I found Hua Hin underwhelming, in spite of its royal palace and its luxurious condominiums. Some of the locals are "on the make" and too pushy for my liking with hiking of prices and hassle from traders down on the beach.
My room at the Peony was pleasant enough with a nice balcony overlooking the pool. The bathroom was clean and spacious with fresh towels both days I was there. When I checked out, the reception lady asked if I had had anything from the minibar - but there was nothing in my fridge apart from the customary bottles of mineral water. There was no breakfast service available and they couldn't even make us a cup of coffee when requested to do so which is rather pathetic considering the number of staff members on duty.
The saltwater pool was clean and refreshing but there were only seven sunbeds available even though the hotel has forty rooms. My main complaint concerns the several seedy European men who were staying in the hotel with sexploited Thai bar girls young enough to be their daughters. A suspicious previous reviewer (from Hua Hin!) has denied that this stomach churning immorality has seeped into the Peony but I can confirm that it has. It 's one thing having a pimps approaching you in the street to ask .but to put up with such indecency in a hotel where you're paying 1000 baht a night for a room - without breakfast - is just not on.
