“Awesome place for Nature Lovers”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

Spent 6 nights at Plaa's and will definitely return on my next trip! The accommodation is very comfy and clean & the service and food was excellent! Although there is only generator power available between 18:00 - 00:00, this adds to the atmosphere of the place. There is a lot of wildlife to be seen, without having to trek through the jungle. (Monitor lizards, birds, butterflies, geckos, squirrels, flying fish, dragonflies etc, etc.). Temple and waterfalls etc. is a short hike away. The view from the bungalows and restaurant is spectacular! If you are looking for a quiet "hideaway" in nature.......this is the place to be......

Plaa’s Bungalows, on Than Sadet Beach - Excellent!

Bungalows:
Of the four types of bungalows available, I chose the Rocky Modern bungalow for 650 baht per night. Excellent value for money. Dark stained wood floors and walls give the room a comfortable, good quality feeling, and the bathroom is nicely tiled. There’s a small double bed (which in my opinion is more like a large single, it would be uncomfortable sleeping 2 people) with an OK mosquito net. Good sized, old fan attached to the wall. Two small cane chairs without cushions, a small bedside table, and a basic sets of shelves (no hangers, no wardrobe, no drawers). Two complimentary hotel bath towels. A big set of sliding doors leads to the balcony, where you have an excellent hammock, an old but solid small wooden table and two simple cane chairs each with a cushion. Spectacular views to the east guarantee some amazing sunrises; apart from the value for money, the views are Plaa’s ultimate drawcard. Basic lace curtains at the balcony windows don’t serve much purpose at night.
The bathroom is generously sized and clean. Cold water only. Hand-held shower which can be set in place on a wall fixture, decent basin and mirror, Western toilet. Only one toilet roll is provided, but it’s probably better to use the small water squirter for that purpose anyway. Some might find the common SE Asian practice of throwing toilet paper etc into a bin confronting, but it’s much better than having the sewerage blocked.
The electrical plug outlet in the room is awkwardly placed next to a light switch, so I made use of the one in the bathroom to recharge my phone, digital camera etc.
Walking around the bungalow sets it creaking and wobbling slightly, which can be unnerving, but it’s very sturdy otherwise.
You can book online through their very straightforward website (Google ‘Plaa Thansadet resort’), though email contact with Plaa’s after my booking (via the website) was problematic and slow.

Possible dealbreakers: the room was never cleaned and the towels were never replaced for the length of my stay there. It didn’t bother me, but you could always ask Plaa if it gets annoying, especially the toilet bin. Cold water only. Electricity is only available from approx 6pm to 2am/3am, so the room gets uncomfortably warm in the early hours before sunrise. I recommend leaving the sliding doors open all night, and making nightly use of the mosquito net. Also, avoid leaving the balcony light on at night, as it attracts heaps of insects and geckos, including the biggest geckos I’ve ever seen.
I didn’t see many of the other bungalows, so I can’t really compare. The main difference between Rocky Modern and Rocky Standard (450 baht) seems to be that the Modern is larger, has a front door as well as a sliding door to the balcony, and a bigger bathroom. (In a Standard, you enter via the balcony, so the sliding door is effectively the front door, and unfortunately the shower stands over the toilet).

Setting:
Plaa’s is set up high on a very steep hillside above the beach and sea. This lends itself to some astonishing views, but it also means that access can be physically demanding. As mentioned in other reviews here, anyone with mobility difficulties should think about staying elsewhere at the beachside level. Bungalows are all built out from the hillside onto stilts and are very nicely integrated into the surrounding rocks and jungle. Plaa’s Restaurant takes full advantage of its position, and has what’s probably the best view in Than Sadet. The best access stairs are beyond the northern corner of the beach, passing underneath some boulders via a small low gap. Bringing luggage or a backpack via the gap is very difficult, if not impossible, so, with luggage, it’s often better to climb the (extremely steep) stairs behind the restaurant at Chill Chill, up to Silver Cliff/Mai Pen Rai 2, then walk across to Plaa’s from there.

Restaurant:
Easily one of the best in Than Sadet, if not the best. It’s also one of the cheapest. Their Thai curries are phenomenal, and the stir fries can be excellent. Breakfasts are unfortunately not their strength, though their Thai coffee is good. I preferred Silver Cliff / Mai Pen Rai 2 for breakfast, run by a very sweet Burmese woman and her family.
The restaurant has Wifi with poor to weak reception (it’s much better at Mai Pen Rai #1), which you can sometimes pick up in your bungalow.
The kitchen/reception is open daily at 8am and closes at 10pm (I think?).

Service:
In general, service at Plaa’s was very ordinary and slooooooooooow. Sometimes staff could be funny and sweet, and sometimes they could be extremely rude. The standard, however, was a mild unsmiling neglect. Hellos, thank yous and smiles were very rare, and when they did appear, sincerity was totally lacking. I saw three staff, though there might have been more: Plaa herself, who does almost all the cooking and management, her husband (?) who helped out at dinner, and her daughter. Plaa has workable English, her daughter has some, and her husband has almost none. Perhaps this was the reason for a couple of instances of really appalling treatment of customers that I saw during my stay.
In theory they have a safe for your valuables but I became suspicious. Every time I asked to get mine, they retrieved it from an unsecured plastic box pushed under the reception counter “because it’s easier”. Hmm.

Beach:
Absolutely stunning beach setting, far better than any of the other east coast beaches that I visited. Its isolation and difficult access mean that it’s kept a lot of its relaxed unspoilt atmosphere. Up close, however, it’s a different story. The beach is almost entirely pebble (OK in itself, but I was expecting white sand), and the water is very murky due to the nearby creek emptying into the sea. Snorkelling is almost pointless here. But the worst aspect is the presence of sea urchins. Due to some beachside net fishing by some locals, sea urchins are dragged up daily from the seabed and dumped / washed up on the shore! This was especially bad at the northern end of the beach. I saw countless people get injured. It’s still a wonderful beach with a very fine setting, but it was hard to avoid feeling disappointed. There’s plenty of shade in the afternoon, and a number of bungalow places have bars and restaurants right on the beachside.

Transport:
Plaa’s doesn’t organise any transport to Than Sadet so you need to get to the beach independently. At Thong Sala, when you get off the ferry, look out for the touts from Mai Pen Rai bungalows. I paid 400 B with them, which is a rip off, but there were no other reasonable options to get to Than Sadet. The truck takes about an hour to reach Than Sadet, and the last 30 minutes is on a horrifically bad, extremely steep dirt road. Isolation has its price! To get back to Thong Sala, Mai Pen Rai organises daily trucks at 10am for 200 baht per person (no need to book, just turn up). There’s also a very handy daily boat that travels between all the east coast beaches on its way to Koh Samui; it stops in Than Sadet at about 9.30am heading south, and arrives back on the return leg at about 2/2.30pm heading north. It’s a great way to get to Haad Rin or one of the other beaches for a day trip. The trip to Haad Rin takes about 45 minutes from Than Sadet.
You can hike to Thong Noi Pan beach (a far superior beach, but more touristed) from Than Sadet in about 60 to 75 minutes. The hike route is a challenging 3km walk along a steep rutted dirt track going through the jungle hills. You can find the route near the ranger station about 200 meters past the waterfalls, off the main access road.

Room Tip: It's definitely worth the extra money for a Rocky Modern bungalow or better.

Stayed here with my fiancee for four nights in July and we both thought it was great. We stayed in bungalow two and the view from the balcony was unbelievable considering the money you're paying. The resort is on top of the cliff at Than Sadet, so I wouldn't recommend it for travellers with mobility issues, but the views are beautiful and Plaa also runs a nice restaurant where we ate most nights. I' recommend this place for anyone looking for a bit of seclusion and a place where you don't get bothered at all by the staff at all unless you go looking for them. Highly recommended.

Plaa's restaurant sits above Than Sadet beach which gives you a panoramic view over the beach.

The food is inexpensive, well presented, fresh and tastes superb. I can recommend the Thai Omlette and the Fried Fish with Curry Sweet and Sour.

Even if you don't want to eat just walk up for the view.

overlooking the bay, old-fashioned small and basic bungalows. Furniture is rundown.
The really bad thing is: fan runs only some hours in the evening (the other resorts in this bay provide more hours with electricity for a similar price of bungalow ), so sleeping in a hot bungalow is not the real holiday-feeling!
The stuff, owners are not very friendly, a smile does cost extra?
Positive: tasty food, fresh green salads, the location of the restaurant is so beautiful.
Thailand here meens "back to the roots", good for some days, but don't expect too much.

After being helpfully guided to Plaa's by a large pig (amazing considering the route under the rocks and up the steep stairs!) we were shown to our bungalow, and the view took our breath away! The bungalows are basic, but they're clean, with a good bathroom, and comfy bed. It's the balcony and view that makes them special, looking out over the beautiful beach at Than Sadet. This is the place to come if you just want to chill out, lie on the beach and eat amazing Thai food. Plaa's food was consistently good, and after 3 weeks in Thailand we all decided it was the best of the trip! The other places on the beach are good too, if you want a change.
If you're looking for somewhere as a base to explore Koh Phangan this isn't really the place to be... the road is bad, and when it's been raining a lot, truly terrifying!! Taxis don't want to use it, so you'll struggle unless you have pre-booked transport though your accommodation. There is a daily taxi to Thong Sala for 200 baht per person (each way), which is timed to meet the boats.
We will definitely come back to Plaa's... the rest of Koh Phangan is so built up, it's amazing to find such an beautiful deserted paradise. Highly recommended!!!

Room Tip: Definitely ask for sea view... worth the extra couple of quid
