“A good night”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

I used the banqueting room here for an event. The manager met us and after sketching he outlines of the night; menu etc, handed us over to that sections manager who handled the whole thing well. We were very particular as to the snaked during the evening and altered quite a few of their suggestions to suit our guests; some vegetarian, some glutton free, no beef or pork – and that was all done well. The functions room opened out on to a veranda overlooking the garden which was great for breaks from the music and crowd we had inside. The hotel looks good for people coming in to a do – not sure what the style is but it must date back to when the hotel was built, white exterior and lots of natural wood. I was impressed and would use them again as although it sounds clichéd; they helped make the night one to remember

Dear Chris G,
Thank you very much for sharing your impressions about The Arusha Hotel on tripadvisor !
I am glad you enjoyed your time with us !
Our Conference and Banqueting team is indeed dedicated to make of every event a success and it is a pleasure to read that you are satisfied with yours.
The Arusha Hotel being the oldest hotels in town (since 1894), I would qualify its style as Colonial with, as you mentioned, the presence of wood in the Lobby and the outlets ...
The Arusha Hotel has been through various refurbishments but never lost its character despite the brand new rooms especially in the Garden Wing ...
Looking forward to having you at The Arusha Hotel sometimes soon !
Best,
Iman

First of all, the location: in Clock Tower, in the center of Arusha, it is actually the best place to visit the city center. We were at walking distance from several markets, Maasai market being my favorite (things being cheeper than everywhere else). We had a warm welcome at the hotel, everything was handled perfectly so we did not even have to ask for something!! The room was just perfect, good volume, with a great view on the garden.
My favorite was the breakfast! I've had many in Tanzania, but never at this level of quality and service, so the day could start really fine with it!

The hotel was for us the starting point of a safari, which we could not plan before arrival. Actually, we got it arranged very fast so we could go for a safari 2 days after arrival!!

And don't miss the Hatari bar, that makes you travel way back in time.

We spent one night here before embarking on our safari. It's a very nice place. Rooms were comfortable and quiet. Dinner and breakfast was very good, and prices seemed reasonable. It's in the heart of town, so there is plenty of activity, including people trying sell their goods and services. The hotel access is gated with security staff, so you are safe within the hotel area. If you go outside the hotel property, expect to be swarmed by people trying to sell you tours, maps, t-shirts, etc. We were told to not go out after dark. We needed some additional cash and had more than enough help from locals to get to the ATM. We didn't feel unsafe, but weren't completely comfortable either. Overall, it was fine for our pre-safari stay.

I am not sure why anyone would ever return to Arusha. It is -despite the well meaning comments of others-quite confronting to westerners. It was a hotel that was quite separate to the rest of town which enjoys armed guards outside all of the banks. The people were all friendly, and we did not feel unsafe.

The hotel is OK, and the rooms are fine. Meals were OK.

But it is hard to escape the poverty surrounding the hotel, with people at the security gates and leaning over the walls trying to sell T shirts etc.

Dear anecessaryevil,
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment on our page. We are very much glad you enjoyed the hotel, the food, and the friendliness of our staff!
Just to give you an idea our hotel is ideally located in the center of Arusha at the clock tower roundabout. The clock tower popularly represents as you might know the midpoint of East Africa and was built to represent the center of the British empire in Africa from Cairo to Cape Town.
Arusha itself is becoming a real destination with a larger offer of activities and is already a very busy destination for the East African Market in terms of conferences and meetings. It also remains the perfect place to accommodate leisure guests before and after Safaris in Northern Tanzania !
The Arusha Hotel is also very known for being the oldest hotel in town - since 1894 !
Thanks afain !

We had a very good experience here despite negative things said in other reviews. The staff, from reception to waiters, are excellent and very friendly, if you engage them in conversation. We learned a lot from them about Arusha and Tanzania. Our room faced the gardens and was very quiet from the outside. However, sound proofing between rooms was not sufficient to keep us from hearing our neighbors talking at night.
Our meals were very good, especially since we enjoyed the Indian selections on the menu. One can sit outside on a covered terrace looking over the gardens and they have heaters in case it gets cool for dinner.
A lot of good wood is used in the rooms and the furniture in the lobby and lounge areas is also old fashioned adding to the colonial charm. Some pieces could use refurbishing.
The different flowers and birds we saw added interest to our stay which was very enjoyable.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms face the garden area; those facing the street are very noisy.

My wife and I started our safari experience in tanzania at the Arusha Hotel. It's a modern, if anonymous hotel with decent amenities. You'll appreciate it before you go out on your driving to Serengeti and other safari destinations. Nice, clean, wifi enabled, real shower. It will be a nice start and finish to the safari experience especially when compared to safari tents in the park.

We stayed at the Arusha Hotel for one week August 2013 and enjoyed it very much.
The staff was very helpful and polite. The breakfast buffet was excellent.
The location is excellent for exploring Arusha and we were able to walk to many shopping places and ride the Dala-Dala to other.
Once you stay that long the street vendors get to know and leave you alone.
