“Friendly welcoming staff but..”
Reviewed 15 January 2013

Beautifully presented place with very modern styles. Did not stay here but had evening meal which was good but nothing special. Returned for Breakfast buffet but this was very poor with all dishes being only just warm rather than heated properly. Also very limited selection but then again one has to take in the size of the establishment. Breakfast buffet was not worth it and Coffee was terrible.

Room Tip: Did not sleep here..could not remove my rating...quiet location so should be fine.

Chalay Monta is a relatively new hotel pitching itself as 'design' at the southernmost end of Hua Hin beach, at Takiab below the rock headland. At US $87 a night for a double/king room, breakfast included, it was a decent choice for a getaway, but would be far for anyone keen to get to the night market or other central Hua Hin activities regularly.

The rooms were spacious and clean, while the front desk and restaurant seemed more eager than expert. Staff pounced to clear, but after breakfast at this small property, seemed to have little to do, with two or three hanging around the restaurant and another few at the front desk through most of the day. With this much staff with time on their hands, the management could make this hotel really special. Reassign these folks to be personal concierges to a few rooms each, on hand to provide the same attention -- pool towels, fresh bottles of water, dinner reservations, turndown service -- but in a direct relationship to individual guests.

Another way to burnish the property would be to offer a regular shuttle, even once in the morning and once in the evening, to central Hua Hin locations. Tourist prices for taxis and pedicabs -- even more inflated if you have the hotel call one for you -- and the distances to walk kept us close to Takiab. (Hua Hin is one long strip stretching 10 kilometers along the coast.) Fine for the long weekend, but a hurdle for anyone looking to stay longer.

However, there is enough nearby to keep you fed and going without having to rely overmuch on the hotel. Decent wifi, water and juice came with the rooms. Within a block or two, there is a convenience store, laundries, massage/hair salon offerings and a few eating options, including an open-air food court across the main road from the Sea Horse resort. Tokens purchasable at a central desk could be used at stalls for crispy shrimp fritters, roast fish, curries, fruit shakes and more. We got some takeaway here but only saw a table or two ever eating at lunch or dinnertime.

A short walk in the other direction gets you to Takiab beach, a 5-kilometer stretch that is if anything more quiet than Hua Hin beach. There are a couple of vendors offering pony or banana boat rides and once, popsicles. But you will largely be left alone and are likely to have a long run of beach to yourself. Dense taupe sand is flat with a very long runout and faint waves, making it good for children (just watch out for jellyfish).

Set back from the water, a strip of 8 or 10 seafood shacks offer lounge chairs, some open-air massages, and of course food. The signage here is all Thai, so it may be hard to pick out Sopa somewhere in the middle, but it is the one that will be crowded every night. Squid, shrimp and clams cooked with garlic and chilis are very good, while most Thai tables seem to order a sour soup and a fried whole fish, too. Crabs, while not as small as the thousands of hermits you'll see scurrying across the tideline, are still quite scrawny. So unless you are a dedicated picker and a crab fanatic, stick with more accessible shellfish.

Hua Hin itself is reachable by train or bus from Bangkok, a route that seems to take 2 to 6 hours depending on events. When we were there in May 2012, it was predominantly Thais, a lot of families and very low-key. If bar districts and thrill rides are your thing, Hua Hin isn't. If a quiet beach and decent seafood within an easy road shot of Bangkok are, give it a try.

Room Tip: Pool rooms on the ground floor have direct pool access, but also mean anyone in the pool sees right...
