“Tranquil & Beautiful”
Reviewed 21 October 2008

We were supposed to arrive here at approximately 9am and stay until 9am the following day, unfortunately, due to flight delays our stay was cut almost in half and we were robbed of more time in this wonderful place

Our room was no.1. which I fell in love with immediately. The decor of the whole place was unique and in my opinion beautiful. The best part about our room was the location, right on the edge of a small lake with storks galore. The animals on the sanctuary were a mere stones throw away. Despite the nearby road, I was completely able to lose myself in the immediate surroundings.

Food was good & the hospitality was great, the Manager (I think his name was John?) was extremely welcoming and did everything to ensure all his guests had the most wonderful time.

As we were not there during the day, we had no time to visit the sanctuary and we've vowed we must go back to experience it.

Our stays in Tanzania (this was our 3rd visit) have often been to Sopas & Serenas and while these are great and have their plus points, it was truly refreshing to stay at such a small, individual, beautiful place. I would certainly recommend for anyone looking for somewhere to stay in Arusha

We spent the first night of our safari holiday at Mount Meru Game Lodge in September 2008. Conviniently located half an hour's drive from Kilimajaro Int Airport, it enabled us to spend a relaxing afternoon recovering from our overnight flight.
Our bedroom was clean and comfortable and as other reviews have said, very much in the old colonial style. The bathroom although clean is in need of some modernisation.
In the afternoon we were invited to go on an organised walk around the local area. We were taken into the township of Usa River, which gave us an early insight into the lives of the local population. Like everywhere we went in Tanzania, the locals were charming and there was no sense of our not feeling welcome. A visit to the local orphanage was an unforgettable highlight of our entire week.
Back at the Lodge, our evening meal consisted of a choice of a couple of starters and two main courses, plus a veggie option. The food was OK without being memorable. Service was discreet and friendly.

This property was highly recommended to us by some friends who stayed there in 2007 and we organised our trip so that we could spend 2 nights at Mount Meru Game Lodge at the beginning of our Tanzania safari. The hotel grounds were green and lush, the animals and birds in the sanctuary provided us with many hours of pleasure - we even saw troops of black & white colobus monkeys during our stay! The accommodation was delightful and the food and service excellent. Of special note are the walks offered by the lodge through the local township where we met Tanzanians from all walks of life. A real eye opener which we would not have missed for anything.

The place is located in a beautiful setting with an adjoining sanctuary. All rooms vary in size and decoration, with rooms in the calm backyard with a river and others in the more public part with direct view on the pond. The atmosphere is grand with the general manager creating a truly intimate atmosphere and making guests feel welcome. The food is extremely good with great attention to detail and very accomodating staff in the restaurant.
However, the place needs a good cleaning and partly renovation to justify the price we had to pay. In summary, booking this will get you a brilliant insight into the grand style of East Africa with a touch of decay.

  • Liked — Friendly and acoomodating staff
  • Disliked — Lack of cleanliness
  • Tips/Secrets — Tanzania is an expensive place to stay, check hotels thoroughly before booking to ensure value for money

intimateplaces, Owner & Manager at Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary, responded to this review, 14 November 2008
Thank you for your very frank review of Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary. The property has been completely renovated in recent years and the Interior Designer responsible for the works carried out did try her utmost to create an ambiance very similar to the one which would have existed in the early 1960's when the lodge was originally built. If her efforts gave you a feeling of a "property in decay" then she must have got it slightly wrong somewhere along the way and for this I can but apologise on her - as well as my own - behalf. Sincerely, Marc Lawson

Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary provided the perfect start to our Tanzania safari. To be able to enjoy such a wide array of wildlife and birdlife within less than 30 minutes after leaving the airport was a wonderful bonus. Friendly staff and very good food.

  • Disliked — N/A
  • Tips/Secrets — Try to arrange your safari in such a way that you spend 2 nights at this property.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary is located within 33 acres of mature, well manicured gardens bounded on one side by the tranquil waters of the Usa River and on the other by the private Sanctuary where our wildlife and birdlife reside. This wildlife and birdlife provide many of our guests with their first exciting game viewing experience. The Mount Meru Game Sanctuary was established in 1960 and over the course of the last half a century and more has received rescued animals from the wild. Normally either injured or orphaned, the sanctuary's first priority is always to rehabilitate these animals and to return them to their natural habitat. In cases where this is not possible, they are released into the sanctuary grounds where, joined by an enormous variety of birdlife, they are able to enjoy the unique freedom offered by our very safe environment. By choosing to stay with us, our guests play a very important role in helping these animals since the activities of the sanctuary are financed entirely by the lodge. Mount Meru Game Lodge is extremely fortunate to receive daily visits from troops of Black & White Colobus Monkeys. The Lodge features 15 guestrooms, including 2 suites, which seamlessly blend understated elegance with contemporary style. Our two suites lie generously situated in the garden overlooking the sanctuary. Each with a cozy bedroom and open living area, complete with fireplace. Both rooms offer a private garden gazebo where one can blissfully relax and soak up an atmosphere of well being. The main building of the lodge consists of a reception area, lounge and bar. The lounge, with its enormous picture windows and comfortable furniture, provides for relaxation in intimate surroundings. The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of spirits, beers and minerals which are complemented by a carefully selected collection of wines. To the front of the main building is a terrace which is shaded by enormous old Mango trees and which enjoys magnificent views over mature, carefully tended gardens to the Sanctuary beyond. In the grounds of the lodge can be found an 'outdoor dining room' which consists of a covered makuti restaurant located in our mature a gardens. The garden with its camp fire allows our guests to dine under the African star-lit sky whilst listening to the exotic night sounds. FREE WiFi is available to all visitors in the Lodges' public areas. Throughout its long history, the lodge & sanctuary have been a popular stop over for many VIP's and Government visitors. Various Presidents of African countries, celebrities, entrepreneurs and members of European Royal families have stayed with us. ... more   less
