My partner and I stayed in a Pool Access Room for 8 nights. This resort is amazing.
Our room opened out onto a deck which has steps directly into the huge lagoon style swimming pool (1 of three pools - All huge).
The room was beautiful inside, furnishing very nice. Room clean and serviced at least once a day.
The pool access rooms are for adults and the pool that they open out to is generally not used by children either, so its very quiet and peacefull.
The only time we went to the beach was for the beach massages, as it was a bit rocky and tidal, but the 3 pools make up for that!
Not right in Patong but I think this was a good thing, there were no crowds and it was no problem walking right outside the reception and either jumping in a Tuk Tuk or hiring a scooter.
A Tuk Tuk into town is around THB200 each way for the 5 min ride, it is cheaper to hire a scooter - THB300per day normally.
Defenately a 5 Star resort. Would highly recommend to anyone - couples and families.

I have just returned from 7 nights at the Merlin Beach and after reading all the excellent reports on this site was left feeling a bit dissapointed. We booked a pool access room and this made up for other aspects of the hotel - i would not return unless was staying in a pool access room. For me personally the hotel felt huge and sometimes like a holiday camp at no poin did you really feel like you were in Thailand. Also the entertainment was a let down the same band sang in the lobby every night with no variation and the drinks were reasonably priced but watered down. Breakfast was excellent but we ate twice in the hotel in the Evening the food was expensive and of an average standard and service was really really slow. If you are planning a stay i would go into Patong to eat much better food and service. To get into Patong costs 200 baht on way and you can not barter them down at all so it costs you £6 return to get into patong after 2 weeks this adds up, the hotel has a courtesy bus but the times are either 4.30pm or 9.30pm so makes it difficult to go out and eat!
This hotel is nice but after staying in a smaller hotel in Koh Samui i was dissapointed. I would recommend a stay on Phi Phi island we did this at the end of Phuket and loved it.

The Merlin Beach resort is a fantastic spot, my partner and I loved it. Location wise - It takes an hour from the airport but who wants to be near the airport anyway! Great if you're not into the hustle and bustle of Patong Beach but still close enough if you need to stock up on snacks and water from the millions of 7-elevens everywhere. Like any hotel worldwide food and drink prices are ridiculously overpriced considering you can get it cheaper in Patong so always a good idea to buy bottles of water and snacks outside of the hotel. We had a superior room which overlooked one of the three swimming pools. The room was modern, large and clean. The buffet breakfast is great and there are 4 restaurants to choose from.
The beach is really crap but who needs the beach when there are 3 pools.
There is also a restaurant called the Garden view hill top that you must try which you can access by walking towards the hotel's beach.Top marks for this restaurant. Because it is situated on a hill top you get a nice cool breeze and the guy that runs it Ong is really good value. The food is magnificent and we were surprised that when we ordered fish that we got served with a good sized trevally!

We have just returned from our first trip to Thailand staying at the Merlin Beach Resort. The resort with 3 pools, 4 restaurants was magnificent. The rooms were spacious with the usual Thai feel, with views overlooking the pools and the resorts own provate beach. It was only a short ride into town, which makes the resort in a perfect location, just out of Patong Beach enough to be serene and peaceful but close enough to enjoy the culture. The people and service at the resort was first class, whether eating at one of the restaurants, sitting at the pool bar, or listening to the nightly entertainment. Highly recommend this resort for anyone travelling to Phuket.

I have just returned from 2 weeks at this hotel 1/11/06 -16/11/06.

Great hotel with good all round amenities, i wouldnt say it was 5 star but its an ok 4 star.

All the restaurants were good, including the breakfast buffet. The only thing i would say wasnt so great was the evening buffet. Avoide it like the plague unless you like lemon grass flavour spaghetti bolognese!.

We had a second floor room above the pool access rooms. It was spacious and clean and we had no problems with it at all. Beware if you want to upgrade to a pool access room, they wanted an extra £200 a week for it so we declined.

We noticed the hotel filling up by the second week and getting a sunbed was a bit difficult, particularly when you had couples reserving themselves 4 sunbeds with towels, whch i found both greedy and bizarre.

In the evenings its pretty boring, there is a band in the lobby to accompany the watered down drinks.

TIP

Eat in town and only drink the beer Singha in the hotel, they cant water that down!

Overall a great base for a holiday in Patong

We have just arrived home after spending the first seven nights of our holiday at the Merlin Beach Resort. We are a family of five - we have three children aged 15,13 and 8. The Merlin lived up to all of our expectations and then some. Admittedly we spent very little time actually hanging out around the pools and such because we were out and about every day doing amazing things, but the time there was a retreat. For us it was the best decision to stay outside of Patong. For one reason, the kids loved the chance to rip in and out on tuk-tuks and it added to their experience, but it was quiet and located on a much nicer beach than we had anticipated after reading the reviews. Yes, it's tidal and exposes rocks at low tide but the kids loved exploring the rock pools and the sand was silky and white. The massage ladies on the beach were great and one of them actually arranged for her brother to pick us up at the hotel beach in his long-tail boat and take us to Freedom beach (just around the corner) which was paradise. We were lucky that the tides were high for most of the day while we were there. From the moment we arrived they made us feel welcome and accomodated our every need - considering the kids locked themselves out of their room twice and we never seemed to return their pool towels on time, they still met us with a smile. The breakfasts were brilliant, the rooms were clean and spacious and any tours, car hire etc. can be arranged at the hotel for a competitive price.

The only negatives I can think of were that our rooms were a long walk from the reception area (which was a pain when we were locked out again!) and we weren't given adjoining rooms with a common door but side by side, which might be hard with younger children but worked for us.

I also would highly recommend the John Grays Sea Canoe tour, the Siam safari 4-in-one and the Coral Seekers private boat charter to outer islands. We researched a lot before we went and weren't disappointed - far from it - they were all fantastic days out for both young and old.

Oh, one last thing, if you book a Deluxe room there is no safe in your room unless you pay a daily charge to use it but there are safes for your use at the reception area free of charge which we used for all our travel documents, passports and spare credit cards etc. for the week....

did the pay for 5, stay for 10 nights end of low season special. we travelled in a group (3 young couples) and all thoroughly enjoyed the service, smiles and overall niceness of the resort. we had one of the top level rooms and all the rooms are clean & spacious, with all the necessary creature comforts one would want. the resort has 4 restaurants, (we ate at all) which has good priced and great quality food.. the breakfast buffet is great so dont skimp out if you can include this in your package (i think i put on 5kgs after this holiday ha!). the pools are great with plenty of sunlounges for all. the staff are friendly and always welcoming - especially the bar staff!

would highly recommend for anyone looking for a holiday with a combo of relaxation and fun times!

ps. beware of the tuk tuk mafia out front. they tried to rip us off half the time cos we travelled in a group and by mid trip we didnt stand for it.
