The ancient buildings of the old empire. Build from stone, it's well kept and cared.

Almost no restriction within the boundary.

Sorry, no refresh booth or cold dring inside this 1000m x 1000m area. Some snack and 2-3 bottles of water in your small backpack helps too. An umbrella is highly suggested whether it's (hell hot) summer or (dog&cat) rainny season.

The temples at Muang Singh are the same style and era as Angkor Wat. These Hindu temples built in the 13th century, are the most westerly of the Khmer Empire. Aerial photos show it strongly resembles the Bayon in Cambodia and is laid out in perfect square. At its heart is the tallest remaining building, housing an eight armed Bodhisattva statue.
The ruins are off the main tourist trail and it is incredibly quiet and shady here. The site is high above a sharp bend in the River Kwai. Here you can grab a drink and admire the view. Don't miss the prehistoric burials here. Quite an unexpected addition to the site, from 2000 years ago.

We drove to the site of the ruins which were not far from Kanchanaburi town (15 minutes). The ruins are in a large park with various facilities and gardens, and on the afternoon of our visit we virtually had the place to ourselves. At the entrance gate you receive a brochure with an explanation of the various ruins. Most are nothing more than the foundations of long lost buidlings, but the main building has been reconstructed and there are 2 impressive statues, which photographed beautifully. I wandered around the ruins and read the descriptions in the brochures and with a little imagination you can get a feel for what it all may have been like. I read that these structures are the western most ruins of the Khmer empire in Thailand. Fascinating! It would be best to visit these ruins on the way to or from soemwhere else as it would only really take a relatively short amount of time to see everything.

We've been in Thailand three weeks and seen a lot of temples (!), but this was my favourite by far. We got there early 9ish when it was quiet and cool. It has to be one of the most tranquil and serene places I've ever visited! The temple ruins haven't been massively reconstructed, so they are still in a ruined state, but that only serves to create a specific atmosphere about the place. It is a little out of the way, but it is absolutely worth the effort :-)
