Peony Hotel
Ranked #74 of 144 Hotels in Hua Hin
Reviewed 2 August 2014

The Peony Hotel is located on a relatively quiet street in Hua Hin. The rooms are nice...for Thailand. You have to keep your hotel room key in a slot near the door in order for electricity to flow into the room. This is the only way for the air conditioning to work and also to see what you are doing in the bathroom. Otherwise, the rooms are very well lit during the day, and overlook the pool.

My wife and I got a king bedroom on the second floor, this was actually two smaller beds pushed together. The air conditioning works well when it is on. The bathroom is small, and there is a vent that faces out to the corridor. So it is not uncommon to hear people's conversations and the pedestrian traffic while you are in the bathroom. It can almost feel like these is no privacy at all.

Water pressure is good and the toilets flush well. But when you use the shower, water gets everywhere. Make sure you keep your dry clothes and sandals/shoes away from the shower. The fridge is big and can accommodate many beverages and items. There are a couple of small waters in there but the hotel charges you for them. There is a water cooler on the first floor, just before the front desk, which is free and available to guests of the hotel.

The breakfast was complimentary and it was impressive. I had been living in Bangkok for two weeks and this was the most western breakfast I had enjoyed thus far. Bacon was chewy, eggs were friend to the right consistency and my wife said the potatoes were pretty tasty. Coffee, as you may now, leaves something to be desired in Thailand. I am shocked at how most everything is instant. But the coffee machine for the hotel is pretty good.

The pool is big and good for swimming or just getting wet. All in all, the Peony Hotel is a good value for the money. You are about a ten minute walk from the beach. The water in Hua Hin leaves something to be desired. You will not get crystal clear waters here, too close to Bangkok. You won't even see the bottom of the sand in 12 inches of water. And little fish may nibble on you. Nothing serious, it is just a bit odd and strange when you are wading into the water.

I would stay here again but I probably won't because Hua Hin, as a town, leaves a little something to be desired. There are much better beaches and towns if you are willing to lay out the money to fly/go further. Getting to and from Hua Hin from Bnagkok was a real pain. The traffic was terrible. It was supposed to be a two hour trip but it turned into four! Tread lightly fellow travellers.

Found this hotel walking down the street and it had the best rooms at the best price so I took it. The bed was comfortable and the air-conditioning worked well. The shower was adequate and rooms were clean. Breakfast was included and was surprisingly good food with great variety. I think this hotel has a bit of western management to help.

Negative points are there is no lift so it is a walk up. I also noticed algae in the swimming pool which stopped me swimming.

Other than that I thought this was a good hotel for the money.

We were looking for a decent hotel that didnt cost the earth and we found it in the Peony. Rooms are light with lovely balconys. Location is excellent as everywhere is within easy walking distance. Their buffet breakfast is the best we have had in Asia. Pool is lovely and never seems to get that busy. Staff are really friendly. Lovely bakery on the property. The only things that need changing are some decent shower heads would be great and tea and coffee making facilities would be a real bonus.

The rooms are not spectacular, but they are clean. The staff is amazing and the food is decent. For the price of this hotel, you can't beat it for the location, walking distance to beach and to some excellent restaurants. The pool is clean. This is a good find in Hua Hin...

stayed nov.2013.cheaper than many in resort, but excellent location, only being minutes from central area.night markets within short walking and beach similarly positioned.many bar and restaurants also nearby.rooms were very adequate, with the usual hard mattress.bathroom was very tired and needed modernisation/repairs,but otherwise o/k.pool was good and clean.breakfast was good ,with as much as you want bacon and sausages are available, but they are not kept hot--i presume this is only the british way--but not a problem.it must be the only place you can be presented with a multitude of different breads and pastries every morning--courtesy of the on-site bakery.--delicious!!they have small bar at front and this can be a welcome break from the noisy and busy main area.all staff are pleasant and helpful.i would not hesitate to stop here again.--so much so that i am going to book for next november.highly recommended.

Peony Hotel is situated in a side street one road away from the beach. The busy bars, cafes and restaurants are only a few minutes walk away but the hotel remains quiet at night with no disturbance from its neighbours. My husband and I found it whilst on a recce for our next stay in Hua Hin.

RECEPTION, We were impressed with front of house. All of the ladies who manned the desk at different times of the day, we found to be absolutely charming at all times. Our questions were answered and they couldn't do enough to help anyone who had questions or queries.

POOL,The European guy who was cleaning the pool and surrounding areas did his job admirably. A dozen or so comfortable beds together with umbrellas was adequate. Each day towels were available at the entrance of the pool, two colours, one for the pool and another colour should guests' wish to take them to the beach which was a great idea.

ROOM, a good size. Spacious wardrobe/drawer space held all our belongings. We had a large fridge in the room which held beer/soft drinks and these were available for reasonable prices, and topped up daily. There was also space for our own items which we made full use of. A king bed was fairly hard, this wasn't a problem for us because we like it that way. Bedding changed frequently and the room serviced daily. Very quiet, efficient A/C. Small flat screen TV with cable should we have had the inclination to stay in and watch television! Two bottles of mineral water per day complimentary. We had no complaints regarding the cleanliness here. Large doors opening onto a balcony overlooking the pool. Two chairs so we could sit with a beer in the evenings!

BATHROOM, This is an area that could probably do with a spot of re-furbishing. The ceiling showed evidence of more than enough leaks from the room above. The sink water was very slow to drain away, could probably benefit from some maintenance on the 'u' bend trap. A new white shower curtain was a good touch. I do hate it when these curtains are old and brittle from so much soap and use. An efficient power shower with a great shower head was excellent but a disgusting toilet brush beside the WC was not!

THE HOTEL, does not object to guests' bringing other guests' into rooms. We did see single European/American males entertaining Thai ladies from time to time, but to be honest it did not cause us any disturbance and mostly went un-noticed.

OVERALL, We stayed here 12 nights or so and loved it. It was with reluctance that we left Hua Hin and Thailand. Would we go back to this property - absolutely yes!

We booked 6 ground floor rooms back in January when we inspected the hotel. The room location and swimming pool were what we were looking for as we were travelling with family and friends. It's across the road from the Centara and has a lot of places around for breakfast. When we were there a new restaurant and bakery were in the throws of being constructed.
Front bar run by Lek is very welcoming and a good opportunity to meet others staying at the Peony. The only thing I can say is the housekeeping to the bathrooms in each room really let the place down. There are no coffee or tea facilities in your room so you will need to take your own. There is an Urn underneath the fish tanks at the corridor to the bottom floor rooms if needed.
