“Wonderful Experience, Good Price”
Review of Hartebeest Safaris

Hartebeest Safaris
Reviewed 1 December 2013

We decided to organize our Safari in Tanzania with Hertebeest following some friends’ suggestion. Before taking the final decision, we checked some other safari tour operators, both local and European, but they were all more expensive (even one third more). The plan that Hartebeest proposed seemed to be good and well-balanced, so we got for it.
The organization of the tour was very good. We did a six tour safari, visiting 4 parks (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro), all extremely beautiful. The game drives basically lasted the whole day, from 8.30/9.00 until 5.00/6.00 in the evening. We saw many different scenarios and types of flora.
In addition: we had a 6-seats pick up and related driver at our complete disposal. So we could basically stop any time we wanted. Great safari and great experience too.
We stayed in Wildlife Loadges in all parks. They are all more or less equal in terms of building facilities and structure, but the level of service, the food, the dimension of rooms and the building’s general conditions varied a lot from one to the other. The best one is the one in Lake Manyara, the second the one in Lobo. The ones in Ngorongoro and Seronera were a little bit below expectations. Still, overall, considering the price we paid, against what advertised from the Lodges, we believe it was fair. Also, we had the impression that there were not many other very good opportunities at the same price.
Both Lazarus and our driver Modest were extremely nice and friendly and tried to make our experience as good as possible. Lazarus was also at our disposal to organize accommodation in other towns and to help us with transportation
We are overall very satisfied of the tour, what we saw and how we were treated.

We went to Tanzania in August, just a few days before the departure we booked a group safari with a company in Arusha which seemed to be the best value for money, Hartebeest safari. we sent an advance with Western Union and then we met Lazarus in Arusha.

we were told that we will join other 2-3 people max, with a detailed programme of the safaris.

The thing is that agencies group people with different programmes, so in the end actually the original programme was changed to accommodate other people programmes. Of course everyone was told that they would perfectly follow the given programme.

so, for example while we had a full day in Ngorongoro (max 6 hours in the crater, ok) another person in the group had a flight at 5pm from Kilimanjaro airport in the same day, and we found out only the night before when we were already in the camping.

so we had to rush to be off the gate to drop the person for the flight and we spent only half of the time in the park we were supposed to. every day we had something like that, leaving hours later and coming back earlier than planned. One person had a sunrise safari in a park, so we had to wait for her to come back to start our programme (3 hours lost waiting!) the day after she had a balloon safaris in the Serengeti, and we had to change our plans with a stay of 3 hours in the camping doing nothing....

so, if you join a group safari, make sure that the other people will have the same programme you have. For sure the safari agency will tell you everything will be fine!

Having said that, it is true that you save money by joining a group, and you can perfectly find a safari directly in Arusha during high season for the most visited parks.
We also had two days extension to Natron Lake, just the two of us. Even if we were only two, we left three hours later than planned for unexplained reasons, and the day after we left very early to go back. every day we had to discuss with the driver why he was chaning the timing of the safaris, in the end we missed out many hours inside the parks, of course after having paid park fees for 24 hours.

the other guys in the group had booked with different companies and we all ended up together.

In conclusion, to be honest I would not recommend Hartebeest safaris, but I doubt that all these companies at budget level for group safari would do the same.

luckily the parks are so beautiful that you kind of forget the hassle!

Our friends who live in Kenya arranged our holiday in kenya and Tansania for 11 days.He organized a van for us to Nakuru and masai mara for 4 Days then dropped us at Hisbanya on the 5th day.Our driver Mutua was a great man but the van broke down 2 times on the second day to Mara and the day to hisbanya where we couldn't reach at the board in time.

Our Tansania guide John from Hartebeest safaris arrived in time with a very comfortable toyota landcruser and he waited us for 4 hours at the board. We couldn't cross the serengueti park because it was late and we slept at stopover local hotel.
We visited Serengueti,Ngorongoro and maniyara then to Arusha where we met the man at hartebeest safaris office. We enjoyed our Tansania safaris very much.John explained to us each and everything from the begging to the end.He showed us many things.Lodges were great but only small packet lunch. The road was horrible but we were lack to get a more comfortable car.Ngorongoro is great and we saw masai people.
Thanks Hartebeest safaris for the great and enjoyable holiday. We will return back to Tansania with my workment. Thanks for the bus to nairobi dropped us at Airport in time. Please avoid to travel with van which are not strong for the road.

Prima in Italiano:

2 weeks holiday in Tanzania, fully planned by us, two couples of friends, choosing a travel agency in Arusha "Hartebeest Safaris". We looked in the internet and selected among many local agencies the cheapest one, aware of the possible risks.

During the first week we climbed up the Kilimanjaro along Machame Route, it took 5 days up (1 more than usual to acclimatize better) and 1 and half down; beautiful landscapes, very good agency guides and team of 12 porters; accomodation in tents, camping along the route.

During the second week we had Nothern Parks Safari (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater), with very helpful guide and cook; very beautiful and full experience; accomodation mostly in tents plus one night at Ngorongoro Lodge on the crater's edge; the trip included also visiting Mto Wa Mbu Village, Masai Boma and Hadzabe tribe.

We are very satisfied: all we asked for was done, we didn't have any hitch in transfers or parks entrances; our guides, both Kilimanjaro's and Safari's, were very competent. Obviously, it was a "saving money" kind of trip, providing mostly tents accomodation, just one night in lodge (we asked for it) and two nights in a hotel in Arusha; about this last hotel, "Blue Comfort Inn" we'd have something to say: the word "comfort" is not really coming to our minds thinking about that place, we advice to ask for a better accomodation (even if this one is very close to Hartebeest Safaris Agency). Apart this, Lazarus, the agency's owner, was always helpful and interested in everything going well.

There are thousands of options in Arusha for safaris and game drives. Take this advise, do not waste your time contacting this company "Hartebeest" once its owner Lazarus is a perfect example of how a dishonest person can get advantage on tourists and also how your experience can turn out to be a nightmare.
