Would definitely return

We stayed at the Imperial in October 2012 for one night and wish we had stayed longer. The hotel is a little dated but typically Thai decor and in lovely grounds. This is all part of its charm. Rooms are spacious and clean, beds are comfortable. The staff were helpful and breakfast was international buffet. The hotel is about a 30 minute walk into the town centre, but there is a shuttle bus. This still makes it one of the more central places to stay. There is more to do and see in and around Mae Hong Son than guide books would have you believe. We accidentally visited during a festival and the night market was bigger than normal. Plenty of places to eat. Sadly the Imperial was fully booked when we wanted to take our friends in December but we would definitely stay here again.

I was on the second floor in a large hotel that had no lifts and for some reason you had to go down a flight of stairs before going up again! The room was quite large with a view of the garden and pool area as well as a small balcony. There was a large old style TV with several English-language channels. There was also free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel but no in room safe. The bed was hard with polyester sheets. It had a small bathroom with a small pedestal sink with not much space to put toiletries. Breakfast was buffet style with not much choice for the western palette but at least there was an egg station and you could make toast - so quite expensive for £6. The hotel is on the edge of town away from the lake, temple and market area. However, given the cost of the room with Expedia £30 I feel it was a reasonable choice.

Room tip: Rooms facing the pool/garden do not face the road which may be noisy. Chose a ground floor room if you don't like stairs!

Considering this is the "grandest" choice of hotel in Mae Hong Son and a fairly reputable chain, we were quite disappointed with the rooms. We had to risk getting burnt by the shower water, as the temperature fluctuated from hot spring hot to cold stream cold back to hot!! Dangerous as we were showering kids. We thought it was just our room, but our family 2 other rooms also had issues. To be fair, the rooms were very clean, staff were very friendly and breakfast decent. If you don't have your own transportation, better to stay closer to town, as this hotel is quite a drive away and Tuk Tuk is not readily available in this small town. And by the way, there's no lift, so we had to lug our luggage 3 floors up!! Not suitable if you've senior travelers.

Room tip: Pool facing room faces the greenery, so you can enjoy the generous balcony.

We turned up after a long ride on our motorbike. The staff were extremely helpful and obliging. The room was clean and tidy. The shower water was hot and in abundant. The hotel is out of the main town. There is a shuttle bus into the town. We ate at the Kai mook which was fab. We walked back which took about 30 mins... Which the only slight problem I could foresee were the stray dogs!! We paid 2500 thb which I felt was a little over priced!!

We stayed at the Imperial Resort 3 nights in November 2012. We loved the place.

True, it is a bit «dated» as other reviews have pointed out but we actually found it is part of the charm of this hotel. The superb environment, the massive teak wood presence all around and the general hotel design that integrates all local features is absolutely charming.

Mae Hong Son is a beautiful remote countryside location and the Imperial fits very well in this global setting. We have been in other «dated» hotel infrastructures where a lot of services bear the impact of time (loud A/C, broken window or sliding door, etc,). The Imperial does not show these deficiencies at all, on the contrary. All services work very well, from the very efficient A/C to the free Internet service. We only wished that a safe would have been available in our room. That was all we did not find practical.

And our experience with the hotel staff was impeccable, from the dining room to the concierge. Right upon arrival, we checked in and investigated if a car could be provided to us at the hotel by PR Car Rental located downtown. The concierge took care of all details with the car rental company. As a result, we had a car delivered within 60 minutes of our check in. We were ready to hit the road and start visiting. Talk about great service.

As for location, the hotel is located a couple of kilometers south of town. We did not find this to be an issue at all as visiting Mae Hong Son does require some prearranged transportation for all visitors (own wheels, tours or others). Mae Hong Son offers a few sites of interest in town but many sites (long neck villages, waterfalls, Mae Aw, etc.) are located outside of town, as far as 45 kilometers away. So coming to Mae Hong Son without transportation options would be, by definition, a serious mistake.

So if you come to Mae Hong Son, give the Imperial a try. You will experience a perfectly well integrated hotel with a great setting, plenty of charm and great service.

I agree with the other reviewers that the Imperial is somewhat outdated but that adds to the atmosphere. There were hardly any people when I was there so felt like I had the hotel to myself. Given the price, it is a good deal. Rooms are spacious and clean and they all have a balcony or terrace. I was on the road side but given how peaceful Mae Hong Son is, there was hardly any traffic after dark. There is a pool in the back overlooking a stream and trees. Breakfast is OK with an acceptable choice of different things. There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby. The main consideration is that it is a few kilometers outside Mae Hong Son town and therefore a bit of walk. If that is not a concern then this place is fine, at least for a few nights.
