“Lovely Lunch”
Reviewed 23 January 2014

I had read about this place during my research and knew I wanted to go. Our tour operator arranged lunch for us at the lovely River House which was wonderful. After a long journey on the bus from Nairobi that morning it was so nice to sit in the thatched restaurant looking out at the lush gardens and watching the monkeys play. The food was fresh and delicious and service very attentive. Afterwards we did some shopping and watched some of the craftspeople weaving, blowing glass and sewing. This is a real feel good destination and I recommend it highly.

We visited River House on our recent visit to Arusha. I had read previous reviews on Trip Advisor and we weren't disappointed. We used a taxi to get there. We noticed immediately how beautiful the grounds were. We first did the tour of Shanga; and then relaxed on the sofa couches under the shady large trees and drank champagne. We noticed some monkeys playing in the trees. The staff then escorted us to the outdoor restaurant. The chandliers were made out of the handblown glass by the disabled employees at Shanga. We started off with bread and carrot ginger soup. We then got an appetizer of a stuffed pastrey with a yummy sauce. Next we went to a salad bar of a variety of pasta, vegetable and lettuce salads. The dressing with the lettuce was the best we have ever had! We then were escorted to a bbq grill where a chef served you chicken, tenderloin, fish and vegetable potato ball. The meats and fish were marinated which made everything very delicious. The staff encouraged you to have seconds and even thirds. The last course was a variety of chocolate toffee, chocolate covered coffee beans, fruits and almonds served in the hand blown glass and wood trays from Shanga. Tea and coffee were served last. We skipped the coffee planatation tour but I heard it was good. Between the meal, Shanga tour and gift shop, we spent almost four wonderful hours there.

“Top notch hideaway for lunch”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

Tucked amidst beautiful gardens and lawns, when you step into River House coming off of the dusty main road you are transported to another world. Seated immediately on soft couches tucked under a large shady banyan tree, we were greeted with a welcome sparkling wine and warm towels. Once the table was ready, we were walked round to the large and beautifully decorated pavilion and seated at a large carved mahogany table.

The food was a combination of Tanzanian and European inspired, with the appetizer and selection of mini desserts presented stylishly. The main course was a selection of BBQ meats and fish with various sides, all of which were delicious.

“A Must See”
Reviewed 5 October 2013

As part of our OAT safari, we spent the better part of the day visiting the Shanga River House, a cooperative where physically challenged Tanzanians are trained to creat tradiional jewelry and crafts from local fabrics and recycled materials. Here, we joined a cooking demonstration by a talented and very funny chef. We then had lunch of traditional Tanzanian specialties. We took a trip throught the coffee plantation and learned about coffee growing here at the River House. They have a great gift shop where you can purchase gifts made there and also the coffee which is delicious.
