the hotel was good for the price. The location was good. The nearest metro station was a good ten minutes away which isn't bad for Kaohsiung. The area was pretty neat too close to the river and a fine Chinese vegetarian restaurant next to Outback Steakhouse.
