“Not really 5 star”
Reviewed 21 May 2010

Oceana Palace is labelled 5 star. Not sure who by. Rooms large but lack any character. Restauarant is buffet every night and very same all the time. Two sittings and you can either eat with the children at 18.30 or with the grown ups at 20.30. At 20.29 the bar empties as all rush up to the restaurant to make sure they get the best bits - not sure what they are as it is all much the same every night.
If you don't like the smell of cigarette smoke this is not the place for you. The lobby bar which is in large atrium setting is filled with smoke that then rises in the atrium so that all the rooms upstairs get polluted. It is almost impossible to avoid. If you want breakfast outside you will be surrounded by smokers.
Best bit of the hotel is the staff. Unfailingly cheerful, welcoming and ready to help. They even manage to pretend that all those 'regulars' who claim to be on first name terms are really their best friends.
We managed to enjoy ourselves but will not be back and could not wait to wash off the overwhelming smell of cigarettes.

A superb hotel. Very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were large with seperate dressing rooms and wider than average balconies, plus the beds were comfy. Beautiful well kept gardens leading onto the beach. You could walk up or down the beach either to Yasmine Hammamet or Hammamet which was slightly further but could be reached by cutting inland from the beach. We loved every minute and will return. Thanks to the room ladies who arranged swans rose petals etc. on our beds. They were wonderful. We were there during the volcano and Thomson allowed us to stay in the hotel until we could fly back to the U.K. Thankyou Thomson. One of the most memorable holidays ever.

This was our first time in Tunisia and we stayed at the Oceana based on the TripAdvisor reviews mainly we'd read. They were spot on. We stayed for almost 3 weeks due to the Icelandic volcano and every day the hotel impressed us.

Our 11 year old daughter and her 9 and 13 year old brothers said it was the best hotel they'd stayed at and they're pretty well travelled. The service was fantastic - the bedrooms were very large and kept spotless by a great maid service. The restaurant staff (from the manager to the waiters and some of the chefs) all spoke to the children using their first names and greeted them with a "high five" or a friendly hug. The staff seemed pretty fluent in English, French, German, with some Spanish and Italian as well as their first language Arabic. This friendliness was genuine unlike service in some other countries.

Food variety is good and the quality is also good - with the fresh fruit also starring - but not as much as the delicious pancakes which were made each morning for the kids; omelettes also excellent.

It was quiet when we were there so it was not too lively. The sunbeds came with mattress and towels and sun shades both around the pool and on the beach.

There is a fair selection of books that guests have left behind - but not much for kids to read - usual holiday fodder. Tennis courts are good and the table tennis and boules also scored highly.

The indoor pool was a must in April (outdoor pol was big but a bit chilly, but we did all swim in it) and was big enough to have a swim or play games - enjoyed by all.

We walked most days along the beach to Yasmine Hammamet and the marina with a fair spread of restaurants and ice cream places but the shopping is pretty limited if that's what you want from a holiday.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family.

The earlier reviews say it all: wonderful staff, huge fantastic room. We went for total R&R and thats what we got. Weather might have been slightly better but even the hotel management cannot help that! One or two people say "out of the way" : but we felt that its location gave us a feeling of security and solitude. Some of the other hotels seem close to main roads, of (frankly) poorer areas. The large hotels are 'oasis' of wealth. This one has great beach, pool, indoor pool, hammama huge and unused gym, sauna and (for extra of course ) spa treatments.

But I think it is the staff and service that makes it so great - they made us feel special and welcome.

I agree that there is no where to 'potter' about immediately locally- but a taxi into the town is GBP 3 or 4 max , a taxi to Bir Bou Repka less and from there good trains to Tunis and south (Tunis return is £5 1st class).

PS free wifi - using that now!

Stayed for a week, Sun 14 March - 21st. I wanted to stay at a RIU hotel as we stayed at one in Fuerteventura at Christmas. The Oceana is lovely and the staff very friendly and attentive. The food was good but not as fine as my previous RIU experience. Our room was comfortable but sometimes we could hear other residents running baths and opening the sliding doors of their wardrobes. We were on the opposite side to the swimming pool but we still had a view of the sea above the garden trees. The garden was well maintained with lawns, trees, palms and birds! There were lots blackbirds and sparrows which I didn't expect to see and it was amusing to watch them building nests in palm trees. The hotel is a bit cut off though and there is no promenade if you like a walk after dinner. Taxis are reasonable but agree a price before you get in or ask for the meter to be set. There is also a bus service which we used but some may feel the walk to the bus stop on the main road is too far.

As we were “out of season” many of the beach bars and surrounding hotels were closed for the winter. The beach had good sand but away from the hotel there was flotsam and jetsam accompanied by plastic bottles. Towards the end of our stay we noticed some closed hotels being cleaned and painted in preparation for the summer and a clean-up operation began on the beach so I would imagine that during the peak season the resort looks totally different – but too hot for me!.

My husband and I have just returned from a weeks stay at the Riu Oceana.

All the hotel staff were the friendliest and helpful that we have ever experienced. The hotel looked and smelt great all the time and it really does feel as if you are staying in a palace. Our room was very spacious and comfortable; I just loved the walk in wardrobe.

The hotel is however cut off from any shops and its a 20 minute walk to yasmine hammamet from the beach but the taxis are very cheap.

Having stayed at other 5* hotels we thought that the meals on days were average, the variety can be limited and the quality was not always so good. Activities and entertainment were also limited at this time and there was only one english tv channel.

Overall, we had a lovely weeks relaxation in plush surroundings with the most obliging hotel staff.

I agree with a lot of what other reviewers have said, but would like to add a few caveats. This is our 12th different Riu in Europe and in some ways the least enjoyable. It is out on a limb, access to the nearest cafes, shops etc along a beach which was none too clean and all sand. There is no public transport and the hotel is on a dead end road. Do not even think of walking anywhere on the road, which turns into a major routeway at the roundabout. So taxis are a must. It is the least pedestrian friendly of all the Rius we have been in.
The staff do remember regulars and many do return again and again. However this does give an air of a "two class" clientele, at times, as first timers we felt a "bit out of it"
The staff are very polite, and effective, the food was great, the hotel clean and tidy. But I felt it lacked warmth, lacked an atmosphere. The appalling weather did not help, when it is cold wet and windy any hotel can be bad, but this one seemed particularly bleak. Perhaps it was because it was so empty - 50-60 rooms occupied I suspect, but I feel it needs the sun and warmth.
And for the first time we had a serious problem, which meant that we had to curtail our stay. The senior staff were I feel somewhat diffident, and did not seem to want to help, even though the problem was largely of their making.
So, if you want a beach/pool/sightseeing break, with very good food and surroundings this couild be the place for you. But if like us you want to walk locally, and "potter around" think twice
