Lush Garden Hotel
Ranked #64 of 125 Arusha B&B and Inns
Reviewed 21 May 2012

I think accommodation in Arusha is overpriced, so for me, the Lush Garden Hotel was good value for money. The room we had was quite big, very comfortable beds (not hard like the New Safari Hotel). The wireless internet was much faster than I usually get in Tanzania and we were able to get a room without booking.

Yes, the shower does take quite a while to warm up and doesn't last long, but if you know this in advance it can be worked around.

Our lunch did take over an hour to be cooked, and it was ok, but there are so many restaurants nearby, that I would suggest you take a short taxi ride to get something better. My favourite restaurant is Vama (an Indian restaurant which is only a few minutes by taxi).

The lady on the front desk was very welcoming, however the breakfast staff were not particularly interested, but for me the comfy bed far outweighs the staff issues. I generally have a low expectation of service in Tanzania and then I am not disappointed.

We were told not to walk down to the shop on the main road (in daylight), however I have walked along that road numerous times and not had any problems, although I do not carry valuables when I am walking in this area. It is easy to get the staff to call a taxi.

Overall, if you are only staying 1 night, it is substantially cheaper than the major hotels and so I would recommend it.

We stayed here for one night. At the start, we're very happy to get in at 330 am, without reservation. Our plane was delayed and we never thought that we would arrive that late in town. It is a bit difficult to find a reasonable room for a reasonable price in Arusha. The price is reasonable, the rooms are certainly ok. Good quality matress (very important, but difficult to find sometimes), aircon, tv and clean bathroom. We had an excellent sleep. Breakfast and service was poor.
When we arrived in the breakfast room, the staff did not greet us, not because they were not there, but they were watching a movie. A number of staff were just hanging, talking with each other or talking on their phone and it was difficult to get their attention. Breakfast was poor, the water in the flask for the tea was not very hot, not much choice, an egg ws possible, not offered though, but after asking, they will cook one.
Their receptionist was not very interested in her customers.
It's a pity, because the staff could do so much more to give us a good experience. Although, the
room is good, we won't come back. But if you only need a good bed, take all meals out, you don't mind clueless staff (or maybe you just should laugh, because it can be funny), this can be a place to stay.

3 stars may be generous for this place, however the rooms were lovely and clean. Unfortunately there were too many other negatives. The on-demand hot water heater took at least half an hour to heat, then only provided enough hot water for one shower. After coming from 8 days on Kili without a shower, not enough! One of the rooms we were assigned did not have air conditioning so they put a fan in the room but did not offer another room. In my room the bathroom window was left open to flying insects and there was no way to close it, so we closed the door to the bathroom to keep the bugs out and the a/c in.

The restaurant here is really a negative. The breakfast buffet was ever present, but if you want eggs, there is nobody to offer to cook them for you. They will do it if you can find someone and ask. One night we decided to have dinner at the restaurant rather than go out, to save time. 3 hours later we were finally back in our rooms.

Service was lacking. When asked what we needed to know about the room, they turn the television on loudly. There is no instruction to turn on the switch for the hot water heater or air conditioning. The people at the front desk prefer to continue their phone conversations (on cell phones) rather than address the person standing in front of them.

When unloading your luggage, they make sure that someone takes it out of the vehicle, standing around for a handout, then someone else takes it up to your room and also waits for a tip. This seems to be common practice in this area and some other less developed countries I've visited, and not just this property.

On the (kind of) plus side, we needed our laundry washed quickly as we were leaving for a safari the next morning. This was accomplished (for a significant fee), but our clothes were still damp as they were hung outside overnight to dry.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with working air conditioning and hot water

First, this hotel engages in a bit of false advertising on their websites, with photos of ... who knows WHAT hotel intermingled with real photos of the Lush Garden Hotel property. Still, the hotel building is pleasant, the grounds are well-kept, the common areas are clean and pleasant and the rooms are very fashionably decorated. Most of the other patrons were business people, well-dressed, polite, quiet and professional.

The property resides off a terrible, semi-paved road that is difficult for taxi sedans to negotiate. But worst of all is the problem with hot water in the rooms. Each room is serviced by a tiny little water heater that yields, on average, 5 minutes of hot water for bathing. This is not nearly enough time for two people to take anything more relaxing than an "army shower." After a week on Kilimanjaro, all I wanted was a nice, hot, relaxing shower - to get good and clean, wash my hair, etc. My plan worked for 5 minutes before the water turned ice-cold, leaving me in a pretty surly mood.

All three rooms in our party experienced this identical problem over the course of two different stays in this hotel. The hotel staff either a) pretends that they are "fixing" the issue by hitting a few buttons / twisting a few knobs on water heater, telling you "all fixed!" or b) treats the guest with contempt for daring to trouble them with this request.

Clearly, this hot water problem is a "known issue" that the hotel management chooses not to address. It's a shame that an otherwise pleasant hotel experience is ruined by a cold shower! Until this issue is resolved, I strongly recommend staying elsewhere.
