“Amazing hotel and holiday”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

Got back on Thursday from 11 nights of luxury and pure relaxation. If you are considering this as your holiday destination, book it now. You will not regret it!

We had a great family room that overlooked the pool and sea - didn't pay any extra for the sea view so I guess we were maybe just lucky. The room was modern, spacious and immaculately clean. Teenage children had the space nearest the balcony that was separated from our sleeping area by ornate sliding doors so we all had our own privacy. The bathroom was great with a very powerful shower and clean are towels provided every day. Bathrooms have a hairdryer but we learnt from previous holidays that the bathroom ends up being incredibly hot so took our own. The beds were made up every day and changed a couple of times a week. We couldn't fault the housekeeping and the maids were very friendly.

We arrived at lunchtime and although the sunbeds around the edge of the pool were taken, we still had no problem getting 4 beds at 1 p.m. People tend to put towels out early in the morning to reserve 'prime spots' but you won't struggle to find a bed further back on the grassy area and we actually found it was quieter and more relaxing here, plus its nearer to the pool bar. We hired towels for a deposit of 10 TND each which at the time was £2.85 so it's not worth taking up space in your case with your own towels as you can change your towels as often as you want and you get the deposit back at the end of your stay.

The all inclusive food was outstanding at every meal. Fantastic quality and a huge choice. I am the most adventurous diner out of our group and loved the seafood - king prawns, squid, octopus, grilled fish. The others never struggled to find something they liked - griddled chicken, steak, vegetable fritters, pasta, pizza, chips, cous cous, salad of every type. We were stuffed after every meal!

Breakfast is served until 9.45 but there is continental breakfast available until 12. Lunch is from 12.30 and dinner from 7. The pool side snack bar opens at 3 to serve paninis, waffles, crepes and pancakes.

There are 2 a la carte restaurants - you can visit one free of charge during your stay. The Mediterranean one serves at lunch time down near the pool area and the oriental one opens on an evening. We chose the oriental one and I loved it, although the other 3 weren't as impressed with the food on offer. But if you have fussy member in your party, you could always grab something for them from the all buffet restaurant that is next door. Saying that, we had a good meal and it was nice to be waited on rather than have to help yourself all the time.

The waiting staff in the restaurant were really helpful, bringing you endless drinks and after a day or so remembering what you normally have.

The staff at the terrace bar were really lovely too and great fun. They were very attentive, clearing tables instantly. We were a bit cross when half way through the holiday a man who we assumed to be the bar manager (think his name was Ridah B.R.) appeared one evening and began openly ordering the staff around in a rude and uncalled for manner. The waiting staff seemed on edge and really unhappy with the way he spoke to them. They had managed very well without him and his presence did nothing to improve the service. Other than that there were various staff who really made our holiday that little bit better - apologies if I spell your names wrong: Amal on reception, Maher and Sofien (amazing special coffee) at the pool bar and all the guys at the terrace bar.

2 of us went horse-riding, which although incredibly hot to have a lesson at 5 pm in the 30 degree heat, was definately worth it as we then went out for a 2 hour trek/gallop along the beaches early next morning. It was brilliant and I would definately recommend it. For the hours lesson and 2 hours trek it was around £90 for the 2 of us and worth every penny.

2 of us also had the half hour relaxing massage - fabulous! And only 50 TND each it was a bargain. At the time they were running a promotion that if you bought 2 massages you got a 3rd free so 3 massages for less than £30!

Other bits of info I think you should know:
There is an ATM in the hotel that accepts visa debit and credit cards (the reception staff told us you could only use credit cards)
Tips - you don't have to tip to get good service, but bearing in mind the amazing exchange rate, a couple of dinars here and there was nothing to us but was probably a great deal to the staff.
Service - in relation to the above point, we always find that 'hello', 'please' and 'thank you' is very much appreciated.
Birthdays - if you let the reception staff know if one of your group is celebrating, they will arrange a personalised cake.
Sunbeds - ask the pool guys and they will bring you cushions for the beds.
Day time entertainment - on offer every day other than Sunday. Staff asked us if we wanted to get involved with archery, yoga, aqua aerobics, face painting etc but didn't hassle us when we said no thanks.

We had a 10.30 am flight so had to leave the hotel just after 6 am. There was continental breakfast for us to help ourselves before we left.

We don't usually go back to the same hotel twice, but after visiting le Sultan, I think it is very likely that we will be returning. Great holiday, great hotel and fantastic memories.

This is our 3rd year that we spend a week at the Sultan and we find it a great family hotel. This year with all the renovation, it looks much better than usual. The rooms are modern and airy and the new outdoor loungy area is great. The entertainment for the kids is non stop and the staff is very friendly. The pool needs to be increased since at peak times (11am and 3pm) it becomes super crowded.

Room Tip: Room 361 has a great view and veranda yet away from the pool to be quiet.

We stayed at this hotel during the beginning of August for two weeks, and absolutely loved it!

We arrived at lunchtime and were greeted by friendly Reception staff, who gave us cool flannels and a refreshing drink. Just what you need in the heat.

After we checked in, we went up to our room. The room was very clean with a lovely super king sized bed which was comfortable. We had a family room and sea view. We were not disappointed.

Our children are Eleven and Nine, and both enjoyed their stay also. The pool was a big hit, as they love swimming and diving. We felt happy that our children were safe around the pool. Lifeguards are excellent, always watching and making sure everyone is safe. Infact, on a couple of occasions, they rescued children from drowning!! There was Entertainment for the children throughout the day and for all ages. E.g. water Polo for adults and children, mini golf, table tennis, archery water aerobics and even a play park with an indoor area for the kids club. The Entertainment team are brilliant. They remember your name and are friendly, and inform you throughout the day of all the activities that are taking place. Thanks Clara, Eesam, Hikall , and others, whose names I have forgotten. Sorry! The beach is lovely. Put your towels out early though, about sixish if your an early riser. Spaces get taken very quickly. There were people selling stuff, but they just walk past, unless you look at them and then they take this to mean you are interested. We were however, very upset to know some of the sellers were trying to sell baby Tortoises, and tell you to take them home in a cigarette box!
Other than this, it's beautiful! Lovely, clear and calm sea!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner. We really enjoyed all of the food. These people know how to cook! Buffet area and hot food serving areas. Clean and delicious food to suit all types! If you have a sweet tooth, you will really enjoy the desserts. Yes there were some flies, but after a while you get used to it.
The waiters are very attentive and friendly. The staff work soo hard, yet do their very best to provide an excellent service.

The Hotel is very clean. You could not fault it. It is a four star but should be a five! Even the toilets were immaculate. Inside and out. There was always someone cleaning.
I was a little concerned about insects and wasps etc,, but I think we only saw three wasps the whole time we were there. No cockroaches, bugs or even Mosquitos, or spiders!

The drinks were ok. Cocktails from the machines were alright, nothing special, but nice varieties.
I recommend the wine with cherry liquer!

Night time entertainment was good on certain nights. There was karoke, belly dancing, snake charmer, Russian dancing and more.
There is a lovely relaxing area outside, where you can chill out and sip your drink whilst being waited on hand and foot.

In the afternoons about three, pancakes, waffles, paniniis and icecream were served. Delicious! Don't diet until after you have been to this Hotel! The food is too scrummy!!

Thank you to all who looked after us during our stay.

We look forward to visiting again one day!

We spent a week here with another couple in the second week of July and I can say this was one of the best hotels we've have ever stayed in !!! And we've been to a few countries. I have never had such a relaxing holiday, and nothing was to much trouble for the staff, they were brilliant especially Hassin who always had a beaming smile for you , the pool and pool area was spotless and there was always sunbeds free and drinks brought to you by all the lovely waiters , who at the time were on Ramadan ! So it must of been hard for them serving drinks all day with an average 36 degree temperature, the food was brilliant and the rooms very clean always , the cleaning staff daily were wonderfull. The food was very very good also , I will definitely be going there again next year if not sooner! Thank you for a wonderfull stay .

High quality of service, always VERY helpful, which makes your trip very comfortable.
Standard of the hotel very good, rooms were clean, with nice bed, and balcony on the sea side.
I was surprised by the quality of the food, much better than average in this kind of hotels.
Children and families didn't disturb us during our stay.
We enjoyed activities such as spa, massage, catamaran and others.
I definitely recommend it for holidays for young couple in love or families.

We arrived in the early hours to be greeted by cool face towels and a light buffet, delighted thank you.
Our room was exactly as we requested with a lovely sea view, big enough for 4 of us. Bathroom looked tired but clean and adequate, toiletries and lovely soft clean white towels.
Maid every day, fresh towels on request, at least daily.
Restaurant ok, does get very noisy, not everyone is used to queuing, especially the young children who seem to run riot, we experienced many of the younger guests manhandling the food, the chefs and waiters don't seem to stop it. We tried going later but found that worse, ( why would you bring tired fractious children to dinner at 9?).
The food was good, better some days than others but we always found something we liked. Excellent salads & cold meats/cheeses. Many of the desserts were better than some Eastern European countries we've visited. We were all inclusive, but not as we usually find, the drinks are awful, seem to come ready made from a machine and taste the same, cocktails we found undrinkable. The only beer on offer was light and gassy. White & red wine will take the enamel off your teeth!, rose ok'ish. Only herbal tea on offer, and only at breakfast. Coffee I found too strong. Food is only available at certain times, outside these times you have to pay. Afternoon sandwiches & cakes is actually choice of 2 types of panini, waffles, pancakes or ice cream served from a bar by the pool and you can imagine the queue! Pancakes are worth waiting for though - lovely.
We found most of the pool waiters ok, but as we did not tip we were ignored or are orders did not arrive. If we went to the bar ourselves we seemed to wait until all the 'local' or French speakers were served, they just shouted their order and seemed to get it instantly, those of us wearing the 'all inclusive bands' often had to wait. We did mention this to the bar manager who was very apologetic but no improvement.
My daughter and I had taken her 2 teenage children away for a break, leaving husbands at home, this seem to affect the way we were treated, maybe a cultural thing but as 2 women alone we often felt ignored by the predominantly male staff, except one afternoon when I went back to our room with the children leaving my daughter to finish sunbathing, when she was approached by a bar waiter and asked if she would like to go out for coffee later!! For a women in her mid thirties I suppose she should have felt flattered but she did not, it put a nasty tinge on the holiday and she never went anywhere alone again!
If you want a sunbed, get up by 7 and reserve or you will not get one, we found the local Tunisian visitors (there are many of them) are up by 6, in the pool by 7 and all sunbeds gone. It is very noisy by the pool, the beach is better, sea lovely and warm, clear water. Beach staff lovely. Towel and sunbed mattress man really nice, will always carry your mattress for you and try and find a sunbed if you are late down.
Would we go again, No. It's not for us, but if you have young children, don't mind the noise, and have your partner with you (male) you will probably love it.

Room Tip: Always go for a sea view, worth the money.

Our first trip to Tunisia and will not be the last. The hotel is situated in a quiet location - so if you are looking for local bars etc this may not be for you. Although there are sufficient bars within the hotel.
We were allocated two adjacent rooms overlooking the table tennis table and the nearly completed, sister hotel ( I am told, but cannot be sure, this will be a 5 star property and opens in September). Fortunately there wasnt any noise.
As Hannah B mentioned the staff were amazing - a special mention to Said who looked after all of our libation needs and also to Maheer who always had a smile on his face.
Food was plentiful and varied and, during our stay, we didnt have any issues in obtained a sun lounger - although I understand that others may have has issues after we left due)
I was somewhat appehensive about this holiday but am pleased to say that it was probably the best hotel I have stayed in abroad - and beats most of the ones I've stayed in in the UK - free wifi also kept the youngest occupied

One little tip, as this was not mentioned by our tour operator: the hotel offers beach towels for use aroung the pool - please check direct with the hotel. With various weight limits now imposed by most tour operators - leaving you beach towel at home can allow you to take some extra luggage

Please also be reminded that upon arrival in Tunisia you are expected to complete an entry card - make sure you have a pen with you as this was not mentioned by our travel agent nor on the flight.

If you are looking for a relaxing quiet holiday at a stunning hotel, in Tunisia, then you would be hard pressed to find another that matched le Sultan
