“Relaxing and refreshing place ........”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2013

Having spent two nights in Bangkok on arrival from UK, we travelled on to Anantara Resort Spa Hua Hin in a private taxi (Oriental Escapes Taxi Service) on 28th April 2013 as part of our 13 nights stay in Thailand.
We had reserved a Premium Sea View for our 8 night’s stay which turned out to be the best option. The room was on 2nd floor (UK 1st floor) and right on the seafront with beautiful tropical plants and trees around. The best feature of this room is the balcony. On the balcony was a patio table with two chairs and a lounger bed. You don’t really need to venture out to get a sun bed on the beach because the lounger bed on our private balcony was better than being on the sun beds on the beach – well sprung and with plenty of cushions. One could observe other guests looking up at us (somewhat enviously?) as they went around placing towels on sun beds early in the morning in order to reserve them.
The gardens are a real treat to walk around – all those tropical flowers, bushes and trees being lovely cared for by the squad of gardeners. The pool is nice and clean and appears to be well maintained. There are sun beds and umbrellas (see photos attached).
The staff are very pleasant and helpful – service with a smile! There is a good select of food and beverage and the prices reflect the hotel’s star rating.
Wish we had stayed on instead of returning to Bangkok for a further two nights stay before returning home to UK>

Room Tip: Go for seaview rooms.

I went Anantara Spa for one treatment while I stayed at another hotel.
The Anantara Spa kindly arranged a pick-up/drop-off between two facilities for us (4 pax). Nice welcome at the spa reception and the treatment (60 minutes of signature massage) was very very good. I think I had a very experienced therapist - she had magic hands! It was just another level and I was happy to pay for the quality & service.

It was thought to give this Anantara an overall rating. Though I have it a 4 "very good" rating, I actually wanted to give it a 3.5 stars so I'll have to break it down by categories:

Hotel Grounds: 4 stars
As typical to the Anantara brand, expect a lush and relaxing setting, lovely Thai decorative touches like orchids that grow out of trees , statues of elephants and the like and greenery galore. I didn't give it 5 stars because it seemed that many parts of the hotel were under a constant state of renovation or repair. And other parts looked down right abandoned with several pieces of in room furniture strewn about outside of rooms and I'm hallways, especially around the tucked away lagoon room area.

Hotel Staff: most, 4 stars; lobby check-in: 3 stars
I will give the beach bar and beach restaurant staff a solid 5 stars. They were always great. However the 3 stars will have to go to the lobby and check-in counter staff, especially the female manager who was on site. Though smiling, when we asked if we could change rooms because of the faulty a/c unit that leaked, she looked positively put out, then simply informed us that so sorry, the hotel is fully booked. Instead of then offering to help us, I had to ask for an engineer to fix the a/c myself. Even that request made her seem put out. I understand that it was a very busy time of day but if its too busy then perhaps the hotel needs to either hire more apt management and staff or not fully book their rooms u to they can accommodate it. I will emphasize again that the restaurant, bar and pool staff were great.

Atmosphere: 3.5 stars
I think perhaps the hotel is putting profit ahead of its capabilities or service. The one rather small pool (for the size of the hotel) was unbearably crowded with kids and everyone else. Putting the kids pool area right next to the swim-up bar is just a bad idea. Also, the pool was warmer than bath water! Not very refreshing at all. We had a beach view room which was nice. Though I am confused as to why the hotel decided to put their shampoo/body wash/conditioner/lotions into little ceramic jars that you would have to shake and shake to pour out....which just invites breakage. Also, the bath tub was consistently clogged. I will give the cleaning staff 4 stars for doing a good job cleaning the rooms regularly.

Facilities: 3.5 stars
Restaurants are relatively pricey but food is good. The gym is only ok (small and located way off the main property). The spa is 2 stars.... THB 1,500 for a foot massage!!!!! You have got to be kidding....we got an amazing 60 min foot massage for THB 300 in town. The highlight is the beach bar and its happy hour drinks...Esp the Thai Lemongrass Margarita which was delicious.

We arrived at the Anantara after a 3 day stay in Bangkok and wow what a place, upon arrival we were handed two very refreshing drinks and asked to take a seat whilst they checked us in, we did have a problem in the fact that we needed to have a credit card with us to put against the room and as we do not travel with one this did cause a delay with the checking in process, however i do not hold the hotel responsible for this and they were very accommodating. We were then told our room was not quite ready and to feel free to have a wander, after about 5 minutes a member of staff came to find us to show us to our room. We had a ground floor sea view room which was stunning to say the least. the room was a good size and for those that have said that they were a little small - really? how much space do you need? the room was perfect, the bed comfortable and the bath big enough for two.

The location was great - it was not to far from town but you also felt that you were well away from it. and at 50 Baht each for the shuttle bus getting into town was a doddle.

the grounds were immaculate and beautiful. the pool was never crowded and there was always plenty of sunbeds (with or without shade).

The staff were very helpful and friendly, but two members stood out from the rest; Chonthicha at the Lay Nam pool bar was very friendly and always had a welcoming and warm smile, then there was Nopporn - my husband had Muay Thai lessons with him every morning and loved every second of it, Nopporn again was friendly and helpful and my husband cannot speak highly enough of him, his training techniques and the levels to which he pushed him. thank you to all of the staff but especially to Chonthicha and Nopporn, you helped turn a great holiday into to something personal and very memorable.

yes the resort had its negatives (expensive drinks and food but this is a hotel so is to be expected) like everything in life, but perfection is not possible in this day and age as what is perfect for one may only be satisfactory for another, our standards are very high but i think that when you go to another country you need to do so with both an open mind and zero expectations.

we are already looking at returning to Hua Hin next year and the lasting memories that we have from the Anantara mean that we will more than likely return.

We have travelled to Thailand many times over the past 30 years and sadly noticed that as tourism increases the authenticity of the country decreases. We chose Hua Hin in the hope it would remind us of the Thailand we visited many years ago. Unfortunately whilst Hua HIn isn't as commercial as the other Islands it didn't meet our expectations, we were expecting a small quiet town with a reasonable selection of bars and restaurants what we found was a busier town with the usual selection of "girly bars" admittingly not on the same scale as for eg: Phuket, Samui etc... the locals are very friendly.

After careful research we chose the Ananatara as we did not want to be in the centre of town, it also had great reviews. Perhaps we have been spolit in the past but our feeling was this is not a 5 star resort, we stayed in the garden room which was incredibly dark, the bathroom was so dingy looking and small (difficult to fit more than one person at a time). I'm sure the lagoon rooms are stunning however whilst there are always different tiers of accomodation at most hotels the general star classification should apply to the whole area not the private lagoon area. This was more like lagoon area 6 star less expensive rooms 3 star. The pool area was very tired looking, furniture worn, service average. The grounds however are stunning anf typically Thai, beautiful in the evening.
If you are looking for a real holiday feel ie: turquioise sea and sugar sand this is not the place for you. Also if you enjoy a stroll out in the evening for dinner, again this is not for you as it's impossible to walk into town. the road outside is like a motorway. There are a couple or reataurants nearby although not to our taste - a little like theme park eateries.

We live in Bangkok and it is perfect to go on the weekend to Hua Hin to disconnect from a busy week. Anantara is the key for that. The hotel lagoon, the green gardens and the breeze of the sea makes our weekend a memorable one.
We love staying here. Great food and staff! always perfect. Visit their spa page and see the pictures....it is a must see!
