We never book in advance when we go thailand then use a last minute site to get accommodation and this was our lucky day. Typical great service and great place to chill.

I was traveling with my little girl (3 years) and we definitely was looking for a nice beach, which was of course not to find in downtown, so we moved to The Rock. Also here the beach was missing because of the high tide closed to new moon but the spacious room and the great balcony with sea view as well as the swimming pool facing the sea and the great stuff let us forget about the missing beach. In the surroundings of this Hotel is the village of Baan Takiab and there you can eat great thai food. Also a very nice temple and huge standing Buddha is not very far, there is also a small market.

And as the New moon was gone the beach came out and it was just gorgeous and so on our last day of stay we could even enjoy horse riding along the beach.

So, research was tough for Hua Hin hotels. The Sofitel was outrageous $$$, and we looked for something cheaper, but beach-front. Hence, The Rock.

We paid "extra" but the beach in January is NONEXISTENT

The water laps up to the wall of the pool, and there is NO beach. When I asked the front desk staff, they laughed and said, yes, no beach. Maybe around 8pm, there may be some showing, when the tide goes out.

So, do not stay here if you are expecting beach access. If you'd like to dive off a wall into the ocean this will work for you. And, book something in town instead.

Basically, we paid more $$ than a downtown hotel, for the beach - which isn't there. And, Agoda doesn't refund..

Luckily, we booked 1 night, leave the next day to stay in downtown Hua HIn- where the action is, and pay $10 for drinks at the Sofitel and use their beach. Sounds good to me.

We stayed here just for three nights. Its a top class hotel - but struggling due to lack of demand generally. The Thais think its the Government problems here, but its simply the credit crunch as all over the World. But what a hotel! An excellent design, fabulous planting and spacious rooms with comfortable new beds.

So there is a major bargain to be had. The hotel has everything you would want. The staff are great; the food at breakfast is delicious. There is a great pool. TAxis to the town are two pounds. Its better not to be in the town - which itself is interesting, but nonetheless it still better.

There is Wifi, fabulous balconies, huge baths, which are the size of small swimming pools!

I was very impressed and all this for a reduced price of 3,000 baht per night!

Opposite the hotel is agreat restaurant, called 'huahin ralug' which served the nicest food that we had eaten in Thailand. Thats quite difficult to do and even if it looks empty, you should try it. There is an older guy there who doesn't have great eye sight - he is the maitre dix and is a generally likeably guy. It takes thai food a little step further than curries and stirfries and fresh seafood. There is also a great restaurant called the Moon Terrace (17 Naresdamri Road on the docks of Hua Hin Fish Market). You go to Hua Hin for food and if you go to these restaurants, you will be impressed.

When you're there, take a trip to Hua Hin Hills Vinyard. The Shiraz is served chilled and can be drunk with Thai food even seafood and is beautiful.

First impressions of Hua Hin is that its a bit dodgy - but get over it and enjoy it - We would have liked to stay longer.

I can't think how the Rocks could have been better.
