Coming upto the highlands of Arusha from a steaming hot coastal island.... getting a beatiful room with all facilities in place and nicely decorated, mingling down to the terace for some smooth drinks with the Chef, getting a loveful presentation of the menu of the night... later enjoying the excellent dinner itself accompaigned by some selected good wines... wieving the night fall over the hills of Arusha... rolling happy and in good company back to the room for a full night sleep in a very comfortable bed.... I mean... HOW NICE WAS THAT!!

Thanks for a wonderful evening, you know it was not the first time, and surely not the last. Keep it up.

Great cottages, very clean, great sized beds. Staff always helpful, delicious food if a little European inspired. Well worth staying more than one night, just to relax by the pool and shake off the flight or the dust from the safari. Location delivers amazing sunsets. Local farm means domestic animal noises at night but hey that's Africa. Wouldn't hesitate to visit again

Room Tip: All the rooms come with kitchens, rainforest showers, large comfortable beds and international tv

We spent our first two nights Machweo/Onsea House on our 3rd trip to Africa, and we couldn't have started a better place.

Machweo turned out to be quite a charming B&B close to the center of Arusha. The staff was fantastic –friendly, hospitable and accommodating. Recognizing that we wanted to strengthen our Swahili to better communicate with the children at Penda Watoto (an orphanage we support), all the staff joined in assisting us with pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.

The grounds, gardens and accommodations are built on a hill side and offers excellent views. It is not as luxurious as other African camps but quite nice and certainly at the very high end in Arusha.

Dining at Machweo is an experience in itself. Heated pots of coal placed by each dining table emanated warmth on cool nights to enjoy the open-air dining terrace. The terrace, overlooking gardens and the hills of Arusha’ suburbs, added a nice ambience to meals. We could easily pass time here observing the villagers lives - feeding livestock, building homes, caring for children, and passing on foot on an unpaved thoroughfare in front of Machweo.

If we had to pinpoint one aspect of Machweo that makes this place charmingly unique, it would be its charismatic chef and manager. Axel, a classically trained chef, had a successful career in Belgium. When an opportunity arose to create and manage a restaurant in Tanzania, Axel made the move.

Axel’s goal was to create one of the finest restaurants in Tanzania, but he had a major challenge – namely building a culinary team to prepare creative gourmet dishes. He noticed for many Tanzanians, food is basic and utilitarian. So Axel decided to offer a free culinary training program for local Tanzanians to learn the art of fine cuisine. The training program has apparently been quite successful in providing locals opportunities at Machweo, as well as new Tanzanian restaurants and fine European establishments too.

Axel exhibited all the qualities of renowned chefs and we truly enjoyed all our meals at the restaurant and would certainly make this a home away from home when we visit our friends in Arusha and the orphanage.

After flying into Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, we spent our first night at Onsea House which is a great way to begin a safari. The staff is excellent. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with every amenity. Dinner and breakfast were great and we definitely recommend Onsea House!

Room Tip: Every room should be great!

We stayed three nights in the Onsea / Machweo and had an excellent time. The rooms are beautiful, large and have everything you need. There is a great view on Mt Meru. There are not that many rooms so it never really gets crowded. There is no street noise or other bothering sounds. Staff is very friendly and know how to deal with western tourists. Breakfast was a bit disappointing, but overall we had a wonderful stay in this hotel.
