“Very spacious and grand”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

It was a last-minute decision to extend our stay in Taichung and we managed to grab a last-minute booking via agoda for a room in Mulan, for a reasonably good price. Our family had three adults and a child. We wanted a motel with a large pool in-room, and Mulan had met the requirement. We loved the pool and spacious bathroom. The massage chair is great after a long day's drive. From our past experience, we knew that as of most Taiwan motel's standard policies, even after they charge an additional pax, they do not provide the additional bed. All they do is to lay a mattress on the carpetted floor for the additional pax. However, we don't find this much of an issue with the room in Mulan, as they have large and comfortable sofa and a spacious loft. We enjoyed our stay.

I was in Taichung for business and decided to extend my stay for a weekend with my wife. The colleagues recommended this as a "romantic" place. To me, however its whole concept was shockingly creepy. The check-in was at the security gate, without even getting out of car, then you are driven to what is essentially a parking garage and the room is directly above. So I got out of the taxi, lugged my whole baggage over the stairs to discover a huuuuuge room. It must be at least a thousand square feet with a humongous TV and a luxury sofa to watch it from, a massage chair, a lot of furniture, many colours all over from the carpets to wall and celinng, many, many decorative things hanging from the ceiling, the big bed in a big alcove with a chequered design on walls around it and small LEDs wherever the lines crisscrossed. A lot many dark colours in the interior. And then there was the bathroom. Its"door" was about 20 feet wide and the bathroom was big enough to grow vvegetables and grains to feed a small family. There was a rain shower, a lot of decorative plants inside, a jacuzzi area and so on. Children could play hopscotch in that bathroom, and there would still be spare place for a pingpong table and more. It was black granite everywhere. Sounds great, right? The hitch there was the commode was locates in a corner in a very cramped recess. I couldn't figure why. There was enough space here to build a group shower for twenty people and the toilet would not accommodate a reasonably fat person! And the creepy part was, not a window anywhere. The outside world cannot see you and you cannot see the outside world. Gave me goosebumps of claustrophobic horror in the middle of so much space. I like the idea of a totally private space to spend time with my lady love, but this was a bit too much. There is a difference between being private and hiding. If i have to have a tryst so clandestine, i would prefer to give it a pass. Not my cup of tea. It was then that i spotted a selection of condoms on the bedside table and decided to get out.

To be fair, there must be some people who will find this place very enjoyable. In my case, i found the staff there extremely understanding. They not only refunded my full money ( you have to pay up-front at check-in), but also guided my taxi driver to a nearby good business hotel where I had a great time.

Room Tip: I believe all rooms have no windows here so be sure you are not looking for a "sala con vista&q...

We booked the Water dance theme and checked-in at 6pm. As it is a car motel, they do not have a lobby. Patrons just drive through to register and drive straight to the garage that is located below your room. We did not drive and we were early, so they stored our baggage until we come back at 6pm. The room was spacious and grand. Comes with a huge TV, huge bathroom and a jacuzzi of a good size. Toiletries are well-replenished and everything is provided. There is no kettle but a water system that you can get hot and cold water from. As it is a fairly new motel, less than a year, so some cab drivers might not be able to find it. We took a cab to Fengjia night market and it cost about 170 TWD. We opted for breakfast to be served to the room and it was a tasty chicken burger with packet juice and a portion of fruits. Pillow were a bit soft though.

We stayed in the Butterfly Dance Suite (the smallest) for 2 nights, and was blown away by the size of the room and the decor. It was huge by normal hotel size, about 500 square feet. The shower area is as big as the main room itself. It is furbished with a 50" TV, a king sized bed and mini-bar and complimentary tidbits and drinks. Shower area has a TV screen at the side and a big jacuzzi pool that can comfortably fit 2 persons, complete with a rain shower. The room was comfortable and the big space is much appreciated, a breakaway from the usual small hotel rooms. Service was prompt and friendly, and we can have the choice of having breakfast at the inhouse cafe or delivered to our suite.

Because it is a motel that caters to mostly locals coming for a short couple of hours of rest, the room rates are heavily discounted the later you check-in. Check-in after 3pm is 40% off normal room rates and check-in after 6pm is 50% off. Check-out time is normal at 12noon and if you intend to stay for more than 1 night you can either choose to check-out and then check-in at 6pm or choose to pay 10% of original room price to skip the trouble of in and out. Each suite comes with its own parking garage, which explains the privacy and popularity with locals, that leads straight up to your suite.

There is a restaurant that sells roasted goose that is famous about 3mins walk away. Overall was very happy with the room and was value for money.

Room Tip: By normal standards the Butterfly Dance suite is good enough, but if you are in a mood to splurge, y...
