The real Africa. The poverty is confronting but the noise and smells and atmosphere are not to be missed. Go to the local markets.

We did a one day tour to a close Massai Boma nearby Arusha with Raymond - our nice guide from the Tanzania Tourist Board in Arusha. It was a great experience, because we really had the possibility to get in touch and talk to massai people and experience their way of life. We also had the chance to see a big massai market, which takes place every sunday, which was amazing to see. Additionally to the great impressisions, which we got on our tour, the people in the massai village benefit from the tour fee, which is a good side effect.

Who seeks for the real touch with the Massai culture should definitely do one of the strips offered by the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB).

The village tour was like visiting another world. Houses, warm hospitality of the villagers, scenery and their way of life. The banana plantations, children playing outside, some are carrying bananas to the market, cooking outside of the modest homes in contrast to new and very modern stone houses of the wealthier families. We "helped" cooking bananas to prepare the local banana beer (did not like the beer at all) and visited the local school - 55 puples in each class, very crouded yet silent and respectful during lessons.
