“Perfect last night in Tanzania”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

We stayed here for one night at the end of our 2 weeks in Tanzania. This lodge is a small oasis on the outskirts of Arusha. Sitting out on the lawn watching the wildlife wander past a few metres in front of you is a very pleasant experience. The rooms are nice, comfortable and large, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Food is excellent, including for the vegetarians in our group. I would happily stay here again.

It was great to arrive at the lodge after our long flight from London and see Zebras a short distance from the reception desk and then to hear monkeys in the trees above us.

However, the rooms are very dated and tatty, old furniture, holes in mosquito nests, etc.

Food was average, but certainly nothing special and we didn't manage to get a cup of coffee the whole time we were there that didn't have lots of unfiltered coffee granules floating heavily in the cup (this place really needs a new cafetière!).

It was also very depressing to see a sad looking crocodile caged up in a tiny enclosure all alone - a bit wrong and unnecessary in a country with so much free wildlife.

Thank you very much for your review of Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary. I would like to assure you that none of the furniture in any of our guest rooms is more than 10 years old and that much of it is more recent than that. This furniture has however been designed to resemble that which would have been used when the lodge was new in the early 1960's since it is the experience of those early visitors to East Africa in this "romantic" era that we are trying to recreate for our guests. I would like, if I may, to touch upon your comment about our crocodile. It is important to be aware that all of the animals to be found in our sanctuary are rescued. In other words, they were brought here because they could not survive on their own in the wild. In those cases where an animal cannot be rehabilitated, then we provide it with a home for the remainder of its natural life. Given that our crocodile has lived in our sanctuary for close on 50 years, you will understand that it could not possibly survive on its own in the wilderness. The only alternative to providing it with the best home we are able would therefore be for us to put it down. However, this would run against the principles of the sanctuary which are to protect wildlife and not to destroy it.

This is a great place to start your visit to Tanzania. It's quiet, well kept and a short drive from the airport. Best of all you can sit on your veranda and watch the animals they have rescued as you relax and unwind after that long flight to Africa. It's a small older facility with its own charm and an authentic feel to it. You half expect to find Hemmingway sitting at the bar having a drink and entertaining his fellow travelers before dinner.

Room Tip: All the rooms overlook the sanctuary grounds.

We stayed here for 1 night after arriving in Tanzania very late at night. The room is minimal as is the bathroom but that's all we needed since we were so tired after a long flight from the US to Paris to Nairobi to Kilimanjaro Airport. It was a welcoming site when we woke up, opened up the curtains and could see the rescue animals around the lodge. Breakfast was nice (westernized) and we did a short tour around the sanctuary before leaving for Tarangire National Park. We saw porcupines, a peacock, tortoises, a zebra, alligator and monkeys in the trees and on the roof of our room.

This is definitely a nice play to rest if you've just arrived from a long flight.

Lodging is in cottages which are completely comfortable, though not very spacious. The facility dates to the 1960's and has been continually maintained and updated. The location is beautiful with numerous "rescued" animals in a park immediately adjacent to the cottages. Sitting on the porch and having an Eland walk within feet of you to inspect you, followed by a group of zebras is great fun. An assortment of cranes, storks, ostrich, and even eagles are on the property and provide entertainment. Colobus monkeys with their flowing tails play in the blooming jacaranda trees. Food is very good and dinner on the patio with a blazing fire pit is memorable and enjoyable. Located in Arusa, a gateway to Tanzania near the Kilamanjaro airport, this is an excellent spot to spend on a day of arrival or before departure, and also is a good base to explore the less visited and known Tanzanian parks in the area.

Room Tip: Room number three has a porch fronting the game viewing area. The eland and zebra are almost in you...

My husband and I stayed in this lodge at the beginning and at the end of our safari that was organized by Fox travel - Netherlands & their local partner Leopard Tours-Tanzania.

We arrived late at night the first night, and we had room 22, which lies in a building from 1959 in the front of the grounds, close to the main road.
Although this first room was in an older building, it had a kind of colonial charm, a good bed with a mosquitonet, and a good bathroom without any problems with plumbing or the towels.
We slept well at night but we were awoken by the noises of the busy main street the next morning.

We requested and got a much cosier and quieter room for the last day of our safari : room nr 1, which has a shared terras with room nr 2. The terras overlooks the enclosed mini-zoo, which is fun.The 3 bungalows that house rooms 1 till 6 are closest to the main building, and are in our opinion the best rooms on the grounds.

The grounds of the lodge are beautiful, and you can see your first African wildlife there, beginning with the rare ! black and white kolobusmonkeys in the trees and the blue monkeys that jump on the tin roofs of the cabins or might try to enter open cabindoors.
In the mini-zoo in front of the main building you can spot an eland, zebras, an ostrich, crowned cranes yellowbilled storks, and helmed guineafowl, and in the pens next to the entrance gate you can see porcupines, a crocodile, and an eagle.

On the grounds next to the entrance gate is also a small wooden shed where some woodcarvers work and sell their wares at better prices than in the shops, if you haggle a little.
There is also a bigger shop next to the reception of the hotel. They have a somewhat bigger range of souvenirs and necessities at fixed prices

Breakfast was a buffet the first time because there was big group of tourists present, and the second time we could order à la carte, because we were the only guests in the hotel at that time.
Both types of breakfast were very tasty. The same was true for the dinner we had on our last night, which also was very good. The staff was very friendly and helpfull.

So , although this lodge was of a different type than the 4-star accomodations on the rest of our safari tour, we really enjoyed our 2 night stay there, especially in room nr 1.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 to 6 are nicer, closer to the main building and quieter

The Lodge is located only half an hour from Kilimanjaro Airport. Brilliant if you have just come off a long haul flight (especially after a plane change at Nairobi). A very peaceful oasis with the animal sancutary literally on your door step. Having a coffeee with zebra and waterbuck passing by is a slightly surreal experience having just stepped off a plane. The hotel is not a flashy glass place but something with a colonial style and furnishings. To be fair it could do with some updating. Rooms 3,4 and 5 are probably the best as they are quiet and close to the main building. Some buildings are close to a busy main road. Only problem is the monkeys using the metal roofs as a highway around the site - but that is part of the experience. Food and service was excellent - both dinner around the firepit and the fabulous breakfast. If you get the chance to take a guided walk through a local village - do it. You get an insight into the local way of life and it can be humbling how people get by on so little yet are happy. Overall a brilliant start to our safari but don't expect a high tech, ultra modern place. It has 'character'.

Room Tip: Rooms 3,4 and 5 are probably the best - quieter and close to the main building.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary is located within 33 acres of mature, well manicured gardens bounded on one side by the tranquil waters of the Usa River and on the other by the private Sanctuary where our wildlife and birdlife reside. This wildlife and birdlife provide many of our guests with their first exciting game viewing experience. The Mount Meru Game Sanctuary was established in 1960 and over the course of the last half a century and more has received rescued animals from the wild. Normally either injured or orphaned, the sanctuary's first priority is always to rehabilitate these animals and to return them to their natural habitat. In cases where this is not possible, they are released into the sanctuary grounds where, joined by an enormous variety of birdlife, they are able to enjoy the unique freedom offered by our very safe environment. By choosing to stay with us, our guests play a very important role in helping these animals since the activities of the sanctuary are financed entirely by the lodge. Mount Meru Game Lodge is extremely fortunate to receive daily visits from troops of Black & White Colobus Monkeys. The Lodge features 15 guestrooms, including 2 suites, which seamlessly blend understated elegance with contemporary style. Our two suites lie generously situated in the garden overlooking the sanctuary. Each with a cozy bedroom and open living area, complete with fireplace. Both rooms offer a private garden gazebo where one can blissfully relax and soak up an atmosphere of well being. The main building of the lodge consists of a reception area, lounge and bar. The lounge, with its enormous picture windows and comfortable furniture, provides for relaxation in intimate surroundings. The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of spirits, beers and minerals which are complemented by a carefully selected collection of wines. To the front of the main building is a terrace which is shaded by enormous old Mango trees and which enjoys magnificent views over mature, carefully tended gardens to the Sanctuary beyond. In the grounds of the lodge can be found an 'outdoor dining room' which consists of a covered makuti restaurant located in our mature a gardens. The garden with its camp fire allows our guests to dine under the African star-lit sky whilst listening to the exotic night sounds. FREE WiFi is available to all visitors in the Lodges' public areas. Throughout its long history, the lodge & sanctuary have been a popular stop over for many VIP's and Government visitors. Various Presidents of African countries, celebrities, entrepreneurs and members of European Royal families have stayed with us. ... more   less
