“Excellent rooms, friendly staff, local character, close to beach”
Reviewed 22 November 2009

Had a lovely relaxing week at the royale residence - the apartment was lovely and spacious, very clean and well looked after. Didn't really use the cooking facilities, but good to have a fridge and pan to warm water for coffee! I'm sure what we'll take away most from the holiday was the friendliness of the people. All the staff from hotel receptionist to cleaners to waiters and chefs, both within the hotel and at surrounding restaurants were so welcoming throughout our stay. This hotel shares the facilities of the neighbouring Le Hammamet Hotel - we breakfasted in the restaurant and ate there in the evening every other night. There was generally a good selection of food available (as a buffet) including some lovely salads and a great selection of desserts. We also ate out several times - the best find was the "Marina" fish restaurant just a short walk from the Royale Residence - although a bit pricier than other places around we were brought a platter of fresh fish, selected our own and had it cooked exactly the way we wanted. Le Hammamet hotel also has its own path to the beach and beach area (with snack bar), outdoor unheated and (most importantly for November) indoor heated swimming pool, a hammam (steam room plus massages), all of which are usable by royale residence guests. This is a great place to go to relax, for sun, sea and sand, but we found getting out to see the cultural side of Tunisia a bit of a trek - Hammamet itself (both old town and newer built Yasmine) was pretty toursity - most of the shops selling the same tourist trinkets, and as it was quiet the shopkeepers really did try to drag us into their shops - so you have to really be in the mood to go bartering - however a simple no did generally get the message across to them - best description of the locals is persistently friendly and by the end of the week we really seemed to get to know the different characters!

We took last minute holiday, arrived at hotel good welcome apartment spacious, clean beds comfortable. Unfortunaly No Sky TV so unable to get BBC World. If you enjoy a drink in the early evening, suggest you take with you, could not find gov. supermarket near but wine etc available from hotel bar. We were on half board so all meals were served in the le Hammamet Hotel they were ok but perhaps a second week might have been a bit boring. Swimming pools area was kept clean and tidy, but pool at the Residence was a bit green around edges. Would return to this hotel with my family.

We've traveled with 15 months old baby in sept.2008.,15 days HB- we had breakfast at Residence Royale(compliments to mr.Ali the greatest cook of all times) and dinner at Hammamet Hotel. Food was perfect and we've been to Tunisia 5 times before going to this hotel (Mouradi hotels included). The hotel is awesome, evertyhing was just perfect and we plan to go back this year for another 10 days at least! Absolutely loved it. Rooms are great and spacious, the beach is nice and clean, personel pleasant and kind...... if you've decided to spend your holiday at Residence Royale htl you've made the right joice! Have a nice stay.

Pros: The place is clean and quiet. The receptionist is kind. The rooms are inexpensive.

Cons: Refurbishing is badly needed in the room we had. The toilet never stopped running which was especially annoying when trying to sleep.

The surrounding will please people who are looking for an urban experience in Tunisia. You do not see the sea from the hotel. Your view will most probably be on other buildings.

Even though we did pay for this hotel, we left and went to the Karthago (a 5 star) which was more in line with our expectations.

I made my choice using Trip Advisor without taking into account the fact that this is a 4 star. Do not do the same !

Just back from a very enjoyable week in tunisia where we stayed in the Royal Residence apartments.I booked the holiday last minute the previous wednesday (we travelled sat) and took a chance on the place after reading the reviews.
On arrival (2am) my heart sank. After dropping others at their hotels this really didn't look all that appealing but i have to admit first impressions were wrong.
The staff at reception were lovely and friendly and promptly showed us to our room or should i say rooms. The kitchen cum living room is one area and is nice. The sofa's in the living area are actually 2 kiddies beds. There is a fridge and 2 rings to cook on in the kitchen. No gourmet cooking there but it's adequate. There was also a tv but english tv wasn't available. The bedroom was separate and really spacious and clean and had a balcony off it.Oh did i mention so did the living room...2 balconies!!The bathroom was also spacious but the shower could have been a bit stronger..
We travelled on a room only package and meals were served in the adjoining hammamet hotel for those doing half board. There was a shop in the reception and across the road and we used to get our fresh bread and bits for brekkie there. We did eat in the resturaunt at lunch and it was lovely.
The amazing thing about the apts were they were deserted. We were sure there were only a handful of couples there for the first 3/4 days and even by the weekend it was still only a handful more.We spent a lot of time lazing by the pool and at no time were there more than 5 other people around. The pool was very clean and well maintained.it really felt like OUR pool.
The beach was a 5 min walk through the hammemet hotel and down a very beautiful tree lined walkway. No complaints about the beach.yes there were hagglers but once you said no they were on their way.We found this with all hagglers throughout tunisia.
nightlife here was relatively quiet but at 7 months pregnant that suited. The hot spots were only 5 mins away in a taxi costing a mere 1euro.
Food is good although we found the majority of resturaunts italian.Service was good and you would get a 2 course meal plus wine for around 20euro for 2.
The only downside is the 2 hour commute to monastir airport.Arriving at 2am wasn't the best.
Our experience was great with wonderful staff(who you had to feel sorry for because it was so quiet) nice location and peaceful surroundings.we would have no hesitation going back although maybe at a slightly busier time. They get busy in july and august

We stayed at the Apart Hotel Royal Residence from the 13th May to 20th May 2007, half board, after a weeks touring in Tunisia. The meals were taken in the sister Hotel Le Hammamet, which is a short walk through the beautiful gardens, linking the hotels.

The evening meals were the best we have experienced abroad, always hot and with more than adequate choice and beautifully cooked. The dining room is a low vaulted structure with a lot of character and the waiters were always friendly and helpful. Normally we would choose to eat out to experience the local character, but on this occaision, the whole character and ambience meant that this was not necessary.

Each hotel has a large swimming pool with free sunbeds and waiter service if required. The beach is only a short walk away. The staff in the Royal Residence were always very friendly and helpful and there were no language problems. Reception staff in the Le Hammamet Hotel seemed less friendly.

The hotel is situated in a quiet culdisac, so there were no noise problems. Linked to the Le Hammamet Hotel is the Queen Vic, for drinks and snacks. Again the staff were excellent, friendly and curteous.

The hotel has a small shop for essential items at reasonable prices, but there are other shops across the road, where we again found prices to be reasonable and the staff helpful and with no hassle when buying gifts.

There is evening entertainment and other activities which we did not partake, so cannot comment. The apartment was spacious, having a large sitting area with small kitchen complete with electric rings and fridge. Water had to be boiled in a pan and a small kettle would have been better.

There were two balconies, overlooking the pool, with sliding doors, one off the bedroom and one off the living room. The Bathroom has bath and shower and the water was always hot. Towels were changed every day, beds made and changed and the rooms cleaned satisfactorarily.

The air conditioning was not working however at this time of year, but was needed on the occaisional very hot days. Taxis are very cheap and always available outside the hotel. It would take about an hour to walk along the beach to the Medina. Definitely an excellent Hotel to chill out in as the resort itself is of limited interest.
