“Disappointing!”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

We chose this hotel based on the fabulous reviews we had seen on Tripadvisor, but were disappointed with certain aspects of the hotel. On the positive side it is in a fairly good location in Hua Hin, close to a number of good restaurants in Soi 94 and with easy access to the centre of town. The room we had was very spacious and comfortable, and although it overlooked the railway we found it reasonably quiet. We were not, however, impressed with the pool area however: the colour of the pool was very dubious and I would certainly not have liked to ingest the water in it. We are also surprised about the rave reviews about the friendliness of the owner since, as far as we were concerned, he seemed barely able to bring himself to say hello to us. His wife was a little more friendly and helpful. We didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food. I personally would not stay at this hotel again, although it obviously suits a lot of people judging by the favourable reviews I have seen.

We stayed at the Donkey's Rest for 3 weeks Jan - Feb & all had a brilliant time. Having stayed in Hua Hin on 7 previous occasions (ranging from newly built condos to basic B & B's), this place has without doubt the best pool area & was one of the reasons we plumped for it.
We were also very pleasantly surprised by the amount of lovely restaurants & bars there were on Soi 94 & must thank our fellow guest Dora for tipping us off about the best ones to try.
We stayed in a superior family room, which was more than spacious enough to accommodate 3 females & their enormous suitcases full of clothes / shoes / toiletries. It comprised a large bedroom with air con, large sofa, wardrobe, dressing table & TV plus another big room with floor standing fan, full size fridge, storage cupboards & kettle. The bathroom had a pleasingly powerful shower, basin, mirror & WC.
Although our bedroom looked out onto the rail tracks on the opposite side of the road we never had a problem with noise (& I'm a very light sleeper).
Downstairs there was a large bar area, huge TV screen + a vast collection of books to borrow. We really enjoyed chatting to some of our fellow guests including Dora (Scotland), Keith (Exmouth) & Barry (Guernsey).
The pool area really did exceed expectations - there were only 2 days when one of us had to wait 10 minutes or so to bag a sunbed (usually we could take our pick). There were friendly people of all nationalities using the facilities & the whole pool area caught the sun all day (with umbrellas & open sided bamboo shelters available, when the mid 30 temperatures got too much)
We often had lunch there & it was always tasty & very reasonably priced. The wine came in massive glasses too !
As for eating out, we were positively spoiled for choice on Soi 94. There were 2 bakeries which did great breakfasts (fry ups / cereal / yogurt / fresh fruit etc etc) & lots of great restaurants to eat in at night. We particularly loved the recently opened Eat @ Hua Hin but you needed to book if you wanted to eat early (we went around 8pm & usually got a table within 5 - 10 minutes). Lucianos Pizza place was also great.
On past visits to Hua Hin we've tended to eat at restaurants in the centre (Ketsarin on the piers is still a favourite)...but the high quality (& much cheaper prices) of the places on Soi 94 meant we usually ate around there & then caught a 100 baht tuk tuk or 10 baht bus to the centre.
We spent a few nights drinking at The Happy Bar and LanLa Bar on Soi 94 & were made to feel extremely welcome at both. The rest of the time, we had great fun at The King Bar on Soi Bintabaht, run by Billy (Scouser) & his lovely wife Goy. We also enjoyed the The Moon Light Bar (live rock band), Mai Tai & Blackout Bars.
Upon rolling back to the Donkey's Rest at 2 - 3 am, we just headed round to the back entrance, through the shuttered gate & straight up the stairs to our room. Andy has CCTV cameras installed & we always felt it was a very safe environment.
In conclusion, we had a brilliant time whilst staying there & would have no hesitation in heading back next year.

I stayed 10 weeks, this was my 4th yearly visit, I am a young at heart 66 year old woman and feel completely safe staying here. Big rooms, aircon and fridges in rooms, fresh clean sheets and laundry all done in-house. Big pool directly behind hotel. Great location just off Soi 94 which has all types of restuarants, 7-11 store, massage parlours at hand. A short stroll to market village and the 10 baht bus into heart of town or 100baht on a tuk-tuk. Andy and Duong are really helpful and their two little girls are adorable. Bar area gives you an opportunity to chat with other guests (all nationalities) and you meet some great characters. Already looking for flights for next year and will be staying for 4 months, December through March, can't wait.

Room Tip: Room 1 has doors out onto the deck area but all rooms are large.

Just returned from a great stay at the donkeys rest. Great food, spacious accommodation, excellent company, what more can I say!
The hotel is well situated ,surrounded by great value restaurants serving Thai and western food. Its very close to the air conditioned market village and also the Grand night bazaar. There are regular 10 baht buses into the centre if its too hot to walk.
Nothing is too much trouble for Andy. He is very knowledgeable and was happy to make calls for us during our stay, He also organizes fishing trips and is a great story teller ( as are all fishermen!!)
His wife is a lovely cook. The Thai dishes are so tasty. She even cooked us spareribs ,roast potatoes and gravy, such a nice change and so delicious.
The bar is well stocked with a nice friendly atmosphere. The mini bar in the bedrooms are actually charged at supermarket prices and free coffee and water are provided.
We are already planning our next holiday there with family and children. Its a very child friendly place. The owners have two lovely girls so they know what it takes to make a great family holiday.
Can't wait to get back there!!

We originally stayed at The Donkeys Rest for 4nights however extended our visit by another 3!

The location is great, close to some really yummy restaurants ( friendly kitchen-thai & the S&S curry house) and is a five minute walk to the beach. The pool area is great to just relax and hang out with gym facilities and a good restaurant.

The owners Andy & Doung make this hotel, we love Andy!!! He was so helpful with any questions that we had. My friend got a tattoo and not only did he give advice he also came with us for moral support. We stayed up in the bar having such a laugh and drinks with the owners, they are fab! The bar area at night is not noisy at all & was always finished by the latest 12am.

The rooms were spacious, clean and had aircon. Literally just has what you need in a room and was cleaned daily. No complaints at all..

The area of Hua hin itself is a more mature crowd, not a backpackers vibe but it was perfect for what we needed at the time of our travels.

I would 100% recommend the donkeys rest!
