This should be on the tour but mercifully it isn't (although some days is can be busy with Thai coach parties). Pay the extra 40 baht and make sure you go upstairs. No air conditioning required here with sea breezes flowing through the rooms. Take the time to read the function of each room and its furnishings and build the picture of Royal Life in the 1920's. Above all there is a feeling of calm and peacefulness. When you exit the main complex and before you go past the ticket office, turn right and follow the paths round and into the Mangrove swamps (or else rent a bike or tandem). This area around the palace is also a wild life reserve and worth exploring - perferably on a bike which you can rent at the cafe.
