The Peony Hotel is located on a relatively quiet street in Hua Hin. The rooms are nice...for Thailand. You have to keep your hotel room key in a slot near the door in order for electricity to flow into the room. This is the only way for the air conditioning to work and also to see what you are doing in the bathroom. Otherwise, the rooms are very well lit during the day, and overlook the pool.
My wife and I got a king bedroom on the second floor, this was actually two smaller beds pushed together. The air conditioning works well when it is on. The bathroom is small, and there is a vent that faces out to the corridor. So it is not uncommon to hear people's conversations and the pedestrian traffic while you are in the bathroom. It can almost feel like these is no privacy at all.
Water pressure is good and the toilets flush well. But when you use the shower, water gets everywhere. Make sure you keep your dry clothes and sandals/shoes away from the shower. The fridge is big and can accommodate many beverages and items. There are a couple of small waters in there but the hotel charges you for them. There is a water cooler on the first floor, just before the front desk, which is free and available to guests of the hotel.
The breakfast was complimentary and it was impressive. I had been living in Bangkok for two weeks and this was the most western breakfast I had enjoyed thus far. Bacon was chewy, eggs were friend to the right consistency and my wife said the potatoes were pretty tasty. Coffee, as you may now, leaves something to be desired in Thailand. I am shocked at how most everything is instant. But the coffee machine for the hotel is pretty good.
The pool is big and good for swimming or just getting wet. All in all, the Peony Hotel is a good value for the money. You are about a ten minute walk from the beach. The water in Hua Hin leaves something to be desired. You will not get crystal clear waters here, too close to Bangkok. You won't even see the bottom of the sand in 12 inches of water. And little fish may nibble on you. Nothing serious, it is just a bit odd and strange when you are wading into the water.
I would stay here again but I probably won't because Hua Hin, as a town, leaves a little something to be desired. There are much better beaches and towns if you are willing to lay out the money to fly/go further. Getting to and from Hua Hin from Bnagkok was a real pain. The traffic was terrible. It was supposed to be a two hour trip but it turned into four! Tread lightly fellow travellers.
