Some renovations to freshen it up a bit would make a huge difference as the hotel has already very many strong points. We basically picked it on the following 3 criteria: the outdoor rooftop pool (very nice -- and hot tub...), the gym and the location. The bellboys and reception staff work hard to please you, in spite of the obvious language barriers. There were two relatively minor issues when we first arrived, 1) our non-smoking room reeked of smoke, and 2) the wifi wasn´t working properly. Both issues were addressed promptly and efficiently. We loved the breakfast on the top floor with the view -- everything is laid out very nicely and you can still order items à la carte. There was a Japanese section to the breakfast with various maki rolls and smoked fish, plus all the western buffet trappings. We had our last meal in Kaohsiung at the dim sum restaurant on the 4th or 5th floor - it was fantastic and the service was friendly and welcoming.

Room Tip: We had a business suite that came with its own living room and we enjoyed having the extra space.

We had drinks on the 30th floor for a couple on nights, the place is nice, quiet and relaxing. The service is excellent there and a good selection self serviced snacks with the drinks. A good place to relax after a busy day.

Spent one quick night at this hotel (I've stayed once before, years ago), on the way to Kenting. Hotel was well known by taxi drivers. Walked in around 1AM, lobby was pretty dark and décor was more like a throwback to the 1990s. Room was comfortable with a decent view of the city.

Room size was quite large and it was a 3-bed room, surprisingly we all had plenty of room to spread out, which was very nice. Bathroom was clean, but the gray mini-tiles used gave it an aged look. Otherwise it was appointed just fine.

An interesting feature I could on the morning as I pulled back the curtains was a helpful sticker on the window-sill which said "Qiblah" and had an arrow pointing in a direction. The Qiblah is another name for a "Qabah" or "Kaabah" which is in Mecca and the direction in which Muslims pray. So if any Muslim stays in this hotel, he/she will know in which direction to pray.

We didn't really use any of the facilities since it was a short overnight stay, but at NTD 3300 for a 3 bed-room which was pretty comfortable and spacious, it was a very good value. Certainly not luxury, but clean and convenient and would most certainly stay here again.

This hotel is really great in all ways. There was a free shuttle service from the train station to the hotel. Reception was helpful in giving directions. The room was big since I lived in the suite but one thing about the room is that there should be 2 toilets instead of 2 as there is a dysfunctional room with just a tap and nothing else. Was entitled to a rest at the hotel's club lounge but since we came late the snacks they served were not really good. Like just packet biscuits and such.... Breakfast was extremely good. There were fresh fruits, great variety to choose from and Haagen Daazs ice cream.

How did I get there

I, had arrived in Taiwan, via Taoyuan Airport, took the U – Bus from the Airport to the Taiwan High Speed Rail Station of Taoyuan. From there, it was a ride to Zuoying. At Zouying, use Exit 2 to get to Kaohsiung MRT and then to Formosa Boulevard Station

The Reservation Department was kind enough to provide detail route from the Formosa Boulevard Station to the hotel. Here are the extract from Howard Plaza

“ When you exit 8 see 林森路 turn left when you see 七賢路 turn right “

The hotel name and address as given by the hotel is indicated below.

飯店名字 高雄福華飯店
地址 :高雄市新興區七賢一路145號之一

The distance from Formosa Boulevard Hotel to the hotel is 900 meters, as said by the hotel. The duration of the walk was also given as 10 minutes. As the walk is mainly along shop fronts, it must be noted that there is usually a height difference between adjacent shops and this makes the pulling of the luggage, an issue.

The hotel in general

It is a 5 – star hotel as stated in a certificate and so, it has the usual facilities, like a pool. There is a couple of storey for in - hotel shopping and also restaurants. Public telephone using cards and coins are also available in the lobby.

The breakfast is on the 5th floor and the spread is impressive as it includes Western, Taiwanese and Japanese. Of special note is the abundance of fresh fruits, ranging from ripe pineapples, watermelon, guava, etc. Of special mention is the unlimited branded ice cream. They also have the so called evening cocktail from 4 – 7 PM, on the 30th floor where you can get warm soups, cakes and a selection of biscuits and dried fruits, like plums. It is worth a visit.

The room

The room is large and I was on the 12th floor and Room 16, i.e. 1216. It faces the pool. The room, is renovated. With the exception of the floor skirting and the cabinet, below the basin, everything, looks very new.

There is a two seater in the room and also a large rack that is good for the luggage. The toilet is electrified, i.e. you get the seat warmer and also the jet cleaning, if you so desire to use them.

The bed is soft and comfortable.

House keeping is great, being efficient and so the room is clean and also the hotel, in general.

The front office service.

Check in and out is a breeze and within, a 3 minute time. I, find the concierge to be helpful and informative. The bell boy did offer to take the luggage to the room and they are also helpful in getting a taxi for the guest, as well as instructing the taxi driver.

Presence of mosquito

At the check in, I could see a few large brownish grey mosquitoes. The concierge, blamed it on the flower display. On one of the nights back from town, I actually saw the reception staff, using a battery operated gadget that shaped, like a tennis racket to swipe the mosquitoes. In fact, I, also saw a few mosquitoes entering the elevator and I also chased away one mosquito in my room.

Night markets

There are two in the vicinity of the hotel. One of them, is the Liouhe and the other that is just at one of the Formosa Boulevard Station exit.

My impression of the hotel.

A large hotel with nice and clean room. The breakfast and evening cocktail are good. The staff are responsive and polite. It is also a short walk to the so called “ Computer Street “ of the Kaohsiung train station, where you will be able to visit the Anning Fashion Street and also the Shoe Street.

Would I stay at this hotel again or recommend it to my friends – Yes.

Room Tip: The view from my room is limited as the pool blocks much of the view. Maybe you should request one t...

We reserved a family room for 4 people and it was a two room suites with big living room and spacious bedroom, two bathrooms. Very large area, clean hotel for a great price. Breakfast selection is great, convenient in Kaoshiung as well. Definitely will go back next time.

Room Tip: The four people room is super for family stay.

Our stay at this hotel was excellent! I loved everything about it. The breakfast was almost excellent although scrambled eggs were cold in a big trough. Service was superb and staff were incredibly friendly. Pool is excellent although was pretty cold. Cannot recommend the Jacuzzi which is paint-stripped and not powerful (it was in fact out of action on our second day). Room was okay and the young guy in the club lounge was very kind and helpful...

Room Tip: Take your own swimming cap as the hotel expects you to wear one (they have their own but am not keen...
