Bangtao Tropical Residence Resort & Spa
Reviewed 2 January 2012

We booked this " resort" after reading their website. What a mistake! There were no cots available, a kitchen bare of any utensils, pots, pans, plates, cutlery and to top it off the stove was not connected. And as for the Spa, it did not exist.
When approached we were told that they were not a resort but residences. Strange they advertise as a resort and spa!
If we wanted a cot , not available but were given a doona for a 11 week old baby to sleep on.
If we wanted the kitchen to boil water to sterilize bottles we would have to pay10000 baht as a deposit to connect stove. Has anyone heard of such a thing for a " resort"?

When we approached the management they really couldn't have cared less.
After two hours of speaking with management they connected the stove and gave us. A saucepan. Again I say after 2 hours. Their web site says that your stay is all about you. No way !
It is unfortunate that we had to experience this disappointment in our choice of resort as the building is new, well set out, two room jacuzzi suite was roomy with a great view over the pool.
I believe that they are very short on staff as the manager was serving tables and learning tables and there seemed to be only one housemaid to clean rooms.
The receptionist was very arrogant and unfriendly when ever approached.
Imagine our disappointment after reading their web page which sounded so inviting to be met with such disappointment.
We have stayed in many Asian resorts and were expecting the same service to be expected from a four star resort . This resort did not come anywhere near the service one would expect

This is a wonderful apartment/hotel. Great location - just a short walk through tropical jungle lined small paths to either Surin Beach, Bang Tao Beach or Surin Road shops. The one-bed apartment is very spacious and the patio doors let in a lot of light. We had a fabulous view at the back overlooking the mountains and many evenings watched the sun set from the enormous balcony. Initially we wanted to self-cater, but due to the supermarket shortages caused by the floods, and the huge variety of food vendors, restaurants and cafes nearby, we dined out most of the time. The Tropical also has its own restaurant too. The swimming pool with in-built jacuzzi jets is lovely to relax by or for a quick swim after the beach. Pool towels available in the rooms.

We stumbled across the property on foot after staying locally, as part of our three month visit to Thailand, and were very glad we did. The staff are very friendly and helpful, no maintenance issues even though it is a new property. Kitchen equipment and wifi is available in the apartments, plus all regular hotel amenities.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back have mountain views, and rooms at the front overlook the pool.

There was a film crew staying there at the time so it was very busy but nothing was too much trouble! Special note of thanks to the funny Englishman Mike who helped us so much. Great location, great facilities and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Lovely suites with private plunge pool on the balcony

Stayed here for 4 days, very new resort but was spotless and was quite refreshing after the Marriott Courtyard in Patong. A few teething problems as its new, but I felt the staff couldnt do enough! Will make this as a base next year as its a little out the way and they are very helpful making sure one gets a good deal on family trips. The pool was superb and clean unlike some places where clients tend to leave glasses lying aroung....very important if you have an active 5 year old. We´ll definitley be back this year for Christmas and New year!!! Not sure about the room service as we were self catering.

Room Tip: Make contact with the resort if you need anything out of the ordinary. My wife cut her foot in Paton...

This is a new condominium posing as a hotel. We intitially were impressed with the pre stay communication and a main reason for choosing it. Unfortunately our experience was miserable.

Aside from the 'Hotel' itself (which was spotless being new) we booked a 2 bed apratement suite with plunge pool etc- quite expensive but we thought we'd treat ourselves. As we had 3 young children we couldnt go out much and therefor we always book villas or places with kitchens.

Imagine our surprise when we turned up and we found the kitchen wasnt connnected to power. No cutlery, no cooker, cooktop, no plates, no nothing. On asking the Manager about this he expressed embarrasment and said "Oh yeah, i probably should have told you that - you couldnt use the kitchen as were trying to sell these and dont want them 'used' ". Thanks for that. They offered to move us to a different -lesser- apartment but refused to offer any discount.

We were promised a microwave and some bowls etc and got neither. 5 days into the stay was when we were finally informed by the junior manager (A German) 'this wouldnt happen and ya i have 4 children of my own so i know how it is"

The place suffered from the Eastern European traveller effect- IE a lmited amount of pool lounges and the habit of guests 'saving' their seats and then going out for the day. On complaints about this to other guests and talking to the manager- he was not only unhelpful- mentioning it was alright to do it but then preceded to have a conversation with the guest id complained to right next to me in German. Unfortunately he didnt realise i understand a smattering of the language and I was quite amazed (but not quite surprised) to hear the Manager answer the other guests (the person i complained to) questions about me/where i was from etc.

The location was a fairly long walk from the beach and required transport so that was out and didnt have any shops nearbye.

The positive things were the food prices (they werent stupid prices) and the spa was good and reasonably priced- and would have been great if there was more than one person who was there (and she closed it at 7pm!!) We tried to book a few times and she was never there. The local staff were lovely however. Amazingly it was the western staff that spoilt it.

To put it bluntly- unless your German or Russian i would give this Hotel a very wide berth. I couldnt wait to leave.

The customer was quite correct in that the kitchen was not connected and we did offer an alternative , identical to the the one booked but without the pool. If that had been acceptable then there was a price difference which would have been remitted and a compensation of some sort offered.
The guests at the time were all Swedish, as was the junior manager, and I am sure he was not speaking disrespectfully, or in German, as he is a personable young man and we both felt we had let this customer down quite badly in that we could not restore power to the kitchen and a microwave would not have worked.
The towels on the sun loungers is no longer an issue, when it came to our
attention we had the pool attendants collect the towels of the absentees and send them to the laundry.
I personally followed up the complaints and having read the Trip Advisor review we offered a weeks stay free of charge, with the kitchen working.
We were in out first high season and the amenities and staff were tested to the maximum and of course, in such a busy period, mistakes were made. For the most part they were relatively small and easily corrected, but we did feel we had let the family down and hoped that this would compensate.
