“Perfect location, beautiiful room, great breakfast”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

We have stayed in many bed and breakfasts and this one will rank as one of the best. The owner is gracious and very welcoming. Captain Visger is located within walking distance of the St Lawrence Seaway and the boat ride to Boldt Castle. While we always appreciate a clean, nicely decorated room, the food here was the highlight of our visit. Sam is a great chef who can present wholesome, delicious meals. If we ever return to Alexandria Bay, we will hope to stay here again.

We never stay at B&B's but based on the reviews of this place we decided to give it a try. What an amazing experience! The house is beautiful but not intimidating--it quickly felt like home. Of course Sam had a lot to do with that. She is warm, welcoming, engaging, and filled with spunk! And boy can that girl cook!! She redefines breakfast and I suspect that others, like us, will spend part of the ride home brainstorming how we can recapture some of that breakfast magic and make it part of our weekend routine.
I still don't know how to feel about B&B's as I'm worried that others will not compare to this one, but I know that we will definitely be returning to Captain Visger's. We stayed in the Captain's Suite and it was beautiful. We had some fun discussions with other guests at breakfast, and left feeling like Sam was a new friend.

Room Tip: The stairs to Captain's Suite and Harmonius are steep--if this is an issue choose a different ro...

We stayed 2 nights at this B&B to celebrated our 24th anniversary. Although it wasn't directly on the St. Lawrence River, just a short walk down the street is a scenic park on the river, where I took a number of pictures of the many small islands. The house was very comfortable & clean. The innkeeper, Sam, was very inviting & gave us many suggestions for sightseeing & dining in the area, including Canada. She even let us pet her 2 cats, since we missed our own 2. She accommodated our eating peccadilloes for breakfast, which was very good, especially the organic bacon! We appreciated having a room on the first floor, so we didn't have to walk up & down the steep stairs to the second floor. We would have liked more privacy in the bathroom, since there was no door.

Room Tip: Ask questions about the rooms.

We stayed at this B & B for four nights earlier this month. I booked online, based on previous Trip Advisor reviews. The house has been lovingly restored, with great attention to detail. Every room is beautiful, and very clean. But, it was Sam, the innkeeper, who stole our hearts. She is candid, honest, funny, sincere, outspoken and we now consider her a friend. She thinks of her guests as 'gifts' and treats them as such. She goes above and beyond to ensure that your stay is as pleasant as possible. Breakfasts are a delight! Once she has found out her guests' likes and dislikes, she prepares meals with all of that in mind. No ordinary pancakes or eggs here. We had things for breakfast that we had never previously considered breakfast food :-) Sam is a marvelous chef and baker, and breakfast holds you until dinner. She also packed leftover muffins for us to take on our daily adventures. She advised us on restaurants, boat tours, trips to Canada, etc. and everything she told us was spot on. We felt like family and were sad to leave. You can't go wrong staying here. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Ella is a first floor room. We changed from an upstairs room because of a hip problem. It is right a...

As a B&B owner myself, I enjoy staying at other b and b’s when I travel. I expect them to vary widely in design and décor but my standards are high when it comes to cleanliness and service. Our stay at Captain Visger’s was a delightful experience on all accounts. The house itself has been beautifully restored. Our room, Harmonious, was tastefully decorated, spotless and the bed was so comfortable. The little library on the same floor gave us an additional cozy place to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner. But more importantly, our hostess, Sam, made us feel so welcome in her house. She really cares that each of her guests has a great experience. This is reflected not only in the amenities available but also through her cooking (wholesome, interesting and hearty breakfasts). I wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else in Alexandria Bay.

Just had a two night stay over Labor Day weekend. Had never been to Alex Bay before. As previous reviews point out, Sam is one of the main selling points of this B & B. She tries to please you with your breakfast choices and what you do and do not like. This B & B is very very conveniently located one block from the city central intersection. The room was clean, bed comfortable. Loved her shampoo and liquid peppermint soap. Just a very good place to stay. Glad we chose this over Captain Thompson's Resort or other choices.

I selected this B&B based on other TripAdvisor reviews... and we were not disappointed! The inn owner, Sam, has enough personality for 5 people; she is so warm & open & friendly. And she truly makes the most delicious, inspired breakfasts we've eaten. We stayed in the "Catherine July" room, which is small but very nicely appointed. Since we basically only used it for sleeping, the size did not present any problem. We also got a peek into some of the other rooms, & all looked nice although very different from each other. The place is immaculate & the high level of care taken is obvious. Sam also provided us with great restaurant & attraction recommendations. This is a very nice and intimate place, with a great location right near the main street and the river --- very walkable. I would say that it's not a place for kids to stay; it's more of a romantic, quiet place. I highly recommend the Capt. Visgers House. And I think my new fiancee does too! (proposed during the trip)

Room Tip: Although close to the river, I don't think any room offers a nice river view. Select based on yo...
