I went here for 4 days with my husband, son, and parents. The house is about one hour drive from the Udon Thani airport, off the paved roads in the middle of a quiet village. This place is such a gem. If you want to have a unique, special vacation rather than stay in a typical hotel with all the same amenities as every other hotel, this is your place! There are so many things I loved about this place but to name just a few:

The food - Ten and crew did a great job of cooking each of our meals and were always open to our suggestions;

The bikes - they lent us their decent quality bikes to cruise around the village, which was by far the highlight for me;

The tuk-tuk tour - it was great to get out and see more of the village;

The salt water pool - we barely left this pool, for meals and bike rides only...saltwater pools are amazingly cozy!

We wanted to get away from Bangkok city life and experience a side of Thailand that we had not seen yet...we got that exactly! The air conditioners weren't perfect but they kept us cool enough to have a good night's sleep. It was nice knowing that we were staying somewhere that was established by a member of the village rather than lining the pockets of an already rich farang investor in Thailand.

Gekko villa is an amazing place - so tranquil. Ten, Euang and Anne were the most perfect hosts - nothing was too much trouble. The meals were fantastic and the side trips to villages, the towns, "field mice hunting" and the boat trip on the lake were just wonderful. We attempted to assist in the rice harvest though I think we got more in the way then helping. Very down to earth , kind and humble people. We were 2 couples and we can't wait to come back & stay longer. In fact we would go to Thailand just to stay there - but longer. If you want to experience the "True Thailand" and its people - this place is it. It was so relaxing we had trouble staying awake! Do stay for at least 3 - 4 days or longer to absorb the atmosphere. We found it very difficult to leave. Can't understand the one negative comment - every other comment is positive.

We stayed at Gecko Villa in late Nov 09, only just getting round to writing review now though.

After a stressful couple of months in London and having raced round a very hot Bangkok checking out the sights, we were really looking forward to seeing if Gecko Villa lived up to the lovely pictures on its website. It did, and more.

We were picked up at the airport and as we drove through the darkness and winding, bumpy country roads, neither of us were sure where we were going to end up. What we found was a large and lovely house, staffed by the very welcoming Ten, his wife, Euang and her mother whose name I forget - sorry! They had dinner and cold beers ready for us and our stay at Gecko began.

I can only echo other reviews when I say that this place is just great. I can't think of any negative points at all, except that we didn't book for longer!

Ten and his family cooked us three delicious, super-fresh meals a day and had no problems with me being a veggie. They also had fun testing my boyfriend's chilli tolerance. We are going to try and recreate their very tasty rice soup which we had for breakfast every day.

The bedroom is huge and nicely decorated with a massive, comfy bed. The bathroom has a big outdoor shower. Never experienced one of these before but it certainly helped to wake me up with the nice view.

The swimming pool is stunning and we spent most of time either in it or lying by it, reading or staring at the view and the random cows that passed by.

The place is done out in lovely Thai style with lots of dark wood and pretty material used. The kitchen is modern-looking with a cool outdoor section.

The surrounding gardens are really beautiful with all sorts of exotic plants, flowers, crazy-looking insects and gorgeous butterflies. Not to mention the tiny geckos speeding around the place. It's so dark at night that we could pick out star constellations and the Milky Way, which was pretty amazing. You can also tune in to all the night noises too. Make sure you put your mozzie repellent when the sun starts to go down.

Ten was happy to drive us anywhere we wanted. We also had use of a scooter and had loads of fun riding it around the countryside, narrowly avoiding the very bold chickens and being laughed at by the local kids.

The surrounding area is rural and peaceful but also vibrant with locals cracking on with their work, kids playing, dogs and chickens running around and scooters zipping from A to B. Unlike anything we have at home for sure.

This place was an absolute bargain as far as we're concerned. We couldn't have asked for a more relaxing 4 days and it was a great way to see another side of Thailand.

This was our first time in Thailand and we loved it, due in part to friendly places like Gecko and the lovely place we stayed in in Bangkok (Phranakorn Nornlen). Thank you Ten and family, we have recommended Gecko Villa to friends and would definitely stay again.

We came to Gecko Villa after a very busy time at work, and tours of Bangkok, Khao Yai jungle park and Doi Inthanon Park. We came to relax, have a gentle time, and catch up on reading. We certainly did. As every other review of gecko states, Tan Aeng and An are lovely, friendly people, wonderful cooks and perfect hosts. The villa itself is set in rural Thailand and were elighted to adapt our pace of life to the slower daily rhytms of Isaan. We enjoyed watching the birds, cycling through the countryside, visiting ban Chiang and the silk market at Udon Thani. 5 days of peace, perfect relaxation and wondeful food; we will return!

This was our second stay at Gecko. Our first stay was such an incredible experience where we met and got to know Ten & Euang, experienced the local village first hand and met a lot of the locals, sat and chatted with the monks in the local Wat and even got caught up in the 'after school' scooter rush hour. Being surrounded by kids on scooters that were so curious about the two farangs sahring a scooter was one of the funniest experiences of my life. It's hard to encapsulate all the amazing experiences and the magic of Gecko itself but suffice to say we returned two years later to get married at Gecko. We invited the local villagers as well as some special friends, can I just say that if you want a truly memorable wedding experience this is it!!! The people here are incredible and boy do they know how to party, the location is amazing and off the beaten track with the end result being exactly what we wanted. Gecko is a specal place and those of us that have had the pleasure of discovering it and the surrounding area are very fortunate. As the other posts have elaborated on, the food is great - real food rather than processed food, and you get to choose your 'hotness/spiciness' rating and can vary this as you get more adventurous. The pool, I'm sure we all left waterlogged, to be able to relax in and around this pool with a beverage of choice and simply enjoy the company and the serenity is something many people search for endlessly without finding it. The experience at Gecko is about becoming part of the local community as well as enjoying new insights into a culture that is both thousands of years old and extraordinarily beautiful. We will definitely be returning and plan to have an anniversary party there in the future.
Thank you Ten & Euang (and Charles)
