“Above and beyond expectations!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 December 2011

I generally avoid chain hotels, especially in places like Thailand where I want some culture and authenticity. However, because of a deal we had, we decided to check out the Le Meridien and wow, am I glad! Le Meridien really outdid themselves in Chiang Rai. This hotel is incredible! The property is far from town, but that didn't matter to us as we had rented motorcycles and could come and go as we pleased. First things first - the property is stunning as it is right on the river and architected in a very classy, Thai style. There are three infinity swimming pools, two restaurants, and a fabulous outdoor bar. Second, the service was outstanding! The hotel was not very busy so we were upgraded upon checkin. The entire staff bent over backwards to make our stay enjoyable the whole time! I generally don't do hotel spas, but this one was fabulous - the treatment rooms are small, private villas! I could go on and on about this hotel, but I won't. I will let you check it out for yourself!

We, my wife and I , often visit Chiang Rai, particularly when we have guests from overseas (we live in Chiang Mai, Thailand) and wish to show them the beauty of the North of Thailand. Each time we stay in this resort with our guests (friends) we are more than delighted to note the improvements in service and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the hotel and the area around it. If one wants to enjoy a holiday in a beautiful resort in a most interesting area (to mention only two attractions in the vicinity The White Temple and The Golden triangle), enjoy a first class friendly service and superb restaurants, I can wholeheartedly recommend this hotel.

I stayed with a friend for two nights at Le Meridien in early December as a long weekend break from work in Bangkok. The overall stay was very pleasant but not the luxury retreat we had anticipated. I booked a Deluxe River View Room which was spacious and quite nicely appointed but it lacked the quality and attention to detail one expects in 5-star properties. The bathroom fixtures were cheap and ill-fitting, while the supplied amenities were basic to say the least and were not replenished meaning that, with two of us staying in the room, shampoo, conditioner etc were gone by Day 2. More puzzlingly, our bathroom linen was not replaced either and we were forced to use damp towels on the second day. To top it off, the shower had chronic water pressure problems and the temperature would jump from cold to scalding and back again every few seconds. No great hardship, of course, but not exactly the sort of thing one expects from a property billed as a 5-star luxury hotel. In addition, while the overall hotel and grounds are wonderfully peaceful, the sound-proofing in our room left a bit to be desired. To wit, every time someone rang the doorbell on one of the adjacent rooms (which for some strange reason seemed to happen with surprising frequency) it would resonate so loudly into our room that the first few times it happened I answered the door thinking it was our bell ringing. One more slight complaint: we had booked a special Spa Promotion Package which included a daily complimentary Thai massage or spa treatment but the hotel spa was short-staffed both days and the only times available were either in the middle of the day when we were out touring or late at night. Consequently, we didn't get to avail ourselves of the Spa Package at all.

Still, the hotel is well positioned and the grounds are lovely. Furthermore, the staff are uniformly professional and the breakfast buffet is excellent. The hotel fitness room which we used on both days is also quite good, if a little small. I would certainly recommend Le Meridien as a nice place to stay in Chiang Rai but would caution anyone who goes expecting a truly top range 5 star experience...it's just not in that league.

Dear siamsoul

Thank you for posting a review about your recent visit to Le Meridien Chiang Rai Resort. I was disappointed to learn you felt we didn't offer a 5 star experience and have taken note of your comments on not having your bathroom amenities replenished. Please accept my apology as it is a daily standard to have this done. We do have an environmental policy in the resort whereby we only change linen if our guests indicate so by placing a card on their bed each morning. I'm unsure if this was done during your stay however I am following up both of these comments with our housekeeping teams to ensure our standards are maintained.

In addition, since your profile lists you as residing in Bangkok, when you're next in Chiang Rai please do reach out to me directly as I'd like to offer you the Spa treatment you were unable to experience whilst your were here. With 4 treatment rooms it can be difficult sometimes as most of our guests wish to take Spa treatments at very similar times, however I'm looking at ways now we can help including in room options. I'd love for you to still be able to experience us.

We've also identified the cause of water fluctuations and we're in the process of addressing it for good.

I'm pleased however you loved the grounds of the resort and rated both our service and location 5 out of 5. As mentioned please do let me know if you're back in Chiang Rai so I may meet you in person.

Best wishes for the festive season.

Justin

I've visited Chiang Rai and the surrounding many times, but this was my first stay at this hotel. It stands in about 10 acres of attractive, well maintained grounds with a lake and some very old trees alongside the Mae Kok River.
My Grande Deluxe room was very big and in an attractive modern style, with a large bathroom, big wetroom and a very sustantial balcony overlooking the pool and the river, but quite a long way from the lobby and the main restaurant. This was, however, offset by its close proximity to the Pool, Pool Bar and their premier (Italian) restaurant.
The bed was very comfortable and Room Service breakfast, which I ate on the balcony, arrived spot on time and exactly as I ordered it. All my other requests for service, such as laundry etc were dealt with very promptly and efficiently.
I did have a niggle about the water supply in the bathroom. The hot water pressure kept varying - most noticeably in the shower, where the temperature kept changing from comfortable to scalding.
I generally took my evening meals in Favola, the Italian restaurant. The food was very good , but the staff were so efficient and the service so good that I sometimes felt that I was being rushed in a` pleasant sort of way.
I found that the Pool was generally very quiet, but the towel and cold water service were good and food and drinks were available if I wanted them.
I tried the impressive Latitudes bar in the Lobby one evening - very good service and a generous Happy Hour.
Another little niggle. Every time a bill for food or drinks is presented for signature, it's accompanied by a satisfaction questionaire which the staff are very keen for you to complete. It gets a bit wearing!
All in all I thought it was a very good hotel staffed by (mostly young) pleasant, helpful, enthusiastic and efficient people.

Dear two trees

Thank you for taking the time to write about your recent visit to Le Meridien Chiang Rai Resort, what a refreshing read. I'm thrilled you were able to enjoy breakfast on your balcony, definitely a great way to start each day.

I realise you experienced fluctuations with water pressure during your visit, and I apologise. We've since identified the issues and worked on a number of solutions which to date have addressed the problem, so thank you for providing me with the feedback.

The team were very happy to hear of your comments, especially the Favola & Latitude teams. We look forward to having you back soon and wish you a happy new year.

Best wishes

I stayed at this resort for two nights. The property is beautiful. It's very spread out so finding your way around can be a challenge if you're directionally challenged, but there are lots of signs. The lobby is on the third floor and the breakfast dining room is on the first floor.

My room was really big! It came with a very comfortable bed (gotta love the Starwood mattresses!) and linens, a walk-in closet with robes and slippers, and a big bathroom with separate bathtub and shower stall. You get the usual toiletries and two complimentary bottles of water. The tv is big and reception is excellent. There's a good variety of channels including BBC, CNN, and HBO. I didn't eat dinner at the hotel, but there are a few choices including room service. The breakfast buffet was very good with plenty of fresh food, custom fresh smoothies, and Thai, Chinese, and American/Western favorites.

The hotel has free wifi in public areas, but if you have a room facing the pool then you can pick up a signal. You have to get a login code and password from the front desk for free wifi everyday. The pool area is beautiful with an infinity pool overlooking the river. If you don't want to eat at the hotel restaurants then the hotel offers free shuttle dropoff and pickup to the Chiang Rai night market. Alternatively, there are a few decent local restaurants (good eats for cheap) down the street. Walk out of the lobby and down the hill to the main road and turn right. Walk approximately 2-4 minutes and the restaurants are to your right.

OH...last thing. This property also has lots of geckos. You can see some during the day, but they mostly come out at night. If you're squeamish like me then make sure to enter and exit your room fast so they don't get a chance to creep in.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the pool in the Starwood Preferred wing so you can pick up the free wifi signa...

Dear i-gots-wanderlust

It is great news that you found your stay with us a pleasant one! This is truly music to our ears. We take great pride in knowing we are doing it right and will continue to provide such uncompromising service to our guests.

I do note your comment about geckos, as our resort is open environment so it's easy to find them around even we try our best to control them. However, some of our guests like to see them because the geckos make the guest feel like they are staying close to the natural.

Should your future travels bring you back to Chiang Rai, feel free to contact me directly - I will personally ensure that your next stay with us will be a most enjoyable and comfortable one.

The rooms are large and clean. Designed in more conemporary style Lanna architecture. The layout is fairly good at the river. Breakfast is quite good as well as Favola, the Itialian restaurant. The staff is outstanding and very polite as expected from a five star. The location is a bit away from the town. Nothing else is in the immediate vacinity, although the hotels does provide a limited shuttle into the town, mall as well as a museum(use room key to visit the museum free). Overall a nice stay.

A really good hotel just away from the bustle of the town but keeping its proximity whilst providing the tranquillity of the river . the internet needs up grading. it works but does not have enough capacity/band width. we also experienced this in the Chedi in Chiang mai, another great hotel so it may be a northern Thailand problem. the rooms large and spacious, some small issues with the floor being cleaned but nothing too significant. the service and attention of the staff when requested for assistance was first rate.

Room Tip: upper floor that is 3 or 4 with river view. otherwise its a big hotel complex and you might get hid...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The resort occupies an idyllic 26-rai site directly on the banks of the Mae Kok River, moments from Chiang Rai town and a one hour drive from the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge. The resort is set at the heart of beautiful landscaped gardens complete with a tranquil man-made lake and two majestic 100-year-old rain trees. Surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery, the neighbouring community is a jewel waiting to be explored. Nearby attractions include Rai Mae Fah Luang, Le Méridien's chosen UnLock Art site, and Oub Kham Museum which houses a collection of objects from the ancient Lanna kingdom, Myanmar, southwest China, and Vietnam. Nearby attractions include Wat Phra Kaew, the temple that once housed the Emerald Buddha, and the Hill Tribe Education Centre with its fascinating display of tribal artefacts and handicrafts. Boat trips along the Mae Kong River are available from the town of Chiang Khong, with stops along the way at villages of interest. Ethnic groups living in the province include Karen, Lisu, Lahu, Akha, Meo, and Yao, and it is possible to arrange treks into the hill tribe villages with experienced local guides. Mae Sai is 62 kilometres north of Chiang Rai and makes for an interesting day trip. This busy trading post borders Myanmar, and it is possible to cross the bridge to visit the bustling market in Tha Khi Lek. Phu Chi Fa is a spectacular viewpoint. The impressive views are best enjoyed early in the morning, particularly in the cool season when mist covers the valley floor. A highlight to any trip to Chiang Rai is a visit to the Doi Tung Development Project. Started as a royal initiative to help eradicate opium supply, drug use, and rural poverty, the project offers villagers with a practical and sustainable alternative. The project focuses on development, education, training, humanitarian activities, environmental conservation, agriculture, and the production of quality crafts. At the summit of Doi Tung, visitors can visit Phra That Doi Tung, a chedi constructed in 911 A.D and one of the oldest and most sacred sites in northern Thailand. The chedi is said to contain the collarbone of Buddha. Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort, Thailand is located close to the town centre and a short drive from Chiang Rai Airport. ... more   less
