“Fantastic Service, Great Price”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

i have only visited this restaurant once with my thai girlfriend, but the owner came to greet us and made sure our order was ok. the burger was great and although i regret i couldnt finish it, the staff packed the rest of the burger away for me to take home.

the burger tasted delicious, the 1L coke glass might of been overkill but it was nice that it was available.

hope to visit again soon.

“When I finally realized it was open it didn't suit my taste. 2.5”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

I lived in Hua Hin for 2-years, just a couple blocks away from XXL in fact. I remember driving slowly by several times looking carefully at it because it was so dark I could not tell if they were open. It took me 1.5-years to realize they were open regularly. They are on a dark corner, even in the day time, so it is hard to see. They could easily fix the visibility problem with an LED "OPEN" sign in the window facing traffic or something but, despite the staff confirming several complaints about this issue, it was the same when I left. I understand also that the owner(s) had a row with the cops and were hassled about the location of their lighted sign that goes near the street. Only reason I can imagine is not wanting to pay the cops bribe(s). I may be wrong but there is a reason because every other business in Hua Hin has their signs jammed out right next to the road, blocking the sidewalks / footpaths. The cops in HH are amenable but you have to play their game if you want to do business there, especially if you ever want their help. They probably do lean on (white) foreign owned businesses harder but know not to kill geese that lay valuable eggs.

Another issue is the hours they choose to be open / closed. I had looked for them a few times in the evening but they close a bit earlier and open a bit later than most restaurants open for lunch and dinner so that is an inconvenience. I missed them a couple times due to this. OK, owner's choice about hours and, I wouldn't let it affect the rating, but you really arrange your schedule around your staff's convenience rather than the other way around? (from owner replies to older reviews here on TA that mention the open/close hours)

Anyways, I'm American and when I finally ate there the first time I had ribs and a Cesar salad. I was happy the dressing was home made and on that day it had some kick (anchovy) and seasoning to it. Very hard to find real Cesar dressing here in Thailand. They choose to do the art thing here though and leave the Romain lettuce whole / uncut and I personally don't like that. Also, the portion sizes here are supposed to be large (XXL) but when you lay out a salad this way it's just 5 - 6 pieces of Romain so the amount of salad actually on the plate, despite it covering a lot of surface area, is small. I enjoyed the ribs and would say they are a good value but I wasn't impressed with the house sauce or the other sauce options. Average BBQ.

Next time back I had a burger. I know they are famous for their huge burger so I had high expectations for a normal size one but, I was disappointed. 2 issues here:
1. The seasoning they mix with the beef is not to my liking. I read the owner's reply to another TA review here about them working on it to get it they way they wanted it when they opened so, I guess it's just a different taste thing. It wasn't bad, good quality ingredients, but I didn't care for the taste. YMMV.
2. I like a juicy burger and this one was not. It was dry, very dry. I examined it closely and they are using some binder & filler but, it's not only about that I think... I hope. They must be using lean beef and while I appreciate the health benefits of lean meat I rarely eat red meat so when I do I expect to enjoy it in all its fatty goodness. At least give people the option. Maybe it was a batch of ground beef mixed wrong or a one off (I was the only customer while I was there this time) but it turned me off from giving the burger another try.

I went back 2 more times and had pretty similar experiences. Didn't get a burger again but was OK with what I had. The last visit though I had another Cesar salad and this time the dressing was breaking, had *no* seasoning and the Romain was swimming in it. I'm a Caesar connoisseur and this can be one of the best in Thailand so I was very disappointed.

I don't know if this is the owners' main source of income. It seems like the playground / idea of someone who doesn't need to keep up on the details after getting it going to be honest because, the potential for 5 stars is all there waiting to be realized. Especially on the side of the palace in Hua Hin that XXL is on, there are a lot of expats who do not want to fight the traffic into downtown HH to get a tasty bite at 9:00. I'm rating it 3 because I think 2 is too low but it deserves 2.5.

Finally, please don't bring those big dorky menus to my table. Cute idea but it doesn't work. You could get over-sized menus that are manageable or, if you like the billboards, just leave them leaning against the walls and point to them.

Hello Mister E

I am everytime happy if someone is rating the Restaurant. Perfect if it is a 5 star rating but helpful if it is a 2.5 star rating.

I will try to comment on all the issues and don't get me wrong but this is very helpful for me and I take it very seriously.

First of all. I am sorry but I cannot comment on anything that has to do with Thai Police or any kind of bribing. I hope you understand that.

Yes you are right about it..... the Restaurant seems closed and we try to find out how to make it more opened without making it look cheap at the same time (e.g. LED opening sign). We are working on that and we hope to find a solution soon.

The opening hours..... you got that a bit wrong. The Closing day is in order to let the staff have their day off together to form a unity and to reflect that to our customers. The opening hours are because after 8 pm we don't get any more customers. We were opened at the beginning until 10 pm for about 9 month and had this experience. As soon as we get busier we will be opened longer this is my goal for the near future.

About the Caesar Salad. There must have gone a lot of things very wrong. Actually the staff always has to ask the customer if they want Anchovys on top. Because some like it and some don't. About the seasoning. I have to apologize for that. I think you came here during the Chinese New year periode. During this time we couldnt get our prefered Olive Oil so we had to use Canola Oil instead. It can be used as a substitude but is by far not the same. Sorry but I will change that immediately. About the amount of Sauce.......Sorry again. Shouldnt be so much. I will talk to my staff first thing I get there. Could you please write me a message on Tripadvisor or on Facebook www.facebook.com/xxlkitchen when exactly you had the problem with the Caesar Salad. That would probably help me to get this problem resolved. One thing that I have another opinion then you is the size. Not all our dishes are supposed to be XXL. Only the ones in the XXL section. All other dishes are normal sized dishes and the salad is actually also a normal sized dish (Of course this is my opinion).

About the Burgers. Yes we have lean beef. This is now an individual taste issue. I personally had a burger 2 days ago and I didn't think of it as dry but I will have one today and check it out. The seasoning....well....sorry. Some like it and some don't but usually the response is good. I cannot change that because I'm backing up this seasoning 100%........

One last thing. Those big menus.....Sorry again but they are a signature for our Restaurant as well as the big burgers. We wont change that because it always (OK not in every case) puts a smile on peoples faces.

I hope I can welcome you back someday if not for the Burgers maybe for something else. And Please. If you have any issue with the food. Don't feel ashamed to ask for the manager or the owner right over there. We are happy if we can resolve the issue right away....

Thank you for rating.

“GIANT BURGERS!!!!”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

We had a great time at the restaurant. The owner was there and oversaw that our evening with the kids was great. Food was great and we left feeling full and happy. We didn't try the XXXL burger but saw one for a birthday party and it was larger than life. We loved the different dipping sauces and the burgers were fantastic. We will be back the next time were in Hua Hin.

“Manliest place in hua hin!!!”
Reviewed 30 December 2013 via mobile

If you are looking for massive giant burgers with some of the best mix of spices in Thailand, XXL Kitchen is your go to place. Never have I succumbed to a plate of food like the triple XXXL burger. If you have the mojo for it TRY IT you will be in awe of the burger at first, but the real competition starts when you first cut into it, and god **** if it isn't a tasty burger. I have tried everything on the XXL menu, besides the ocean plates. They are all amazing, the German pizza, do not be upset at it's size as it is only an app to get you started on the main course. I ****ing love XXL Kitchen Hua Hin, next time I am in Thailand I am coming right back hete to eat the best ****ing burgers you will ever have!i

Much love
