“Almost good”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

We have just returned from a 11 night holiday here and although the hotel is good and staff attentive. We had a couple of problems which were sorted out very quickly but we felt let down by the Thomson rep Tracey she gave us misleading information on trips and times didn't carry out things she told us at the welcome meeting and was generally quite abrupt and unprofessional. Overall this is a good beach/pool holiday but no where to really walk to outside the hotel.

Room Tip: Book a sea view if you like to sit in the sun on your balcony or you will be overlooking the car par...

The Hotel is nice with everything you could need within its secure compound. It is clean, safe and the staff are friendly, if a little too friendly at times but they're just doing their job.

The majority of guests when we went were either young couples looking for a cheap all inclusive holiday in the sun or the elderly there to relax and enjoy the nice weather and the two groups integrated fairly well. The nationality mix of the hotel was dominated by the europeans with a few arabians and some subsaharan guests as well. If you like people watching its a fantastic hotel for it with some hilarious characters about.

The staff are very friendly and incredibly keen for you to participate in as many things as possible. This can get annoying though as they don't give up but most activities were enjoyable anyway even if you do feel as if you've been dragged along to them. The waiter however was a very sly looking man who seemed to expect to be tipped before he would even lift a finger rather than try to impress you with good service and then get given a tip he deserved. The cleaner was excellent and put flowers and leaves in our room which was a nice touch.

The Hotel has a beachfront area and although the sand is beautiful and very soft I wouldn't recommend spending much time there, unless you like beaches strewn with litter and rammed with sweaty men with a loose grasp on English trying to sell you fake watches and bracelets. Avoid anyone trying to get you on a camel or horse as the animals are treated appallingly and they have horrendous sores where their chains, that look as if they have been on for years as rust is all over the faces of the animals, lie. One way to keep them away is to tell them that you have allergies. The sea water is clean however and there are designated swimming areas that are watched by lifeguards.

The entertainment is ok you need to be very drunk to enjoy some of the 'comedy' acts as jokes often lose humour as they are told in several different languages. The cheating sketch is very funny though. One night an external 'stunt man' comes in wearing his pyjamas and performs 'risky stunts'. SPOILER ALERT!!! He stinks and his snakes mouth is sewn shut with a small gap at the front for the tongue to flicker out of. The animation team has one guy who can dance really well but his talents aren't exploited as much as they should be as he barely features in the dance acts. Bouba is hilarious and so is the lead guy James. The quiz night was one of the best ones.

The food is ok there's always something to eat but the majority of things on offer look fairly dodgy and their lack of popularity shows as they are put out time and time again. For the majority of the holiday someone was ill and severe diarrhoea and or vomiting is almost certain to happen to you at some point during your visit. There is always chips, which are very nice, and either beef steak, chicken breast or turkey breast. The Italian restaurant is a bit disappointing culinarily, it is just anything vaguely Italian from the main restaurant in a smaller buffet. But it is a nice change of scenery, it's much quieter and there are no queues unlike the main restaurant. The majority of the drinks were good but there is only one beer and it tastes a bit like Stella so its ideal if you like Stella but the lack of variety gets annoying after a while and you'll see even the burliest of men sipping on the odd cocktail now and then. The barmen were very nice and very enthusiastic and willing to make your drink as strong as you'd like once you've ordered a few drinks and given them a tip (5 dinar a night which is about £2). If you're underage and you like drinking don't worry anyone can get a silver wristband, they don't seem to care about that.

The actual hotel looks very nice and almost palatial at first glance however on closer inspection the building is littered with botched repairs many of the mosaic designs lack symmetry and a few things remained broken for the whole stay. The lifts were very touch and go throughout with lighting problems and the doors not closing properly on numerous occasions. If you want water in your room it is free but you have to order it at reception in the morning which is a bit odd and is something the hotel should maybe change. The reception area and bar is an indoor smoking area so if you smoke that must be nice. The Hotel has a large conference room in which they streamed all the world cup games so you won't need to miss a match. The reception staff are brilliant, always smiling and happy to help with anything. I broke the key during our stay and didn't get charged for it so don't worry about being overcharged for minor breakages. The compound is secure and all the staff seemed very trustworthy, the only place you're likely to get robbed is in the shop in the hotel when you go to buy the ridiculously overpriced snacks!!

The room was pleasant with a large balcony and lots of space. It had a sofa, 2 single beds pushed together, a well equipped bathroom, plenty of storage space and a large dresser with a TV above it. The TV only had two English channels, one was BBC world news and the other is a German movie channel that shows movies with subtitles underneath in German. If you are German however there is plenty to watch as most channels seemed to be in German. The rooms are equipped with a safe that is free to use however, I can't say ours was one of them, but apparently some of the safes were code safes and had the code written on the side of them.

The pool isn't heated which is a slight problem in the morning in June but it always warmed up to a nice temperature by about 1pm. The water was very clean and had chlorine in it. The pool itself is massive and has two hot tub areas with bubbles coming out in them. It also has submerged sun loungers which are nice on a hot day. The pool has a sun bed reservation policy which was implemented during our stay and enforced from the start. You can't reserve a sun lounger before 7:30, all towels were removed from those that were reserved but left unattended before then. If you do however feel that poolside loungers and a large parasol are essential you can tip the pool boys and they'll sort you out. The pool has a swim up bar which is good but you can't get slushes there which is a bit annoying. Upon arrival guests are issued with towel cards that entitle you to one towel per card and you can exchange your towels for either fresh towels or the cards to be returned whenever you wish.

The surrounding area is not very nice with a very run down high street and its pretty dead. It is a short walk to get to it but the taxis are so cheap and its so hot that its worth taking a taxi wherever you want to go. There are carriages all over the place being pulled by horses that would be put out of their misery in the UK, incredibly skinny and with very odd posture, that the men seem to feel the need to whip half to death to get them to move an inch. If you want souvenirs then I can recommend getting a taxi to a shop called JOYS, it has everything from key rings to arab costumes and shisha pipes. There are a few souvenir shops in the hotel reception area, so leaving the complex isn't essential.

The leisure facilities are good with lots of things to do during the day, most of which were good fun. The best activity was the Archery its fun, relaxing and quite competitive at the top end. The beach facilities however let the hotel down a bit the man in charge is very lazy and is reluctant to let you use them, the slightest breath of wind or wave on the water and it is deemed too dangerous to let any guest use them. If you want to use the sailing boats you need to pay for a lesson (it costs 25 dinar roughly £9) in which he takes you out to check you know what to do then lets you use them for half an hour a day afterwards if you pass the test he sets you. If you can't sail then the man will take you out sailing for 25 dinar per half hour. If you decide that you do want to use the beach facilities I'd advise trying him in the morning as it seemed he prefers to sleep all afternoon in his hut or do DIY jobs after lunch. French boules is also available and has a very popular league that runs daily. Water polo is also played daily and an aqua aerobics session is also available, depending on popularity up to twice a day. They run a stretching class which looks a bit like yoga or pilates. Dance classes from various cultures are available poolside in the afternoon. The animation team run a 'crazy game' everyday before lunch which is like a boys versus girls pool based challenge that is entertaining both to partake in and to watch. There are excursions available but at an additional cost.

In conclusion this review may sound fairly negative at times but a lot of things are very good about the hotel and my stay was very enjoyable. The staff are nice on the whole and the facilities are very useable and accessible. If you're looking for a reasonably priced holiday in the sun and a decent hotel to stay in I can recommend the RIU Marco Polo Club Hotel Yasmine Hammamet.

Room Tip: Don't bother to pay extra for a sea view, its not worth it, we got one without paying and if you...

Having just returned from a 14 night Holiday at the Riu Marco Polo, via Thompson, I have to say that I shall be re-booking another summer holiday here for 2015. My in-laws have been here 4 times.

We arrived at the hotel 4 hours late due to a delay at Gatwick, however we were greeted with open arms by the Reception staff who has some lovely drinks ready and waiting for us. The head receptionist quickly gave us an overview on how to get towels, water and sort out our safes and then we were chaperoned to our rooms by the porters.

ROOM
We had room a very large family room. 4 beds, 2 bathrooms and extremely spacious. The kids had their own separate room with their 2 beds, which was still within the same room . The room was on the ground floor and virtually 1 min walk from the edge of the pool. The room was very clean and fresh.

It had air conditioning and a ceiling fan, however after about 5 days I noticed that the aircon did not seem as effective anymore. I asked reception to come and check it out, and their maintenance guy told us that it was working fine, so not sure if it needed regassing or if the hotel can control/limit the air con. Regardless of this the room was still cool enough at night.

POOL
If you want a pool lounger/space by the pool you need to be getting a space at 7.30am on the dot. Some people were getting down to the pool at 6am and reserving beds with towels and leaving but this has now been stopped and you can not reserve a bed until 7.30am when breakfast starts. You can get to the pool earlier to get a space but you MUST be sat on the bed, you cannot place a towel on the bed and leave and come back, otherwise your towel will be removed. We were getting down to the pool at 6am, and as time went on it got busier and busier at this time. Regardless of all of this there is more than enough beds and space to go round for all guests. Naturally the later you get to the pool, the further away you will find a space.

The pool is massive. Which is fantastic as it never seemed to get full regardless of how many people were in it. It has a pool bar and if you can I would suggest looking for Tormen and Walid who are THE best pool bar barmen you can ask for. Very attentive and service with a smile.

Although this hotel is all inclusive, I would suggest bringing some money for tipping waiters, bar staff and cleaners. Very little money goes a hell of a long way (more about this later) but tipping the pool bar and other barmen meant that we NEVER had to queue up for drinks and alot of the times the drinks were delivered to us! You only need to tip say 5 or 10 Tunisian Dinnars every couple of days, which is pence to us but alot to the staff, ad you will find that drinks are poured even before you ask for them. Alot of people say "why tip when I have paid for an all inclusive holiday". TO these people I say stop being tight and by spending very little money on tips your holiday experience will be 10 times better and easier.....trust me!

There is also an indoor pool however this absolutely freezing and the room is unlit and therefore a bit dark and dingy.

EXCURSIONS - SELLERS BY THE POOL
You will see that from approx 10am 4-5 people from a local excursion company will walk around the pool all day to sell you a myriad of excursions. They are in no way invasive or pushy but what I would say is this: -

Quad bikes - this is a MUST!!! Thompson do not offer this excursion so it is exclusive to Yasmine Quads and is worth EVERY penny. You will have barter for the price we got as we know the operator very well (ask for Omar who walks around the pool everyday all day!) but I believe the standard prices are 90 Dinnar/person for the 250cc quad and 75 Dinnar/person for the 125cc quad. The fantastic quad bike drive around the countryside and off road tracks last approx 2hrs. We went on the trip that takes you to the very beautiful hills and sites of the American WW2 tanks (lots of pics online if you want to have a look). I suggest lots of sun cream and bring water and cameras with you as the your guide will take photos of you.

Pirate Ship - This 2hr trip around the coastline in replica Pirate Ship is offered by both the poolside sellers and Thompson. I strongly suggest you check with your provider for prices and we found Thompson to be far cheaper than the poolside seller (Ali). We originally bought 5 tickets from Ali at 200 Dinnar only to be told by our rep that she could offer the same trip for 130 Dinnar. We therefore asked for our money back and booked with Thompson. Its a party boat with lots of music, dancing and acrobatic pirates. You get a free meal but all drinks have to be paid for (No alcohol is sold or permitted on this boat). Again sun cream and a hat is a must and bring your trunks as the ships anchors down for 30 mins lunch and you are allowed to jump off the side for a swim. Kids are welcome but my child found it a bit boring and way too hot!

BREAKFAST/LUNCH/DINNER/FOOD
I wont bore you with times etc but food is generally very good. You will find that some days there is more fish than meat and vice versa, but if there is nothing in any of the eating locations you do not like then there is something seriously wrong with you! You will find that some people moan about the food on here but I think they are just picking at straws as there is nothing wrong with the food - regardless of how fussy you are with food there will be something you will like. What I would say is that after a week, the food does tend to get samey and boring.

There is an "Asian" restaurant. Its ok, but I would only suggest booking a table for Saturday as the restaurant manager on Saturday seems to manager the staff better than the week manager. We had a terrible meal and service during the week but the 2 Saturdays we ate there the service and food was amazing.

I would also suggest staying clear of the main restaurnat at lunch time and instead have you lunch at the small location at the rear of the pool. Its less busy and the outside eating location is much cooler and quieter. Breakfast is available form 7.30am - 10am but again stay clear until at least 8.30am, as its packed at 7.30am.

I am not sure what it is with some people but they find it compulsory to get in early and stack their plates with food, that they ultimately will not eat, in fear of losing out. To those people I say GET A LIFE!!! WE ARE NOT AT WAR AND FOOD IS NOT RATIONED!! There are some seriously greedy people who will stop at nothing to get food (push in line, get their desert at the same time as their lunch/dinner and some will even bring Tupperware boxes to fill up....very very very sad! Regardless of this, food is in abundance so do not worry!!

BARS
There are 3-4 bars. We used the pool bar during the day and the main bar in reception in the evening, but still sat outside. For some strange and unknown reason, the bar outside where the evening entertainment is, gives very poor service and feels very clicky. Again, tipping waiters and bar staff means that you can walk up to a bar and your drink will already be poured, so we had no issues whatsoever, even at the busiest of times.

You can sit in the main reception and drink but smoking is permitted inside the reception so you will find it very warm and smokey. I am not sure why this hotel permits smoking inside when there is more than enough seats and tables outside to drink and smoke at. This is one of the hotel's very few bad points.

DAYTIME/EVENING ENTERTAINMENT
The hotel has a fantastic entertainment team called the Animation Team. During the day they organise events in and around the pool and beach such as water polo, water aerobics, archery and other water related funny games such as Gladiators and Surf Board Races in the pool which are very funny. In the evenings they perform things such as bingo, kids discos, snake charming, comedy and dancing acts both inside the entertainment room or outside in the main seating area. Mamadou, Leo and all the other are fantastic and very good with all the kids.

However, the entertainment gets very repetitive and so does the music which can get boring and annoying, especially if you are there for more than a week. This is the hotel's other bad point - evening entertainment in the hotel can be boring and at times it has to be said that it can be a bit Caravan Club House or Butlins type entertainment, which is just not to my taste and everyone else's. This means that there can be very little to do in the evenings. There is a games area with Pool Tables, Arcades etc but this can also get boring after a week.

With this said the Animation Team are very good and very attentive and will always come and talk to the children by the pool or in the evening.

RESIDENT PHOTOGRAPHERS - STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!!!!!
All I can say is...STAY AWAY from the resident photographers. They spend all day and night walking around the complex taking photos of everyone, including children, with hope of selling you some of the photos which can be viewed and purchased in the main lobby.

Firstly, I was not happy that these photographers store all their weekly/monthly photos on a PC, for all to view, in the main lobby especially as they had photos of all children. At no time did I see them ask anyone for permission to take and store photos of them.

Secondly, the tall skinny one is extremely pushy and aggressive. My wife and I were viewing photos he had taken of my young daughter, he came over to ask if we wanted to purchase them and when we said no he said "well dont waste my f******g time then". It was the only time during the holiday that I was close to putting my fist through someone's face, especially as he was this aggressive infront of my wife and children. I strongly suggest you stay away form these people, and the machine with all the photos as they hang around there waiting to pounce and sell. If I had had more time I would have reported them to the hotel manager, for the aggression shown towards us and the face that the are freely taking and storing photos of young children with no permission whatsoever. To add to this they are very expensive so just take nice photos of your own and save yourself the time and money.

TIPPING
As previously advised I strongly suggest you tip the waiters, barmen and cleaners throughout your stay. Having tipped them all myself, my room was immaculate everyday, the drinks were poured, ready and delivered to me at the poolside or to my table everyday and all day, and service within the restaurant was fantastic, and I NEVER had any trouble finding a clean and ready table for breakfast as the waiter we tipped made sure of this every morning.

Make sure you tip in Dinnar as the staff are not permitted to change Euros, Sterling etc at the hotel which means their tips are pointless. I tipped my favorite waiter and barman 5-10 Dinnars every 2-3 days. This is £2-4, that's it! I tipped the cleaner once per week. You have to remember that this staff earn approx £50/mth, so a £2 tip goes a long way.

So, in short the hotel and staff are all fantastic. Do not listen to any of the other people's comments about security and the male staff at the hotel. Nothing went missing from our rooms, not even items left on show like phones and ipods. The room had a digital safe also. To the people that had items "go missing" I would suggest looking a bit harder as theft does not occur in this hotel. It's not worth the staff's jobs to steal.

The male staff ARE NOT pervy towards females whatsoever, but instead friendly and attentive to all people.

The hotel is spacious, clean and not too big that it feels like a massive complex, but large enough for it to remain a close knit community. All the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and the reception staff are very helpful at all times.

This is the perfect place for a family holiday. If instead you prefer somewhere with less children then choose another hotel or come here during term time. Although I came with my children, I am not keen on lots of children at hotels as it can be become rowdy, however this was not the case at the Marco Polo.

Wifi is free in the main lobby and reception, and can be connected to at some areas around the pool, but is not available in the rooms. To the people moaning about no WiFi in rooms, why don't you ready the hotel's website which clearly states free WiFi in the lobby only..then you may not need to moan a bout a non-existent problem....

If I would change or suggest changes for the hotel I would suggest

1 - Remove smoking from the main lobby and reception area
2 - A more varied day and evening entertainment programe with varying music to avoid repetitiveness for people staying for more than 1 week
3 - Remove the resident photographers as they are a waste of space and reflect badly on such a beautiful hotel.
4 - Offer Room Service at an additional charge

I will most definitely be returning to this hotel in 2015. Myself, my wife and children loved it!!!

We were here from 11th - 18th June and it was bloody brilliant. At first we got put in the wrong room because we paid for a sea view and our room was facing a different hotel. We soon got moved into a fabulous room that looked over the pool and a sea view to the left and you could see the marina too.
I was a bit worried about the food after reading the reviews on here but I thought it was good, with a good selection of everything, it wasn't the same every day and it was all fresh and tasted good. People might say they have a poor excuse of sausages and bacon (I admit they both had the texture of a frankfurter but I wasn't fussed) but it's a Musilm country, what do you expect?
The people were lovely, some of the nicest people I've ever met. I was worried they would be expecting tips all the time but to be honest I wanted to give them tips because the service was so good and they make it personal.
Don't be worried about going outside the hotel, we were really worried before we came about it not being very nice out the complex but I would definitely recommend it. The people are friendly, maybe a bit pushy in the shops but just say no if you don't want something, and haggle as much as you can! As soon as you walk out the shop they say no no you can have it for your price! We even went out for a drink on our last night in the Mambo Lounge just down the road and a gentleman came over and gave us the wifi code and some nibbles to eat!
Make the most of the fact the town is right next to you! No need to get a bus!
All in all, it was absolutely fab, couldn't fault it. At the end of the day, a holiday is what you make it. We got stuck in and done loads of activities. It's making me sad thinking I'm not there right now! Definitely going back in the future.

Room Tip: We asked for a seaview, it was more of a pool view with a bit of a seaview but just as good! If you...

I stayed at marco polo with my girlfriend 11th June - 22nd June.
We had a brilliant time!
There are alot of things I wish I would have known before I went which I didn't see in any reviews.
For example, there is no bacon at breakfast (seems obvious in hindsight as it's a Muslim country), also I would recommend taking sachets of brown sauce because there is none! There are no cook to order omelettes like most places I've been. The food overall is good. There's something for everybody. The welcome meeting is just a sales pitch for excursions but I highly recommend friguia park! We fed meerkats, elephants, deer, ox, zebras and more. We got to hold a lion cub which was lucky for us as soon he will be too old.
We did the pirate ship too which I recommend booking with your rep as it's cheaper than booking with the local company that is
based within the hotel.

The animation team were excellent. Highly entertaining, enthusiastic and always busy.

There are plenty of daily sport activities such as archery and you can also hire any non motorised water sport equipment such as kayaks / pedalos for free. (not explained by rep or hotel, we had to find out ourselves)

One issue is the fact that you have to be up extremely early in order to get a sun lounger.if you don't get down before 6.30 you've no chance. This makes it tiring as the evening entertainment doesn't start until 10am and lasts until 1pm.
Yani, abdoul and the lovely anissa from the animation team are brilliant and always have time for you. They all do in fact but they were my favourite. Also the waiters and bar staff are all equally great. Tip the waiters a few times and they will see to your every need! Lofti the barman makes excellent cocktails!
You have to order your water everyday which is strange and something I think they should rethink.
So to conclude, spotlessly clean, good variety of food, great entertainment, plenty of activities, plenty of excursions and kind, polite and helpful staff.
We will definitely return.
