We have just returned from a 10 day stay in Khao Lak resort and it was amazing! I wouldn't fault this resort at all! Staff were most welcoming, friendly and super efficient! We stayed in a beachfront bungalow which was superb! On one the side the wonderful beach, on the other a private entrance to the extremely well maintained pool! What a delight to wake to the sound of rolling waves and by the time we had returned from breakfast each morning the room was cleaned, towels replaced, mini bar filled- all set to order! A short walk to town there are plenty of restaurants and bars although we were very pleased with the quality of food available at any of the resorts 3 restaurants. A short stroll down the beach led to peters bar where you will always be welcomed for a drink and some laughs! If you are looking for the perfect place to unwind in the most beautiful surroundings then this resort should meet all your wishes! Peaceful and relaxed- a little slice of paradise! We were devastated to leave and certainly hope to return!

When we arrived at Koh Lak we were greeted with a tea and lovey Thai welcome. Our first impression was we had arrived to a beautiful scenic paradise our expectations more than met. My friend and I wanted to have some chilling time and have a lovey setting to enjoy whilst taking stock of our lives. We certainly found it here. The ambiance was amazing, the weather (January 2014) perfect both day and night (30 C day, 22/24 night), the beach and sea, white and blue with plenty of space for all.(no Rain, yippee as we are from England!! but windy at times) You could walk some 4 km to enjoy the sea and sand, with bars and restaurants and massage parlors all along. Very orientated to couples and families had just the right peacefulness. If you wanted to up the tempo a little going into the town would up the beat.. Sleep was a challenge a few nights due to high winds but not stormy.

We had booked a beach bungalow which looked perfect but we were given an upgrade! to a pool villa.....wow...our own pool as well. I cant say more than it was the best 11 nights for a beach orientated holiday. In the town lots of restaurant opportunities our favorite was 'Chef Restaurant' lovely lady owner called Aoy, recommend a try. and dont forget the Moo Moo club!!

Room Tip: Always go for a minimum of a deluxe beach bungalow or pool villa if you can afford the diffierence

Khao Lak Resort
We stayed here for 3 weeks late December 13 to mid-January 14,
We arrived rather jet lagged, check in was fairly painless and after we had a few hours’ sleep we took a look around. It soon becomes apparent that this hotel is quite large and very spread out and on many levels, so to get anywhere involves going up and down various steps and slopes. At first you don’t really notice because the whole hotel is actually in the jungle, but after a while getting about can become a bit of a chore.

The winning/redeeming feature of this hotel is its situation, in the jungle, and by the beach which is just stunning, given that this hotel was full it certainly does not give that impression and it was mostly very peaceful and quiet.

LOCATION: The hotel is on the south side of Khao Lak and in a slightly elevated position but definitely on the quieter end of town (which is a plus) with some other large hotels around it. During the day there are always taxis waiting at the entrance to take you anywhere you fancy (but oddly not in the evening) the main drag is 100 Bhat the market is 150 Bhat but we found within 10 minutes’ walk there are many eateries and shops. We found the market held on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday to be well worth a visit there was amazing amount of different street food to eat plus bars and the obligatory tat stores but all good fun.

THE ROOM(S): After check in we were driven to our first room (424) which was well appointed with large bed and separate bath/ shower rooms all clean and tidy nothing to find fault with and a great view. The room is located at the back of the hotel grounds near the main road at the top of a hill and quite a hike down to and back up from the pool and beach. On the second day we began to feel that we were a little out of the way and asked to be moved nearer the pools and beach, were told yes but not for 7 days as they were fully booked, at the time we weren’t too fussed by this. So after a week we were moved, a little bit annoyed as we had asked to see the new room before we moved, this never happened.
The new room (347) was indeed closer to everything with a decent view but it became obvious this was an older building and a bit smaller and only a bath shower combo a facelift would be good, and the balcony was over looked slightly on one side, would we have moved if we were given a preview? Probably not, but by this stage, after having a couple of conversations with the reception staff we decided it’s not worth the hassle as it always seemed we were inconveniencing them for whatever reason. Anyway every day the room was made up and each day you are given 2 small bottles of water. One point to note in the shower for both rooms the tap has a bit of a” hair trigger” it is either set cool or you move it a micron to the hot side, and instantly you are in lava hot scolding territory, maybe an issue with small children!
Also beware There is building work ongoing behind this block at the moment so there is some noise as another large building is erected the noise is noticeable from the room and pools at this end of the resort.

FOOD: Breakfast was ok with quite a variety that should keep most people happy; you can have eggs any way you want then( provided they are fried hard boiled or in an omelette!) My partner asked for poached and scrambled on a couple of occasions but was told the same each time, and after a week and a half it all did become rather samey.
Lunch was very good when we ate at the hotel all food was very well presented and really tasty be it Thai or other, the Thai food was toned down for delicate western palates but hey if you want spice…ask! You could order at the main restaurant area or at the small bar a hundred yards away to the left as you faced the sea.
We never dined in the evening at the hotel, reasons, Firstly, there are plenty of places to eat just down the road, go to the hotel entrance and turn left 5 minutes’ walk max to at least 4 restaurants with many more further on. Secondly but more importantly Lack of atmosphere after about 7pm everything just seems to go dead at the hotel, there are people dining but it is deathly quiet, so we decided to give it a miss.
I know this has been mentioned before in other TA reviews of this hotel and I can totally agree with them, The one thing this hotel desperately needs is a focal point a cocktail bar somewhere people can chill out and mingle/ chat in the evening unfortunately without it this place lacks a character or personality.

SUNBEDS: There is a “no reservation of sunbeds” policy here, but I can tell you that absolutely no one pays any heed to it, and from what I saw the hotel does not enforce it anyway! Kind of amused me that every morning the usual suspects (Germans) got up at first light to reserve sunbeds and yet all day there were tons of empty ones around them, still I suppose they’re happy! Given the fully booked status we still always managed to find plenty of unoccupied sunbeds (pool or beach)

THE BEACH AND POOLS: well I have to say very impressed with the beach, it is in a National park so no sunbeds allowed on the beach, the sand is fine and golden and the snorkelling in the rocks just off the beach is pretty impressive too providing the water is clear, did not see any beggars hawkers or dogs at all so another bonus and for sundowners Peter Bar to the Left of the hotel was quite a popular place.

The pools are plentiful and wind their way through the resort and can be quiet and often are, but what does tend to happen is parents with kids tend to materialise in the afternoon after being on the beach as it is more shaded, and then it does get noisier!

THE STAFF: The Manager was very approachable, but the majority of staff were less so, I don’t know whether it was the time of year and they were overwhelmed but it was hard to get a smile from anyone, they all seem preoccupied or just getting on with their jobs they just seemed indifferent.
If you read through many TA reviews as I have, the underlying thing that can make or break a holiday for people is the attitude of the staff.

The only time when we saw the staff come to life a 3rd of the way through our stay was at the New Year’s party then it was a totally different atmosphere and what a party really spectacular in every respect outstanding, however the next day …back to normal.

Unfortunately it seems that in “the land of a thousand smiles” at this particular resort they leave them at reception at the start of the day! I should qualify this further and say we hired a car and visited 5 or 6 other hotels in the vicinity (including our first choice) and without exception the greeting we got was really warm and welcoming from all the staff we met as we looked though those hotels….stark contrast!

To cap it all off after a 3 week stay there was no goodbye, and no did we enjoy our holiday? Just “thanks your pick up is at 5” nice touch!

I understand that this year there is going to be some building work carried out and various things are being rebuilt and moved let’s hope they improve this hotel for the better.

I would give this Hotel 3.5 stars if TA would let me but it won’t and 4 stars would be, for me, too generous.

We really wanted and tried to like this hotel it was just a combination of little things that let it down, ok this was not our first choice of hotel but we booked late and saw TA showed really good reviews so we went with this one instead.

Don’t get me wrong we did have a fantastic holiday but, in the end, we were quite glad to leave.

We will come back to Khao Lak but not this hotel.

Dear Khun 1000-Yard-Stare,

We thank you for your review of Khaolak Resort in TA. We are happy that you find the hotel to your liking.

At the same time we also regret that you find some things, especially staff behavior, not to your satisfaction. We have made our own investigations and think that some of the people you came across were not from our Food & Beverage department. They appear to be our back office staffs and unfortunately are not too experienced, due to their language competency, when coming face-to-face with our guests. We have since informed all department heads of the sensitivity of this matter and to ensure their staffs show a more positive and friendly appearance to all guests, regardless of whether they are front or back office staffs.

We note your comment about the lack of variety at our breakfast egg station. We have a variety of egg dishes but these remain the same as we assume they should be sufficient to our guests’ needs for a 1-2 week stay. However, we make changes to our other hot dishes over a 1 week period so as to increase the variety of dishes available.

We have also taken into consideration your other comments and will try to make improvements where possible. We thank you again for your feedback and especially for the favorable comments you have for us. Meanwhile, we cherish the hope that you may have a change of heart and visit us again in the future. We would be most happy to welcome you back to our new and expanded property, should that opportunity be made available to us.

Warmest regards,

Daeng Nithithoranan

This was my first trip to Thailand. When we first arrived we were dropped off at the main gate, up by the main road. There was a small hotel buggy that picked us up and drove us down to the lobb. There they greeted us with a fresh cold towel and some kind of green tea. They told us about the facilities and such. When at our room we had this amazing view of the rainforest and the sea in the background... After a few days we took a longer walk along the beach and quickly noticed that our hotel had the most fine-grained sand. Our part of the beach was very quiet and no salespeople. This hotel is just outside the main area och Khao Lak but it takes just 5-10 min to walk there. This was paradise!!

Dear Khun Carl-Johan-O,

Greetings from Khaolak Resort.

We are very grateful for a wonderful review, in Tripadvisor, of your recent stay with us. We assume that the travel company you used to reserve your holiday at Khaolak Resort, only used buses to transport the clients from airport to Khaolak area, instead of private vans or cars. As you can appreciate the bus is unable to access the Khaolak Resort property and for this reason, they let your get off on the main road.

Everyone of the Khaolak Management and Staff are nature friendly, with the result, we are pride ourselves in being able to offer the surreal unadulterated tranquility of nature, allowing you to relax along the 400 meters of quiet beachfront.

Thank you again for choosing Khoalak Resort for your first trip to Thailand, all of our team are looking forward to welcoming you back next winter.

Great location with really lovely beach in front.

Food at restaurant at night really good and surpasses the numerous beach shack places where food is cheap but a bit average. The Wanaburee next door does really good food too.

Generally staff lovely but just couple of consistently indifferent bar staff at pool bar which was a surprise in Thailand.

I really do find the German habit of securing the sun loungers quite irksome and there are plenty of them so expect this irritation or beat them at their own game and put your towels on before you go to bed..

Rooms quite good and for the money good value.

Dear Khun Ash 186338

Thank you very much for taking your valuable time in writing a review on your recent visit to Khaolak Resort.

Our management team and I would like to extend our special thanks to you, as we were all delighted to read about your holiday experience with us. We will take notice of your comments re a couple of pool bar employees not providing the excellent service both of us expect and hopefully on your next visit you will see an improvement.

We are aware of the Sun Lounge problem and to date have not been able to find a suitable solution to the problem and hope that after the renovations next summer we will have a better situation for all of our guests for Sun Lounges.

We have just returned from Khao Lak after spending 8 nights at the wonderful Khao Lak resort. We had booked a superior room (344) which was really close to the swimming pool. The room was really spacious and decorated in an authentic style. On arrival the bed and bath tub were sprinkled in rose petals. The resort is built on a hill amongst tropical rainforest so if you are not mobile then this resort would not be suitable as there are lots of steps and slopes. Given that there is a lot of vegetation expect plenty of wildlife! Put lots of DEET on at night as there are mozzies. We also saw lizards and a huge monitor lizard stroll from the pond! The grounds are beautifully cared for by the staff and the environment is quiet and peaceful. The pools are beautiful and you are a stone's throw away from the gorgeous beach and turquoise sea. We had breakfast at the hotel - there was a good selection with eggs / omelettes cooked on request. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The beach bar / pool bar were reasonably priced. There is a spa on site and the massages were excellent. The hotel is 10 mins walk into town - downhill - you can get into a taxi van on the way back at the cost of 50 baht - approx £1. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you want a relaxing holiday - we are already thinking of returning next year!

Room Tip: 344 is a good standard room .if you want to pay more for a bungalow I would recommend 215.

Dear Khun 3intrepidtravellers,

We sincerely thank you for all the positive comments in the review you have posted on trip advisor. We are gratified to read your review of the hotel and all the things you enjoyed and appreciated while here.

You are right, being Khaolak Resort’s guests, have to be very active to get around the facilities of the resort and also suitable for travellers who like nature and tranquility. In the hotel compound, there are many varieties of local species to enjoy in their natural habitat. It’s like being in ‘A Little Amazon’ at Khaolak Resort.

We do have Elderly Guests as in early November we had a guest from Germany. She is 84 years old and managed to be with us for 14 days easily. Also during the Christmas period we had an elderly couple from UK for a forth night with us, they both also managed to the terrain during their holiday.

Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to welcoming you back at Khaolak Resort in near future.
