“lonely planet didnt tell the whole story”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

Lonely planet had the red rose as their best pick. It is a theme hotel where each room has a disney type theme. My room as the star wars room complete with the automatic opening door in the foyer and backlit star scenes on the walls and the mirrored shower room. what they didn't say is that it is now chaing Mai's famous brothel. We arrived midday little sign of life and it was amusing to my two children who picked a thai boxing theme room with the bed in a boxing ring complete with punching bags and gloves. The supply of condom and mirrored ceiling should have been a hint but after we had market shopped and had dinner we retunred to find the bar area really moving along with lots of local men and friendly girls. It was an interesting experience and i suspect well cleaned as we suspected the whole room would glow under the black light in my room.. but it didn't which was a relief. Enjoy but be aware. My two sons knocked back the two for one price a visitor offered them late in the evening so when you travel it can be an adventure.

Room Tip: have a look at them all its an adventure

Arrived in Chiang Rai yesterday, checked into the Wiang Inn, checked out the next day. Very old and shabby. The reception is nice but rooms are dated and definatley not worth the money (rubbish breakfast too!!)

We moved to the Red Rose this morning, and love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have a choice of rooms from 350 baht up to 3,500. We went for 1000 baht, room 207. Can't quite believe it. We have two bathrooms, a Jaquzzi bath, steam room, seperate living room. It's a bit far out of town but very easy to rent a moped of jump in a tuk tuk. i wanna take a look at the more expensive rooms and see what they are like.

Nice thai food market very close as is 7\11 (know they are a monopoly but soooooo covienient)

Anyway take my word for it, you wont be dissapointed. I have read other reviews that are negative. Maybe not to their taste.

We found this hotel on our lonely planet guide (rated with a heart), we thought it could be fun indeed... But unlike the 4 previous reviews of this hotel, we did not have the chance to stay in a "fancy disney room" and got instead some kind of old fashion classic room. Wallpaper from the 70's, very dark room since there are no windows, an old smell of tabaco.
Everything was clean though : bathrooms, sheets etc...
Staff's level of english was poor so it was hard to be understood, and unlike another reviewer I didn't think they were very friendly. Not that they were unpleasant, just that we hardly met them.
Breakfast served in the room was ok (only coffee, no tea).
Last, but not least, we stayed there on a Wednesday night, and it WAS karaoke night also, until past 1 am, and we got the feeling that it was indeed some kind of motel, made for late night newly lover, or one-night stand...
Definitly not advisable as far as I am concerned!

nb : we paid our room 1250 THB / 31€

This is defenitely one of the wackiest places to stay in Chiang Rai. Rooms look like youre in the middle of disneyland. We stayed at the "starwars room". This room was spacious, huge shower with mirrors everywhere. The only problem in the starwars room was the automatic door from the hallway to the bedroom. At night it spontaniously opens en closes wich makes a lot of noise. Our tip is leave the light on in the hall, so the sensor won't get crazy!
You can just park the car in front of your room.
The hotel is just out of town, but close enough to walk to the nightmarket and a couple of restaurants & bars.

So our conclusion is if you have kids this is a defenite must see! (we paid 500 baht for 1 night in low-season)

This hotel is just one of a kind! We had been reading about it online (after seeing the recommondation in Lonely Planet) - but it just something you have to see to believe.

We had a "cartoon room" - slept in a car. Room was big and clean. A bit dark, though. People who worked there were friendly and helpful. Breakfast, served in the room, was okay.

Safe to bring children, any sex related thing we saw was the condom machine.

It was a bit far from the centre, but the staff called tuktuks for us when we were going out.

This is by far the funkiest hotel I have ever stayed in. Each room has a theme - such as Star Wars, Thai Boxing, Aladdin, Tarzan, Mickey Mouse, Spa, Cars, etc. Rooms start at 350 baht/night with many interesting rooms at 500 baht/night. The most expensive room was 3,800 baht/night, complete with a 2-story room and spa inside your room. All of the rooms were clean, and the 500 baht/night rooms are a great value for the city of Chiang Rai. I have two caveats: on Friday and Saturday nights, this hotel does have a karaoke lounge and caters to folks who are seeking a room with young ladies after their whiskey and karaoke (although the rooms far from the lounge were quiet), and the hotel is located across from the old airport, a little south of town. If you do not have your own vehicle, you'd have to take "song taews" or tuk-tuks from to and from the "downtown" area. However, with that said, our kids LOVED the Thai boxing room (and they are girls, too!). On a quiet weekday night, this hotel is great for families with kids or for anyone with a sense of humor!
