“An old Classic”
Reviewed 6 May 2013

The Aman Puri is somewhere i had been to some 15 years ago. It is certainly a classic - with a very low key Thai inspired decor. Lots of dark stone and rich woods. It still looks good, but is looking its age and rather dated. It has rather lost its lustre and didnt have the panache and attention to detail that I remember. The beach is small but has white sand - not as immaculate as it used to be. The demise of the Chedi next door is a shame as this was always a nice place to go to for some variety - that is now rather run down. The Aman Puri's main problem is that for the price there are now some very beautiful options. Still has tremendous potential but it needs some invigoration.

It is a delight to find this marvelous beauty of this resort within an incredible tropical setting. The pristine beach is superb, as well as the three pools. Service is outstanding and your every need will be met by courteus and attentive staff. The rooms are tastefully decorated with generous areas in every respect. From the settings to the quality of service, we were not disappointed.

What we did not find up to luxury standard is the food. For the price - thirty dollar hamburger / table wine in the hundred dollar range - you would expect more, much more. Breakfast was good, but closer to average than excellence!

The prices are steep...very steep. But overall, the experience is worthwhile.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with ocean views!

A group of 12 of us staying in a nearby private villa complex wanted to sample the Aman experience and booked dinner at the resort restaurant. Upon booking, the staff member insisted we eat early. We obliged by arriving at 6.30 but wanted to start the evening at the outside bar watching the sunset with cocktails. We were rushed to order and even before the cocktails had arrived, were asked to move inside to the restaurant. When we asked to stay until we had received and finished our cocktails, the restaurant menus were brought out to us at the bar! The waiter insisted we choose a few dishes to share but we asked to have our own meals. To make the evening smoother, we all chose the same set menu. The service was uniformly poor. Meals were forgotten, our main meals were all combined into a few bowls and we were asked to share, and no-one, including the restaurant manager seemed to care. We are all fortunate enough to have dined in many great locations, and we all agreed that this was one of the most unusual meals we had experienced. I asked the manager why we had been treated so poorly. He told me that during high season, outside bookings were not usually taken and we had been accepted by mistake. He intimated that they wanted us out as quickly as possible to make room for other guests. This situation was very poorly handled by a resort group that supposedly sets the standard for luxury and for exemplary service.

This place is amazing. The service is incredible. We had a pool room with a partial ocean view, tons of space to ourselves and incredibly private. Also, we were there in high season but they were only about 60% full, I am told this is standard and intentional. No reservations are needed for anything, you can walk to any of the restaurants and sit down. Likewise you can walk to the beach and get any seat you want, on the water, in the shade, etc. No one rushes to the beach here and tries to reserve a spot, which I have always found highly annoying when I see it happen. The minute you arrive to the beach someone greats you, prepares your chairs, brings you ice and water, etc. They also constantly adjust your umbrellas, etc. Several of the staff members also remembered us from day-to-day, but we were only there a handful of days. It is also nice not waiting for a bill, they take your room number when you sit down anywhere and just bill you (you can of course see the bill if you want). The best part was when the mercedes dropped us at the airport there were two porters who spoke fluent thai and english who got us through the checkin line quickly and ensured our bags were checked through to the USA (this was a huge help). Fresh flowers are rotated in the room, beautiful orchids one day and then an amazing arrangement the next. Fresh fruit in the room also, candles lit when you come back from dinner, chairs around our private pool nicely prepped, etc. Rooms were in very good shape, no wear or tear. Also good room service. You get what you pay for and they nailed all the little details that so many places miss. Rooms reminded me of Carneros Inn in California, but nicer and larger. Only place I have ever had better service was Blackberry Farms (and it is the #1 inn in the world).

A few very minor nits
- Some of the headphone connectors in the gym were busted (the gym is amazing, views from every spot over the ocean)
- Some of the beach staff could have been slightly more attentive when you needed a drink, towel, etc, had to chase them down a few times
- It is 6 degrees from the equator, so even during the best time of the year it is hot and the sun is very strong (you will burn if you are caucasian)
- Very expensive (particularly the spa and boat rentals)
- Ultimately Thailand is a third world country, so while you don't notice it at the resort if you try to spend any time in Bangkok or elsewhere it will hit you and people outside the resort will try to rip you off (not a ding against Amapuri, but I had to mention it because as a US citizen we wondered if we wouldn't have been just as happy at an equally nice/expensive resort not literally halfway around the world).
- The thai dinner restaurant could have been a little better for the price, lunch was decent and the japanese restaurant was very good. We did not try the Italian restaurant (didn't look like many people did)

Room Tip: 908 private pool with partial ocean view was amazing, worth the upgrade expense. One of two such ro...

one of the first aman hotel. everyone loves it, prices sky high, location great. rooms even after update just ok.
some of the vvillas have the most spectacular view you could get. bt be pepared... a villa sets you easily back 4-5tsd euro a night.
never mind the other ste of costs you will find on your check out bill.
is it worth it: yes , if you re up for a romantic couple of days if you want to play golf, use the fleet to be out on open sea, if you just want to rlax...
after overcoming the bill you will book again.. i promise

Room Tip: get a villa if you are more than 2

We went to Amanpuri in the early 1990s for the first time. I told the kids we were going to a place with no TV or telephones (cell phones not being so prevalent then). They were quite dreading this until we got there and we were all so taken by the beauty and serenity. It took no effort to sync with the gentle rhythm.
Two weeks ago, we went again, after nearly 20 years. My concerns that Amanpuri might be getting a bit old and tired were quickly allayed. The buildings and rooms were immaculate; the grounds even more beautiful; and the staff attentive and courteous. needless to say, the food was so good we never left the grounds of the hotel!
It is somewhat pricey, but so very worth it!

Amanpuri
We visited here at the end of our stay in Thailand. We thought we would save the best until last. We heard so much about Amanpuri. It is important to say that the setting is exquisite. The secluded beach area spectacular - and the beach staff are to be commended for their consistent outstanding service. Restaurants were average. However in the villa - we we're very fortunate to have Ben and Tor who made the most outstanding meals for us - dining in the villa was the highlight of our stay. The rooms were good - the hotel is old, and donot understand why a hotel of this ranking has not upgraded its aircondition units. They are so loud - they interrupt ones sleep. Afternoon tea - was exceptional, authentic and very tastefully presented. The Spa - other than the wonderful receptionist Cat - we felt that although the spa was in beautiful surroundings, treatments were average - and unfortunately had to have a treatment repeated as it was not done well at all. The fitness centre was exceptional. Takin all into account - it is highly overated.
