S Tara Grand Hotel
Ranked #2 of 52 Hotels in Surat Thani
Reviewed 29 July 2014

This is a new hotel in Surat Thani about 8 months. Suitable for those on transit enroute to samui or flying back to other thai cities.

Location :
It is located slightly outskirts of the main town of Surat Thani but the plus point it is near the major shopping mall Central Festival and Home Pro. If you book through hotel the transfer to airport will cost you THB 650 1 way and Donsak pier THB 1500 and for thai standard is not cheap. Journey to both location will be 15 minutes and 1 hour respectively.

Arrival Experiences:
Outdoor car park many lots available if you drive your own or rental car. Upon our arrival we were approached by a porter to assist us.
Checked in were quite straight forward but they will request THB 500 deposit for your room key card. They only issued 1 key. It kind of strange as key card you can actually request and program extra duplicate key in most hotel. Unless it is a conventional key

Room:
Room size is spacious with the standard in room facilities of wall mounted samsung TV, small mini bar, A single sofa seat with a small coffee table and foot rest. Single multi split Air con. Kettle and hair dryer. Bathroom is simple standard layout of separate toilet and standing shower. No bathtub for the room I booked for. One complaint is the hot water supply is inconsistent and toilet grouting also need some touch up now as stubborn stains had started to built up. Overall cleanliness in the room is still good. The room information and regulations file the information in English need review as there were many spelling and typo error and for a foreigner to read it can translate into a major joke.example in their regulation they stated " rent will be pain in advance" we are not laughing but the management need to review it before placing in all their rooms. One plus is wifi is free here.

One major experience we encountered is mosquito. We didn't opened the window or door throughout our stay but we're surprised to have mosquito biting us in the night while me and my partner were asleep. We realized the floor maid while cleaning the rooms in the morning on the floor they leave the door opened, several rooms entrance doors were left opened and this may contribute to mosquitos flying into the room and our room. The management should seriously look into this constructive feedback. We understand mosquito are everywhere but prevention is importance. Suggest their housekeeping have some electric mosquito repellent or close the door while cleaning vacant or occupied room.

Breakfast:
Restaurant capacity cannot cater to the need if the hotel is full capacity. Overall breakfast is between average and good. I will said it is cater more to Thai guest as they were many thai guests staying in the hotel. It you are not expecting a international standard of America buffet it is acceptable with the standard coffee/tea. Fruits, toast bread some fried rice and thai dish available. Everything's here is self service and do not expect the waitress to serve you or refill your coffee or tea, the staff were on site just to clear and set the table.

Overall:
Our feedbacks and comments is more of our opinion and experiences and hope some of the valid and constructive feedbacks will be look into. Personally we felt this is a good hotel for transit and short stay. We will certainly

Where wifi will cost in almost all hotels in Bangkok, in the south of Thailand, it is most likely going to be free of charge. This decent hotel brought wifi to the max. Five access points in a short corridor, every floor, and some more installed in our rooms. I had one in mine. They made sure you get max reception for that much needed VPN connection into your office during your stay. Two nights there on a business trip and on the third day, I was radiating wireless signals. Neighboring notebooks were logging on to me. So were iPhones and Galaxies. That aside, rooms were excellent for the price I paid, quality sheets and comfy bed all up to my expectations during my stay. Central Plaza is nearby but it was not within walking distance. Neither were there any restaurants nor anything touristy within a brisk walk. Although the inconvenience, what's there really in Surat Thani anyway? Breakfast, very limited selection, but this hotel was priced really low, so again no complains. I will always remember this hotel for the best wifi coverage there ever was in my travels.

Basically is a new Hotel with big clean rooms, (not heavily furnished) but is adequate for a good night stay. Is far from town area but plus points is near the Central Plaza shopping mall. Good place to hang out, shopping and chain food.

Overall very pleasant.

Having stayed in the hotels around the airport which are mostly horrid, I decided to travel into the city and booked a night here. Overall I'm happy with this hotel and it suited the purpose we were traveling for, but there were some negatives. The first is that the WIFI was not working. We were staying in connected rooms (booked via Agoda as being a family room) and in one of the rooms found a modem not connected to anything (no such modem in the other room). We called and they said they were sending someone up. After about 20 minutes he hadn't come so we called again. He came shortly later looked at the box but seemed clueless and said he'd be back. An hour later didn't come back but we found him in the hallway and he said the WIFI was out hotel wide and they are not sure when it will comeback. It never did comeback that night and checking out the next day we didn't try it in the morning.

No swimming pool nor balcony are other minuses but we knew that coming in. All of our (granted limited) interactions with staff were similar. Not exactly rude just seemed like first day on the job type responses.

The best positive is the location. It is just down the road from Central Plaza. We came using a GPS but it nor Google Maps could find the place. Oddly neither could they CentralPlaza but once we knew it was next to that, entering Swensons, Starbucks, Chareon Optical (the common chains found in CPs around Thailand) we seen all matched so knew that was the location. They told us on the phone it was next to Home Pro and with that we then found it no problem. The CentralPlaza it is next to is very large and worth the visit. The arcade on the top floor (top 2 floors for kids area) is very unique. I've been to many in Thailand and this was this was my favorite. An oversize Tetris Machine, 3D Game, Karaoke Machines, Korean video games, etc. Tons of brand name shops and discount in the halls shopping too.

The other pluses are the hotel looks great from the outside. The lobby looks business like, the rooms are clean, AC is cold. The beds were fine and the included breakfast was above average.

There are no well known hotel brands in Surat Thani, so we took a gamble on a family room at the recently constructed S Tara Grand hotel and were pleasantly surprised.
We were met by a team of young, efficient and friendly front desk staff who had us checked in and up to our room in minutes.
The hotel is new, modern, and spacious (family room was approx 100m2, with 2 bathrooms) The bathroom had a bath tub and shower, plus all the amenities (tooth brushes, shaving kit, etc) WiFi and AirCon worked fine for us.
Breakfast is served downstairs and is typical "Thai Hotel" breakfast fare; ham in water, hot dogs, fried eggs, bread, congee, juices, coffee etc... Personally, I prefer to make myself a few ham and egg sandwiches from the buffet items. The "thai-food" room service we ate the evening before was tasty, fast and ridiculously inexpensive and the minibar was stocked with soft drinks and beers at 7-11 prices.
To find the hotel simply head for "HomePro" which is nextdoor, or head for the "Central Plaza" shopping mall on the other side of the road. There's ample parking in the hotel car park.
We only stayed here as a stopover on a road trip to the south of Thailand, this isn't a resort hotel, it's more a business style hotel (like a premier inn or travel lodge with big rooms) I'd recommend for a stop over or for business.
If the hotel management reads this, maybe a good idea to put a few "international dishes" on the room service menu, like a cheese burger :-) and add at least one English TV channel please - otherwise, keep up the good work, and a big thank you.

Room Tip: Top floor at the front.

Surat Thani is definitely not a place one would choose to visit. it is Thailand at its worst on a number of counts. However if you're enroute to to some of the best areas of Thailand (ie Koh Tao, Anthong Bay, Koh Samui or Koh Phangan) you're going to have to pass through it. if you're on a bus and ferry trip the best thing to do is pass through Surat Thani to the ferry If you're traveling independently, then there's going to be a chance you have to stop in or over in Surat Thani. Which is something we have done today (we live on the gulf of Thailand, decided yesterday to do a trip to Koh Samui, and decided to break the 9 hour drive to ferry at ST)

If you're in that situation, then this hotel is the absolute tops. We have stayed in absolute flea pits previously in ST but this is one of the most amazingly good value hotels I have ever stayed in in Thailand. it is new. It is so clean it squeaks. Dont know metreage of room but it must be in the 45 metre square category. Has good working area, plus chair, table for additional relaxing working. Big bed. Wetroom bathroom. fastest internet I have ever known in Thailand. Staff superb at reception and in the restaurant

Talking of restaurant, it's not bad. it has gone for a modern Bangkokian / European feel which it doesnt quite meet (lighting too harsh) but seating is comfortable, food is good and very cheap (not hotel prices at all). There was a particular problem with a french family in the restaurant the evening we ate there - and do hope they dont make a bad review as there were some significant difficulties they were causing and I got involved as I speak Thai and English and my husband French. REgardless of the issue (which was quite a normal one in Thailand) the girl serving them was absolutely superb. I take my hat off to her for dealing which was a difficult situation (some of caused by the restaurant staff, some caused by the unfortunate attitude of the French family)

If you are staying at this hotel it is also worth checking out the Thai restaurant opposite. A very strange place but a good place to eat. The place is enormous, there are huge tables and an industrial kitchen like I have never seen in Thailand before. However, there is no written menu, and when we asked what food was available it was fried rice. With chicken. Or with pork. But that was it. I saw the numerous cartons of coconut and carnation milk piled up and asked whether there might be a possiblity of a green curry ... no. Fried rice. Pork or chicken. Guess what we went with the fried rice. Which was I have to say the best we have ever had in Thailand - and came with a separate basket of raw vegetables and homemade sauces including the first ever orange chilli sauce I have ever tasted.

I came to the conclusion that this restaurant wasnt actually a restaurant - more an industrial supplier of food but whatever, cant fault the lady who runs it as despite her somewhat limited menu of fried rice was a delight

So if anyone is in Surat Thani for a night or two I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough- fr space, cleanliness, lovely staff and price ... indeed we will probably break our journeys down to the islands more now we know this place exists as a decent stop off place

Room Tip: if you're just passing through go for the cheapest - 950 baht for a huge room and good bathroom...

Great hotel, very new with good staff. Excellent value for money, close to Central Plaza shopping centre, walking distance. Great location for Surat Thani airport although it's about 15 kilometers away.
Wi Fi is very poor and would not connect

Room Tip: Pay £2 extra for the deluxe room
