If you are looking for a peaceful environment, this is it. Although there isn't much to do but it is worth the beauty of mountains surrounding the dam..just serene during sunset..

Our friends took us to the Shimen Resevoir some 30 minutes away from Taoyuan downtown for some birdwatching. There is a NT50 entrance fee and we stopped by the 3 storey observation deck near the parking area. We saw the endemic Taiwan whistling thrush, Taiwan scimitar babbler, some Japanese white eyes, light vented bulbuls and an Oriental Turtle dove. We also came upon a crested goshawk perched on one of the trees nearby. Later we drove across the dam for some sightseeing and we entered the museum where they had pictures of the birds normally observed in the area. The reservoir is recommended for 2-3 hours of birdwatching, and even if you're not a birdwatcher, it's still good for hiking and exercise. Overall, it's a clean facility with good roads and shady lanes.

The travelling time from Chongli downtown to the Shimen reservoir was almost 45-50 minutes. On a sunny day in December we decided to walk up the observation deck of the reservoir - a scenic walk, images of hills and their reflection in the water just like the Chinese painting. If there is plenty of time, go for a cruise which took around 45 minutes, or a meal at one of the restaurants nearby which highlighted the fishes caught on the spot. The tourist centre was not even manned by any receptionist. Other than these, this sightseeing spot has nothing more to offer. Maybe good for locals e.g. hiking, but for tourists there's little selling point.
