“Rustic elegance”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2012

We had the pleasure of returning to Rivertrees again recently - our favourite place whenever we’re in the Arusha area. We love the tranquility and the feeling of being away from it all... This time we had a sneak peek at the new River Cottages – delightful! They're situated right on the river, which trickles by peacefully along the back verandahs. And the creative, rustic elegance of the furnishings and decor are superbly done: spa-like bathrooms...tiny adjustable reading lamps on the headboard with switches and everything INSIDE the mosquito net....a choice of soft or firm pillows...well, you get the idea. A lot of thought has obviously gone into the new accommodations - the big and little details that elevate your experience from just good to simply exceptional. Wireless high speed internet enabled me to get some work done too. And of course the staff - as always - were very friendly and helpful, the wine was excellent, and the chicken, spinach and brie pizza was top notch!
Keep it up Rivertrees, we look forward to seeing you again!

This is a stunningly beautiful facility that makes you feel like stepped onto the movie set of "Out of Africa." The buildings, furnishings, and grounds are very lovely and relaxing. There were three of us staying in a great cottage, however, the bathroom facilities sat behind a partially enclosed stucco wall which lacked privacy and took some negotiation between members of our party in terms of accessing the sink, toilet and shower. The hot water was also on the lukewarm side. The cottage that my sister and her husband stayed in had a more traditional bathroom set-up with the facilities located behind a full floor to ceiling wall with a door.

We enjoyed a wonderful lunch, including pizza cooked in an outdoor oven. The breakfast omelets were out of this world. I selected a vegetable pasta for dinner over the lamb--it was fine, but not excellent. Serving sizes are way too big and the wait staff made you feel a little bad for not finishing a dish.

I loved the grounds, walking around the vegetable garden, and the wonderful mainroom and library.

We spent our first full day in Africa at Rivertrees-it was a lovely place to relax for one day before we started our safari. The accommodations were outstanding-even a bathtub, which is rare in Africa but meant a lot to me. Some of our group went an a canoe trip which they thoroughly enjoyed, others had massages and I just relaxed after the long plane trip from the USA. The food and service were outstanding and I can highly recommend Rivertrees as a jumping-off point for your safari. Some of our group went on a guided canoe trip, which they very much enjoyed. Others had a massage and I just relaxed after the long plane trip to Africa from the USA and read in a chaise lounge next to a river-where you could see some willdlife.

We had a wonderful stay (two nights) at Rivertrees in perhaps the original building
when they started as a guest house. They have nice grounds and many trees with
bright reddish-orange flowers. We were told that it was originally part of a coffee
plantation. Location is relatively close to both Arusha and Kilimanjaro airport --
perhaps a half-hour drive. The staff was always helpful -- from Hannah who
checked us in, Christine who answered email and the manager David (hope I have
his name right). Meals are quite good, especially breakfast, and you have a choice
between eating inside or outside by an open fire in the evening. They do have an
excellent pizza oven. Wi-fi exists but limited with best service, either in the restaurant
or just sitting outside the office. There are some rustic features but we found them to
be part of the charm of the lodge. Interesting short day trips include visiting a nearby
village, going for a hike in nearby Arusha National Park, and going into Arusha town
to visit the market or to see the Cultural Heritage Center (note that besides tanzanite
and typical souvenirs, they have antique African artifacts for sale). For first coming
into Tanzania from abroad, this is an excellent choice for a two night stay.

We were impressed and very pleased with the spacious and well manicured grounds. The buildings were widely separated and we stayed in the River Cottage where the soft flow of the water made the setting very serene and enjoyable. Our bed was very comfortable, the bathroom provide both a tub and a shower and the room was spacious. The porch facing the river was a real delight. There was no problem charging our camera batteries in our room, any time day or night. This is a wonderful place to stay but we were not impressed with the food. Since we stayed here for two nights (one night each before and after our safari) we had several opportunities to try the food. Although we did have a good salad for lunch and the pizza from the outdoor oven was good, the main course dinners we had each night were not up to our expectations. A steak was tough and over cooked and the service was quite slow.

We highly recommend staying in the rooms here. Wifi is available - although we did not have Wifi reception in our room so we went to the lodge to get reception. This was not a problem for us.

The grounds provided attraction to a range of birds for us to see and this was a real plus us.

This hotel has an amazing setting with a rushing river, beautifully landscaped grounds, and lush vegetation. We were the first to stay in the snail room, which was very quaint. The supremely comfortable twin beds in the room had elegant and sturdy mosquito nets. The bathroom is stunning with a tub and vanity of poured concrete and a wet room shower. Bottled water, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, and lotion are provided. Dinner was adequate, breakfast excellent. The only glitch was easily taken care of. The power went out because a fuse was blown, but I thought it was normal and went to sleep thinking it would be back on in the morning, but it wasn’t. When I went to the desk, it was fixed immediately. In all, this was a great place to spend our first night in Tanzania.

We stayed only 1 night after our booked room at Arumara lodge had been booked for the 30th August instead of July by our agent and they had no room so this was a last minute booking. Nice lodge with lovely grounds. Rooms rustic but everything worked. Good dinner at a reasonable price but breakfast box given next day was poor, boiled egg, jam sandwich, juice water and a banana.
