This was unusual. We were delayed by 6 ½ hours (done that) and got out of the airport about 2:45am (done that) at a North African resort (done that 6 times). Pushed the trolley 400 yards from the terminal to the coach, found the luggage hold, the chap (driver ?) loaded it, a 2 second job, and made it clear he wanted a tip ! He didn’t get one from me, but plenty more were tipping him (a severely delayed flight remember). And no, he wasn’t the driver. If you are on a Thomas Cook package, be warned.
Arrived at the hotel approximately 3:45 am. The Porter who took our cases made sure we were in our room OK (he deserved a tip) and the waiter at breakfast who looked after us when we were there 3 years ago came bounding over to say hello, and then looked after us when he was on duty that week (he deserved a tip as well), but not the bag loader, no.
As we were very late Reception gave us the usual form on arrival and asked that we drop it in sometime the following day. I did this and arranged the safe at the same time – 2 ½ Dinars a day, just under £1. It is a combination one as well, so no key to lose.
I must explain we booked this trip very late, because the price was brilliant and we knew the hotel from 3 years previous. So we knew that it is not 5 star – it does not claim to be – but we were not to be disappointed with our week there.
Food – the main restaurant does all 3 main meals and the seating area is L shaped. The food area is not large, but they do try to have a reasonable variation of dishes. There is always a Tunisian dish available, and there is always “make your own” pasta and pizza (the individual “make your own” pizzas are only in the evening, and excellent. They start with a dough ball, and before your eyes …..). The menu is posted outside of the restaurant about 2 hours before lunch and dinner, possibly earlier.
There is a specialty restaurant serving, on alternate openings, a fixed seafood or Lebanese menu. We did not try it and cannot comment, other than we suggest you view the menu which is on display on the main reception desk.
Drinks – the beer is good, and at lunch and dinner you will be given a bottle of your choice (house red, white or rose). Do not be afraid to ask for a second bottle, this is not a problem. The beach bar opens at 9am and the pool one at 10am. The both close at 6pm. The main bar between the reception and the restaurant opens at 6pm. Sorry, I do not know when it closes . Some cocktails are included, but some are extra (like Mojito) which is displayed in the bars menu’s.
Wifi – this we discovered is available free in our room with more than adequate reception.
Room – small, but comfortable and clean. Remember this was a bit of a bargain for us – there were only 3 rooms available when we booked through Thomas Cook – so they were probably selling the least attractive rooms, but we cannot complain. Although we faced the front of the hotel this was an excellent sun trap in the afternoons.
Tips – of course staff will – politely – look for these, but there is a tip box to the right of reception as you look at it, so you can leave your odd currency for the staff teams that you feel deserve them, i.e. there is a compartment for bar staff, a compartment for reception staff, waiters, etc,
One final thing – are you on the Friday Thomas Cook Gatwick 9:35pm flight ? Pick up is about 7pm. So I asked about a late checkout, and was advised to ask at reception at 8 am on the day of checkout. So we did – and to have the room until 6pm was 60 Dinars – less than £25 at today’s rate of exchange. I do not know how many rooms they can accommodate or whether we were just lucky as our room was not occupied that night, but it is a very fair price and worth asking about.
Did we enjoy it ? Yes. It is a quiet area and not for everyone, but if you want to “flop” for a week it is worth considering. Will we go back ? Yes, definitely in 2 or 3 years, to see our our waiter friend is doing.
