This is my return to this hotel with a group of people. My first visit was a winter sun break on my own. Check in is smooth but because the hotel was busy, we did wait quite a long time for our cases and with hindsight, will in future take my own to the room rather than wait for them to be taken to our room (there is a lift so no problem with getting to the higher floors with cases). The hotel has not changed although this time round (May rather than November) was busier and very noticeable around the pool and in the restaurant. We had a good time although a few of us came down with a tummy bug. As a traveller on my own to this hotel previously, was OCD careful about cleaning my teeth with bottled water, no ice in the drinks and not eating any salad and was fine. This time round was slightly lax and suffered so can only blame myself! The food is good quality. Those who complain of nothing to choose from must live on bread and chips. We did eat in the Italian one evening and were disappointed to find it was also a buffet rather than sit down waiter service. The rooms are cleaned to a high standard and the rest of the hotel is kept very clean.

We stayed at the Marco Polo as a family of four for ten nights ... The staff and entertainment team where all excellent throughout the hotel, nothing was too much trouble. Food for us was fine staying just ten nights but I would imagine after 14 nights or so you could get bored.
Foods range from basic pizza through to local dishes such as "Asslama" (cous cous with Lamb potatoes and carrots, very nice indeed). I believe alot of people who have complained about the hotel are the types that pay 3 or 4 star money but expect five star service.... Sadly it does not work that way now does it ... This is a good basic 4 star hotel . The beach was clean and tidy and sailing and kayaking pedelos are all inclusive with First choice. If your new to sailing you can have a half an hour lesson for as little as 25 Dinar.
(approx 3 dinar to the pound at present... 2.89 dinar). Tips are never expected but always gratefully received. We tipped 2 dinar for breakfast nothing for lunch buffet and 3 to 5 dinar at night. The maid 3 dinar a day .... Very little in out money but alot locally. If your planning to go on the originally advertised Sahara dessert / Star wars two day tour you might have some problems. Due to recent fighting on the border all trips have been cancelled... HOWEVER.. At the hotel we where able to book the tour through the german Tui holiday rep. The tour is of course in German so unless your really keen to go as we where you might have problems... we where very lucky and quickly made friends on the bus so the germans where happy to translate. The whole tour was amazing... Camel rides into the Sahara / star wars on both days 1970's homestead and Phanthom Menace village on day two. Jeep tour and much more. We only went for Star Wars but the hotel , local people and whole country won us over.... Would I go back ? NO ... But if your lookng for a different holiday from Spain / Turkey or Greece this is the place to go... If you want 5 star Caribbean go there and pay the money .Dont complain about this hotel... Totally reccomended. Thanks to everyone we meet . One small critism. SUNBEDS ! If you want a bed around the pool youll need to stake you claim by 730 - 0800 ... IM NOT JOKING ! All beds where gone by 0800 everyday . Not so much of a problem for us as we like the beach but be warned...

We had a great holiday at this hotel in July 2014 and we have booked to return next month. The staff are friendly and cannot do enough to help. The entertainment team work very hard and I applaud them for their never ending enthusiasm. All the staff work very hard. The hotel is clean and well decorated. A wide variety of food is on offer every day and all needs are catered for. I cannot wait to see my favorite waiter Mohammed Triaa who makes me and my family smile every time we see him. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. Go see for yourselves - you will not be disappointed.

I stayed here in June , I went with some friends and had an amazing time, the reception staff were so helpful and on arrival we had welcome drinks in the show room then escorted to are rooms ( which were very clean and well presented ) they were cleaned every day and flowers left on our beds.we didn't have to lift a finger on our whole stay the staff were so amazing and helpful especially round the pool , sun beds went quick so u do have to get up by 7am to reserve but sun is out by then so that's a plus. I decided to stay an extra 3 days and they were so good and let me stay in my friends room for no extra charge , a massive thank you to James and the animation team ( mario , yani, bubba, joker) they were fab and were entertaining from 10am till the end of the nite show , which was different every nite.
Would recommend this hotel to everyone , been back since to another hotel and nothing compares, its was pure luxury,will defiantly return again . Thanks for making my first stay in Tunisia an amazing one xxx

Just back from a 2 week stay at Marco Polo hotel. Overall view is that the hotel is fab, staff can't do enoughfor you and we had glorious weather. Special mention must go to the animation team, particularly Leo, Abdul, Mario & Mamado for their warmth & kindness shown
The bar staff were very attentive & always happy,dealing with a constant demands for drinks throughout the day
The hotel was spotlessly clean and was cleaned every day
There was a wide variety of food to choose from daily, but the same food daily over the 2 week period
Lots of entertainment day & night, together with organised excursions. We did the quad bike tour which was fantastic & Omar was so engaging & funny
Would definitely go back & make sure that we did more trips

Me & my partner spent a week this July at Marco Polo. The hotel is like a palace, the rooms are kept to a high standard and the pool is beautiful!

STAFF
We stayed whilst ramadam was going on, can not express how well the animation team do considering they are on the go ALL day and night! The men from the team are fantastic and never walk by without a smile or a chat, the two girls were quite arrogant however and didn't really ever give you the time of day. The bar staff are amazing! a tip does go a long way, Ahmed, Faouzi & Ramsey are the nicest people I have ever met and endlessly bought us special cocktails they had made, they really did make our stay extra special! The reception staff are average, there customer service could be a lot better.

FOOD
The food is great! there literally is something for everyone. Even if you are extremely fussy and don't like what they have to offer the chef will go out of his way to make you something else. There is your standard buffet restaurant which we preferred but there is also an Italian and Asian restaurant that you can go to if you book 24hrs in advance with the head waiter. We tried the Italian restaurant and I really didn't think it was that great so it put us off trying the Aisian restaurant, the buffet restaurant has everything you need & they even made me a cake and sung happy birthday to me for my 21st!

ENTERTAINMENT
Read a few bad reviews about this before visiting but the entertainment is carried out by the same staff who entertain you during the day and they don't half do a great job! we got a variety of entertainment during our one week stay from very silly comedy, dance acts, bingo, karaoke and on the last night a very dangerous act by two men walking on glass, breathing fire laying on nails etc, iv'e seen a lot worse entertainment at other hotels so I think some reviews have been harsh.

EXCURSIONS
We tried two.. 'Capital sights' A very long day, a lot of travelling but worth it if your into history! you visit a museum of mosaics which is amazing at first but very boring when an hour later your still looking at the same style of art just different pictures. Next is to the blue and white village which is by far the best part of the trip and you even get to look round someone's house which is amazing! Lots of little stalls to buy from too. Then on to a stuffy restaurant with a set menu for lunch, your given a quiche starter, chicken and rice for main and a slice of cake for pud, nothing special. Then you go to a short visit to Carthage, beautiful scenery and great for taking pictures and lastly to the Roman Baths which is great but by this time your too hot and tired and don't seem to appreciate it as much. We don't regret going but wouldn't advise to our age range (21 & 25) unless you love history.

'Friju Animal Park & Zulu' I'm very disappointed First Choice offer this as an excursion, none of the animals are well kept and some are left with no water and no shade & when we visited on a day that was well over 35 degrees it was unbearable to think they had no way to escape the heat which me being a huge soppy animal lover reduced me to tears. We waited over half an hour over the scheduled sea lion show time and still nothing happened which was a waste, the only plus was that I fed a giraffe which was amazing. The Zulu African dancing show at the end of the visit was fantastic! which did make up (money wise) for the rubbish animal park experience. The restaurant is lovely and cool, again the menu is set but much more appetizing than the above trip and they keep you topped up with water, coke and wine all the way through whilst African and Tunisian dancers keep you entertained whilst you eat.

SURROUNDINGS
All over the streets you see horse and carriages. If you have a heart don't go for a ride on them. You can see the ribs of all the horses its very upsetting to see, the same applies with camels, the way they treat them is a disgrace. The hotel has it's own beautiful little beach but these poor animals are on there too and your pestered by men trying to get you to go for a ride so for us that massively put us off and we stayed away which is a shame as they offered some great water sports. There are a few shops just down the road but they all have the same in so once you've been in one you may as well not go any further as they don't have much to offer, a little market was bought to our hotel on our last day and we were really chuffed with that as they had more than what we had seen anywhere else.

OVERALL
Can not fault the hotel or staff, they will do anything to please you and the hotel is kept to a very high standard! would definitely visit again if we could get it for the same price but would maybe stay in the hotel and avoid venturing out or going on the beach next time. If you want to just chill out and get treat like royalty it's perfect!

We arrived at the Riu Marco Polo on Sunday 20th July - stayed for one week.
(Outbound - 6.15am with Return flight - 19.35)

* Flights *
Both flights were ok; altho on our outbound journey I was moved 12 rows back from my partner - we will be requesting a refund as we paid for our seats. Also our outward journey was delayed by 1hr 20 mins as an extra case was loaded onto our flight in error. Apart from this, both flights were good and were under 3 hours..!!

* Enfidah Airport - tipping porters !! *
On arrival our suitcases were taken by an airport porter and we were escorted to our coach for transfer to our hotel. This was fine - however do have some change with you to give to the porter at the airport. £1 is enough - this is just under 3 dinars. (2.900) .....dont let them tell you any different - our porter tried for more than £1.

* Money *
Tunisia has a closed currency - so you cannot take money in or out again when you leave. Take your English money with you in cash to exchange at your hotel. We took £120 and initially exchanged £80 - this gave us 230 dinar, which was more than enough for the week we stayed. We did not go on many excursions as were only staying for a week so could definitely have spent more than we did.

* Coach Transfer *
The hotel is approx. 35 mins from the airport - the journey was ok, did not take too long and in the heat after just arriving we were pleased of that! The country is poor so be prepared for that. The views are interesting - lots of rubbish scattered around, people selling things at the roadside.... you really see on he coach journey how poor Tunisia is when compared to the resort. Totally different!

* Check in / Reception *
This was short - again a porter is waiting to escort youto your room. As you dont yet have Tunisian Dinar make sure you have £1 to tip..... We stayed in room 3029 and found our own way to our room as all porters were showing other guests to theirs. This is ok, do not feel like you have to wait!

* Rooms*
Our room was larger than expected, also clean & tidy. Our maid (Sonia) made every effort to make the room look fab every day..... I would advise leaving a tip on your first day to ensure an even better service. We left 10 dinar (approx. £3) and were very pleased with the room each day.

* Other guests *
The hotel attracts a wide mix of nationalities - as well as British guests there were; French, German, Italian, Russian & Dutch guests also...... Some polite and friendly, but also, very occasionally, quite rude too !! Do not take too much notice - we met some lovely people and gained some pointers on some of the excursions, which we did not do, for future reference!

* Food *
We both enjoyed the food served - there was a wide variety each day and as long as you are willing to try the different dishes out you will have no problem finding something to eat at all meals. My partner highly reccommends any fish dish, meat dishes, paella.....well everything! I was not so daring, but still ate well preferring to stick with soup, pizzas, chips, pastas and salads - how very english of me !! (sorry!)

* Pool *
Huge pool - stunning and much larger that we expected. There were lots of sun loungers. However to ensure you get a lounger you do need to get up very early, 6am on some days - even though reservations should not be done until the pool area opens at 7.30am. We were downstairs around 8am each day and were able to get a space each time - not always in the best spot but it was fine for us!

* Staff *
Very helpful and friendly - from reception, to the maids and cleaners everyone said 'morning' and 'hello' when passing which is a nice touch. Our favourite barman was at the Carthage Bar in the main reception where the drinks and service was by far the best!

* Tipping *
This is simply something which you should accept and go with !! - for me personally, I found it quite awkward and left it to my partner. However it was really not too painful and ensured that the service received was just that little bit better. Wages are extremley low and tipping is an essential part of the way things work there - just 2 or 3 dinars every now and then with the most kept for the start of your holiday (to the maid/cleaner) and at the end to perhaps a waiter of server in the restaurant.

* Alcohol / drinks / bars *
The alcohol is NOT watered down - we saw the barman open new bottles on numerous occasions and were tipsy from the awesome cocktails a few times..... Of course tipping your favourtie barman helps to make the drinks even better and ensures that you are frequently replinished with drinks - lovely :) !!

* Excursions / Trips *
-We spoke to a few of the salesmen wandering around the hotels grounds selling various trips and excursions. In the end we chose to go on only one trip as we were only staying for one week.
>Pirate Ship<
This trip only takes up half a day-from 9am til 1pm and cost us about £15 (40 Dinars) each. We were collected from outside the hotel and driven 2mins round the corner to the Marina-could have easily walked to the ship, which would not have been a problem. Once on board we found a seat outside and waited for around 25mins for the ship to fill up. It was very hot and seemed to take ages before we finally set sail! Once we had left, the entertainment began - music was played and the pirates began their show, all very good and very entertaining. The entertainment was good, you are encouraged to join in so be prepared for that.....!!
Water provided for FREE ONLY was in small plastic cups from an 'office style' water bottle dispenser; other drinks (small bottles of water, cans, beer) were charged, costing from 1.500 dinar each. Also included was lunch, at around 11am - this was rice, fish, salad and watermelon - everything was clean and appeared to have been kept well.
Shortly after food the ship stopped and we were able to go into the sea for a swim - this was awesome, and part of the reason why we chose the trip in the first place! We were allowed to swim for approx 30 mins before being called back on board.
Our only complaint was that we were told (by the salesman at the hotel) not to take any money with us on the trip - so we didnt - however be aware that they do try to sell you various souvenirs; a bandana (10 dinar each) , a CD of the music played (13 dinar) and photos (20 dinar each) ....The pirates also go round on the return journey with a 'hat' collecting tips - not too sure if all the pirates did this but the one who approaced us was not too polite about asking for money either and as we had literally taken no money I felt quite uncomfortable that we could not leave something..... :o eeeeek !!! We spoke to the salesmen when back at the hotel and he did say again not to take money - we did just say that it would have been good to have been made aware of the souviners and tipping though, for which he apologised!
Overall the trip was well worth the money paid so would definitely recommend it for something fun to do and a fab swim in the ocean.
>Quad Biking<
-We chatted to a family who went on the quad bike excursion - they loved it! We would have definitely done this if we had been staying longer.
>Zoo trip<
-Another couple we spoke to went on this trip and said it was lovely seeing the animals, being able to feed them and take photos.

* Hotel Photographs / Photograper *
At the hotel there were various photographers wanting to take take photos - again these are not free! The best advice here is to be clear from the start with them. Ask how much the photos are (Turns out they were 20 Dinars each for normal size) Say you don't want to buy photos if you do not want them and do not let the talk you into taking the set of pics. Whilst I found it amusing my other half hated every second!! - it felt like it was our wedding day. The photographer was pushy and really didn't want to give us any time to come back and look through the pics so we could decide which ones and even if we wanted any..... Eventually we said we will think about it and managed to get away. He kept the photos but we were both annoyed by his agressive approach and so did not purchase any. Perhaps if the service offered was not as aggressive and pushy we would have selected one or two photos, as some were very nice!

* Shops *
We walked down to the shops one evening before dinner to buy the obligatory gifts/ souvenirs/'Genuine Fakes'..... tat !! There are a number of shops within a short walkof the hotel - all with pretty much the same things inside, the only real difference being that you can get better deals and some more that others. Haggling skills at the ready !!

* Haggling *
In the shops be prepard to haggle - not something I tried !! However there are good bargains to be had if you can haggle well.... we were told to half any price and then take off a bit more! So for some price at 100 dinar offer 40 dinar and then go from there!

* Duty Free... !!!! *
There are some good deals to be had in Duty Free - dont be too eager to purchase on the outbound flight as we found most items to be more expensive both at duty free and on the plane. Wait until your return flight to the UK and get your items once you have cleared passport control and security - do also be careful though and work out rough Sterling equivalents as there are also items that are not better value here than back in the UK. We bought tobacco, cigarettes and alcohol upto what we were advised was allowed and made good savings. Some of the frangrances are not cheaper so do choose carefully - also be aware of allowances and check with staff at Duty Free what is allowed back into the UK!


Overall this was a fab hotel and we had a lovely, relaxing holiday with excellent weather - high 30s / low 40s centigrade every day.!! The staff were very helpful. The guests were a very mixed bunch and we met some lovely people along the way. Will definitely be keeping this hotel in mind for a return visit soon...!! xxx

Room Tip: A sea-view is lovely! - try to ask for a safe with a key, not a code. Rooms higher up get the best v...
