Horrible Hostel!!!!”

I thought I got a good deal with “輪傻蜜思Story Hostel” in feng Jia – Tai Chung by looking on the website that I have checked through the internet for about 3 months (picture very nice with clean environment and white beds sheets)

But, once we reached Taichung HSR Station the owner bring us to “feng Jia University’s hostel/dorm, that made us shocked!!! Then we climbed up to 5th floor, the hostel’s living environment was very very dirty, creepy and scary.

Then the owner told us he very good by giving us 2 double bed rooms that made me very angry. (Originally we booked family room which is 2 double beds in the room)

He should tell us that he does not have the room that we requested at first, we can find other hostel/hotel before to Taichung.

This kind of way doing business is like putting tourist / customer head on the chopping board.

My family did not like it at all, and requested the owner change the rooms and we pay the differences, according to the owner, rooms were fully booked cannot change.

The worst part of the whole stay was bitten by the bed bugs, I am so so sorry and heart pain that my husband and kids have to suffer, they scratch their legs and arms until bleeding;
I felt guilt and sorry for such experience that my family faced to.

This Taiwan trip really made me furious!!!

Though relatively cheaper, the "manager" is using student's dorm for tourist. The address given is not where the rooms are. And there's actually no "Story Hostel" around. The address is for the "manager" to pick up unlucky tenants like myself (he actually observes before he pick up because he knows someone would have reported him and catch him red-handed). He claims to offer "free" room if you take up his "tour service" using his small untidy van. He doesn't give receipt for your payment as well. Please do not fall into his trap. Laterooms.com should stop advertising for him. Hope no more people fall into this prank. He will also make you climb upto 5 storeys without lift! By the way, his english sucks! We are chinese yet he keeps speaking poor english to us..

It was the only budget place to stay during our 5 days in Taichung during the New Year countdown. Many people might be tempted to book this hostel because of the cheap price but I would rather pay a higher price and stay in a hotel than go through this terrible hostel experience. I usually check reviews of hostels before booking but before January 2014, there wasn't so many negative reviews. Glad to see that there are now many more accurate bad reviews of this place.I never wrote a review for a hostel/hotel before but this experience was so bad that I had to write one so as inform other travelers of what to expect.

At first we were told by the owner Mike (but he pronounces it as Michael) that the Family Room we booked could not be given to us as there was a water supply problem so he arranged for us to stay in two private rooms. We were a;ready very disappointed when we saw the place as the whole hostel living environment was very dirty and old.
Problems with these so-called private rooms:
1) Room was freezing cold during the winter
2) One room did not even have a sink
3) Very noisy environment- Partly due to the night market and partly due to other long-term tenants
4) Security was lacking- There is no security guard in the afternoon and there was even a sign warning about an intruder in the building
5) No wifi access in our rooms due to some location reason (contradicts what is written on booking websites)

As such, we requested to change rooms and to our disbelief he actually had a Family Room at another location which he brought us there very unwillingly. After changing our rooms for us, he complained about how we caused him to lose a customer and asked us how we wanted to settle his loss. As it was the first day of our trip and we didn't want any more trouble from him we just decided to pay half of the money for a one-day stay.
Problem with the Family Room:
1) The room was still cold but much better than the first
2) The location of the hostel was quite inaccessible but at least had a better and safer living environment
3) The Family Room uses a shared bathroom (did not clearly state on websites that Family Rooms use shared bathrooms but we didn't confirm either so just to take note) and the heater is quite cranky going from burning hot to freezing cold in seconds
4) Biggest problem is that you need the owner to open the door for you every time you come back
Frankly, I was just thankful that we could move to this hostel instead that my standards for it was not that high in the first place.

But ultimately, the worst part of the whole stay would be having to face the owner Mike. He kept promoting his tours to us which we flatly rejected as we were on a budget. Thus, he wasn't even willing to share with us little details about the area like where is good to eat in Feng Jia Market and the places we can go in Tai Chung. I did not know why he didn't want to let us stay in an available family room but he pushed the blame to us for changing rooms when he himself told us that there was a water supply problem which needed time to be fixed. He also did not tell us that we always had to ask to open the door when we wanted to get inside the second hostel. I do know that hostel owners try to paint a nicer picture of their place so as to attract more people to stay but the photos he provided on booking websites and facebook page are very misleading and we were kind of tricked into taking happy picture of our stay on the first day which he posted online. It is a pity that I didn't take any pictures of the hostels I stayed in to post here as I did not want to take ugly photos of my trip. I definitely did not like the owner's very profit-minded attitude who wasn't any bit concerned about us when we did not book his tour.

Final advice if you really want to book this place cause of the cheap price is to stay there for one night only just as a place to sleep.

To clarify things, this is not a hostel at all (no reception, no common area, no hostel community). It's mainly random rooms located in different blocks near a university (basically student apartments out for rent). The room was old and dusty, smelled strongly of smoke and had no heating. There was no proper shower as the owner just connected a shower head to the tap at the basin. He even said we can't have the power switched on for too long as it will trip, which made us very anxious.

The owner deceived us a couple of times telling us that public transport is not easily available around the area to tempt us to join his tour package. We didn't end up joining and we actually found out that buses and taxis are easily available a few minutes walk from the place.

He also brought us to a touristy biscuit shop saying it's his (we doubt it) even when we already express that we weren't interested. He kept emphasizing that we could just try without buying and that the things are cheap and good there. He also said that we'll get free shipping back to Taipei. However, he failed to mentioned that we have to buy NTD3000 worth of biscuits for free shipping -_-'' In the end, we did buy a few biscuits though as the taste was not bad. We left our biscuits at the shop as we were going off to sight-see straightaway, and the owner said he would help us bring the biscuits to our rooms, but he never did. We had to go and get them ourselves the next day in the end.

The room was paid via Paypal prior to arrival, however when we arrived, the owner gave us back the money and held my passport which I find to be very unreasonable. As we had to check-out very early to catch the train back to Taipei, I requested to have my passport returned to me the night before. The owner was reluctant and gave the excuse that he had other guests to entertained, the same reason which he gave for not bringing our biscuits from the shop. We settled to meet at 7.30am the next morning, but he came at 7.00am to rush us to check-out.

Overall, it was a terrible stay. We felt that the owner was like a conned artist who lied to us the whole time. We were so anxious staying at the place that one of my friend couldn't sleep properly for the 3 nights we were there. The worst accommodation experience I've ever had anywhere!

We stayed here one night because it was cheaper than the other choices, but it was reeeeeally a terrible decision.

Michael, the host, picked us up as he said he could in his email but neglected to mention that he was going to be charging for it if we elected not to purchase his tour services. He asked about the baseball game that we were seeing in Taichung and discouraged us from getting a taxi to the stadium, suggesting that we hire him instead. (We took a taxi back, and it seemed almost a shorter ride, though it cost nearly the same.) He also tried to push his trips and services on us. He did not take our money when we arrived at the hostel around 4 pm, saying that he wanted us to consider hiring him to drive to Sun Moon Lake, which was going to be over 900 NT per person. He ended up coming back to knock on our door at midnight to collect the cash, which seemed quite rude. Also, someone next door was not there to pay around midnight, so Michael came back the next morning at 8 am and woke us up thumping on the door next door.

The actual apartment itself was terrible. The overhead lights had trouble turning on each time. When flushed, the toilet made a long echoing noise that kept us up at night. There was a small sliding door to a tiny balcony, but the doors didn't fit correctly for the lock to line up, so it was non-lockable. There was a mini-fridge but there was some trash (plastic straws and napkins) that had not been cleared out. Our bedspread smelled clean, but there was a visible stain on the fitted sheet. What's more, the apartment was simply a room with bathroom attached, in a small hallway with a few other similar rooms. There was no communal room or other amenities, no way to get hot water. It's not a real hostel, and without signs to help direct us back to this apartment, on the fifth floor of a larger complex, we almost got lost. Just don't do it! Pay more for a real hostel!

There is no basin in the bathroom. Heater did not function well, too cold in the winter. The room is very dusty. The owner does not give us a good service. It's too near to the night market, very noisy. It is not worth for the rental we paid.
