“Good amenities in central location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2012

Excellent facilities and good location or onward safari or treks to Mt Kilimajaro or Mt Meru.

Close walk into town during the day in 20 minutes. Private shaded gardens and poolside area. The restaurant offers substantial breakfasts and a varied menu.

Staff were helpful and friendly and rooms were cleaned to a high standard. Anderson was an extremely helpful porter who has been at the hotel over 20 years!

Having been fortunate to have travelled widely and extensively I found the friendliness and warmth of all the staff refreshing and my heartfelt thanks for making me feel so welcome and safe!

Room Tip: Request the modern building and higher rooms give wonderful views and are accessible by lifts.

We made a stop here with a group of others in our safari tour. Thank goodness it was only for one night. The hotel ( more like motel ) may have been acceptable back when it was built but today it is run down, dirty with rude staff to boot.

All of our group admitted they have stayed in some fairly hairy places throughout their years of travelling - but this was by choice at motels or backpackers at $20-50 per night.

I will be recommending to our tour company NOT to use this hotel in the future.

The reason we chose to stay in this hotel is due to the convince of them having a shuttle booking office right at the compound. I would recommend anyone traveling to Nairobi or moshi to stay here. The room were too small though and you hardly get around.

Superb arrangements were made by King Of Tanzania Safaris. We were 2 adults and 4 children and were allocated rooms 804 & 805. We fell in love with 805 bed immediately we got in. All crew were very hospitable, impressed with cleanliness, enjoyed coffee & tea provided in our rooms, breakfast was filling - spoilt with variety, my 4yr old was not left out while swimming as there is a baby pool. We had a 2 nights memorable stay not forgetting the beautiful view of Mt.Meru from 8th floor.

Room Tip: 805 is a superb double

I was on a Kilimanjaro climb and stayed at this hotel. After having such a fantastic and exhausting climb experience the hotel was a massive let down.

You walk into an impressive reception area with a nice pool area and bar and then as soon as you get into your room you might as well be in a dodgy motel.

The hotel is dated, I have had two rooms and in both the bathrooms flooded, most of the decor is run down, the mosquito nets have holes in them making them pointless, exposed wires from loose plugs, my current bathroom has a fan with no cover with the blades exposed. You can also hear conversations (etc.) from the room next door) and doors slam on all the floors.

Breakfast is not good, the selection is poor, hardly any fruit. However the restaurants for lunch and dinner do serve good food at reasonable prices - the only good thing in this hotel.

The airline I had to fly me from Kilimanjaro had got taken over so I asked reception to call them to confirm my flight details which had changed. They charged me for the calls which were local numbers! This is the first hotel I've had to charge for phoning an airline to check my travel.

The staff are just robots with no character, it's not like they are trying to serve you but more get your money.

If this hotel was $40 a night then fine, but $90 is a rip off, a dilapidated hotel at high tourist prices. Even at African standards. I'm sure it was good when first built but it's terrible now.

There's lot's of other hotels that get good reviews at the same price or lower, just unfortunately they didn't seem to have availability for my night at short notice. Check with your tour operator where you are staying and ask to change if it's this hotel to something else, I wished I had checked the reviews.

The Impala was probably the height of modernity when it was built. But that was some time ago and there doesn't appear to have been much money spent on the hotel since. From the life-sized elephant in the car park, crocodile in the dining room to random waterfalls in public areas, the hotel does try to do what it thinks tourists want (or at least might have 30 years ago). One thing that is very contemporary is however the prices. Like much of Toursit Tanzania, prices are charged in US $ but the quality is way below equivalently priced services in other countries. Tired decor, unreliable wifi, paper-thin interconnecting bedroom doors with large gaps and bathrooms that are uncleanable all await your dollars. However, like many things in life, it is all about context: if you have arrived at the Impala straight from the developed world, you will be disappointed. If you come here after camping on Meru or Kili using the stinking fly-ridden long drop loos, you may think it luxurious!

Like many others, we stayed at the Impala en route to the Serengeti. And that's the feel of the place - a transit bus terminal. Dark and dingy, a little confused as to what it wants to be (Shopping mall? Foodcourt? Hotel?); the room we had was oddly appointed, albeit on the large side, with a musty, shabby bathroom which contained a bathtub come shower that was quite cumbersome to access. The room had a fridge and a kettle - neither of which had the appropriate plug, thus were completely useless.
The food, apart from a pizza we shared, was pretty average, the breakfast buffet badly stocked and cold. The staff, however, were so enthusiastic that they cleared away our freshly made and steaming cups of coffee whilst we were getting some toast from the buffet...
If there is a redeeming factor for the Impala Hotel it is that everything was so odd that it made us laugh!
