UDON STAR PALACE HOTEL - UNCUT DIAMOND
This was my second visit to Udon Thani (NE Thailand) in province renown throughout Thailand as Essan. The first time I went to that city I stayed at the Centara Hotel which was ok but not particularly impressive so this time I searched the internet and found a very remarkable hotel called the Udon Star Palace Hotel.
I call this place ‘The Uncut Diamond’ for a good reason. From the outside, the hotel does not seem very notable but when you enter the place you find an amazing array of antique and classic: pictures, artefacts and model cars and ships. The owner is a French man called Glio, he travels the world to collect rare items to adorn his hotel as well as using his artistic talent to make some extraordinary chandeliers that adorn the reception area of the hotel.
Glio is fortunate to have a beautiful, friendly, soft-spoken wife called Cindy who manages the hotel and makes you feel warm and fussy the moment you meet her. I love her French-Thai accent, quite rare for my experience, but particularly her warm, pleasant and relaxed approach to dealing with her patrons. The staffs there called Nutch, Pa, and another very peasant young lady, are very capable, caring and friendly; moreover, they can never do enough for you.
The newly renovated interior design of the hotel has a French ambience with predominately black and red colour scheme. The rooms are spacious especially rooms 12 and 15 which are 75 sqm with unusual chic furnishing and fittings. I stayed in room 12 which was on the top floor with its own staircase that made it seem like a penthouse apartment. The flat screen TV is huge as is the bed and the view through the sound-proof floor to ceiling windows that conveniently overlook the main strip of bars, restaurants and the Central Plaza. The room has a lounge/dining area in front of the windows and 2 modern couches that open up into double beds in their own private guest/bar space inside the apartment at the top of the apartment’s staircase. The apartment also has a swinging suspended wicker chair, floor to ceiling mirrors, classic paintings and murals, electric mosquito killer, very unusual bathroom fittings/accessories and solid granite floors.
I returned to Udon Thani a second time just one week later purely because I wanted to stay at the Udon Star Palace again for a 4 day romantic holiday with my lady. I highly recommend this hotel because of its unique and memorable design/décor, the wonderful staff, Cindy the outstanding and beautiful manager as well as the hotel’s central location and walking distance to everything the town has available for tourists. The hotel only has 15 rooms so you can be assured of receiving personal and special hospitality as was afforded to me and my partner.
